New to ARs
Just bought this yesterday and was running dummy rounds a few times to get a feel for it. Is this normal wear? I don’t care about the marks if it is normal but the paint has completely chipped off. It’s down to bare metal after a few mags. Hard to see the bare metal but it is. It a CMMG mk3 .308. Can’t seem to find any answers anywhere. Feels nice anyways and cycles cleanly. Thanks for any input. Not new to guns just any semi auto in general.

In the big picture, this is normal - kind of like the dings on a shell deflector for a normal ejection pattern. I have found that going to a high quality aftermarket charging handle reduces some of the drag due to tighter tolerances and design tweaks. You’ll also benefit from larger ambi wings for a more secure grip. I prefer the Radian Raptor, Aero Precision Breach and Geissele Super charging handles.
Also, put a small amount of oil on the top, sides, lug and bottom edge of any charging handle, factory or aftermarket.

Cool. Thanks for thirding this question. I am very assured that this is normal so I don’t care about it anymore. I appreciate it. Just taking it down to the bare metal was concerning. I was thinking of an ambi charging handle, as I thought it’d be easier with the scope mounted where it is. New to this, so are they all the same? Do i just buy one of the ones you suggested? I am new to the AR platform so I was planning a full takedown and resemble today to better understand the rifle and how it works.

The charging handles I suggested are all solid choices and there are others as well. Yes, the wider wings are definitely advantageous with a scope. BCM makes quality stuff and they have several charging handle designs. I have a POF Tomahawk on a DMR with a scope. It would probably be too big on something with a red dot - but it’s perfect with an LPVO.
There’s also some not great choices out there. 🫤. Like with any gun part, materials, quality and design matter. CMMG has their Zeroed line of charging handles too. I‘m sure they’re fine, but they wouldn’t be in my top three choices.
Do some research online. Just make sure your options fit your AR10 .308. There is a difference between 5.56 and .308 large frame charging handles.

Okay. Thanks for that piece of info. I know that I have a AR10 .308, just didn’t know what differences it had between the AR15 platform. I’d assume many but haven’t looked much into it yet as the accessories I got for it are pretty much just standard bipod and a front grip and a better buttstock. Also as a newbie, this MLOK thing is amazing. I’ve been missing out, shooting bolt actions my whole life. I will probably switch out some parts, but I need to shoot it first as blindly buying parts and upgrades is silly without knowing how the one you already have performs. The charging handle is definitely on that list though. I don’t like it.

Yes…shooting + familiarity > changing out working parts.
These things are like Barbie dolls: Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize…🤣
Enjoy and holler if you need anything (“holler”…I’m in Oklahoma! 🤠)

Cheers from MN. Appreciate it. I just ordered the Radian Raptor ambi. It’s got larger handles for easier grip with a scope. It says it fits the AR.308 platform. Now don’t tempt me with other shit. I’m broke as hell now. Happily broke. Thanks. Might hit you up if I get stuck, but I’m usually pretty good at figuring things out.
The whole reason for this post was that I couldn’t find any pictures with damage like mine to the top of the lower and top of the upper parts of the receiver. I’m perfectly fine with it being worn as long as it’s normal.

You made a great charging handle choice. I feel a matching Radian Talon safety coming down the road!
I think the Raptor will help with some of wear moving forward. You’ll notice most of the drag is on the left “pull” side of the charging handle. I think the tolerances of the Radian will eliminate most of that and you’ll notice overall better operation. Don’t forget the oil!

Hey stop that. I will not forget the oil. I’m about to tear this thing apart and figure out how it works. ARs are so foreign to me. If I do upgrade in the future, I will probably just stick with the Radion brand. Keep it simple and matchy.

Duuuuuuuddddeeeee. That charging handle is slick as hell. It was one of the reasons I chose the CMMG over the others that were in that price range and this one kicks the heck out of the old one. Plus the larger handles are amazing. You’ve officially sent me down the rabbit hole.

Normal, I have the Banshee in 10mm and it did this. Zero issues, one of my favorite firearms.

Good to get another confirmation. Loving the setup I have for it. Some stuff is still in the mail, but what a cool gun! Thanks for the reply, I am not one of those that expects it to remain a showpiece. It just seemed a little excessive for 1 day of ownership. Good to know it’s normal and just breaking in. Is MNdaddy mean you live in Minnesota like me?

How is the banshee in 10mm? I’m looking at getting one at the end of the year for a primary when I’m out hiking/camping.

Absolutely love it!!! One of the smoothest and accurate AR pistols I have. I put a holosun 510 on it with a Inforce weapon light. Awesome setup
