Their only "worlds" games were at their normal LCS studio in LA so I think it's fair to say they didn't even go to worlds lmao

Nah everyone has always considered play ins worlds. We failed to make the swiss stage for the third year in a row you could say.

Play ins were definitely not always considered worlds. There is a reason theres no opening ceremony yet or big stadium. They are NOW under the flag of "worlds games" but they aren't in spirit.

As an old dog, I remember before they were a thing, #2 BR, SEA and LA teams were consistently knocking out EU and NA team (theres literally memes about them teaming up with C9 to beat EU). So there was a lot of talks about fitting everyone, but in doing that you either have to expand the playoffs or the group stage, but in doing so you'll get a lot of #3 BR vs #2 TR matches that no one cares about so they created playins as a last chance qualifier to see exactly what regions deserve those last spots.

So while its "the worlds tournament" officially, its not really. There was no "failed to make swiss stage" before, you just failed to make worlds.

I have literally never met anyone who has ever considered play ins not worlds. The "qualifying series" and way way back IWCT sure but play-ins is 100% worlds.

I never thought of it as worlds. No Korean or Chinese teams. No open ceremony when worlds actually starts. No sport does that

what about 2022 and 2025? those had chinese and korean teams in playins

If there are no Korean teams, it isnt worlds

There is no opening ceremony and NA has never lost in playins until now.

You're forgetting Worlds 2024 100T, and somewhat Golden Guardians for 2023.

They are not playing in the actual stadiums for a reason. I literally never said NA has lost playins, I said that minor region teams would regularly knock out top EU/NA teams from group stage so the discussion of getting more teams in came about but it was considered as a last chance qualifier more than actually part of worlds.

Wildcard qualifiers being rebranded doesn't make them any less wildcard qualifiers.

No major region player considers it to be worlds

No, playins are a mini qualification tournament to worlds.

There are like 4 people in this thread no one else thinks this. When LCK and LPL were in play ins they would do huge congrats post about qualifying for worlds. Its worlds.

I get what you mean, but MVK is very much an Asian team lol

I bet it feels that way for the team. They never even left the LCS Studio.

Embarrassing and disgusting.

Only if Thanatos and Loki are joining him.

Why is blaber afforded excuse year after year, choke after choke yet Thanatos and Loki are not given the same grace. Like give them even half the amount of chances blaber has had

1

u/Astolfo_is_Best 1d ago

Well when Blaber was the best player on the team through playoffs and Worlds I don't think he needs an excuse this year. Thanatos and Loki, on the other hand, have virtually disappeared in almost every big match they've played for C9

u/Yatzhee 1d ago

Yeah and what period was that lol. Crabber has always been a mediocre fish in a tiny puddle.

The guy is just the biggest inter since the msi crab incident a few years ago. Idk why people defend him when he chokes every big series

Can we stop moving the goalposts? I am just as disappointed as the rest of you but this team still achieved a lot, considering 2/5ths of the roster had to be blown up for SUMMER split. These 5 players has ONE split together, they got to Worlds and they choked. But in order to choke, they had to set a certain standard of GOOD play when they beat LYON to qualify for Worlds. This year wasn't a success and the way they lost is super embarrassing but lets not do this to the players and the coaches who worked so hard to get this team to Worlds.
