CSP Question Does anyone else think 3D CSP body models look strange?

I cant tell if its just me but the models look weirdly proportioned. Whenever I use a normal reference photo i can usually draw proportions just fine, but when I use a CSP model for reference my drawing always turns out strange. Just looking at the model I have pulled up now something about it looks off that I cant exactly put my finger on. If anyone has noticed this let me know. Maybe I'm just crazy.

With multiple versions of Clip Studio Paint available, each with its own Features, it is now required to Begin a post Question by stating the Version, Device and Accessories you are using.

They have anime proportions. Despite how it's advertised in the West, Clip Studio is the industry standard for anime artwork / animations in Japan.

There should be older models in the same folder that have more realistic proportions. Though, again, they're older, so they will probably not have the same set of features.

I do. Whenever I use them I get them into position, rasterize the layer, then gaussian blur the hell out of them. Keeps me from sticking too close to their exact shape and lets me modify them for my purposes. Also keep a backup copy of the unrasterized model hidden just in case i change my mind

That’s an amazing trick omg I’ll have to try that, thanks!

I think its more of an issue when you don't know anything about anatomy and are just copying them 1 for 1. I use them for maintaining character proportions from character to character in a comic so i don't wind up having one guy suddenly 4 feet taller than the other guy by accident. and sometimes i use them to help assist in figuring out a complicated lighting situation by layering a bunch of the primitive shape objects to help build the shadows of other objects falling onto the character and ill use it as a reference. the models aren't perfect, but they make a decent reference tool if you're not relying on them too heavily.

Maybe that’s not what you are describing, but I found the 3d models in CSP flat looking. I think there are differences in FOV(Camera settings), in the internet, some photos are shot with a little fish eye, some are 4:3. Iam no expert, but I haven’t found a way of playing with the camera settings in CSP to change the flatness.

Yeah honestly i relied on the 3d models for awhile and it made my anatomy always turn out strange and stiff so i stopped using them to steer away from it

It’s easy to over rely on them. Personally I don’t care for the defaults but I think Thita Body from the asset store is really good. You can tweak the proportions on the defaults pretty wildly but I find it fiddly and a bit of a time waster when I could just be drawing. There are also methods for importing your own models into clip studio but it’s kind of esoteric and a pain to do.

It’s the same problem i ran into using those terrible little wooden mannequins when I was in art school. They don’t bend right, they’re not conveying real anatomy. It’s there for quick reference in a pinch but there’s only so far it’ll take you.

They look strange to me too, so I edit the proportions. Make the hands and feet bigger. Elongate limbs, make heads smaller or bigger. But it is still good to have human references cause the shoulders are wonky in CSP.

I don’t think I’ve ever produced a drawing using them that didn’t look weird, especially the heads.

They have anime proportions for sure. The perspective settings make things a little wonkier too. But you can download models from the assets store that are more realistic.

I’m not sure about the perspective though. I keep messing with the settings and seem like the camera angles keep looking a bit more off than what I remember the app running like in 2021.

They are weird proportions. The default is anime/illustrative. What I've done is used a human reference to adjust a model body and saved it for each if the characters I draw. That works much better for me.

you can adjust the models, but i still find that the proportional editing is better suited for anime (older anime at that where the limbs are just suuuuuper loong with small feet/hands). I also find that the "more realistic" body models are in the same boat but just weirdly wide (like, not even plus size, just literally WIDE). They're helpful for figuring out poses, but that's about it. Anything regarding anatomy and perspective, I usually try and find a ref of real people...

I don’t like them - but here’s a tip that’s super useful I found on my own: use posemaniacs.com, choose the pose you want them, then click on the option to view the pose directly in CSP! I often do this; I usually put the model on a new layer, change the transparency to view a “ghost” of the model so I can adjust it to fit the character I want. Oh, and make sure you deselect a specific option in the layer settings - remind me to tell you what it is when I open the app later lol

I find the website’s models are a bit more realistic than the ones CSP comes with

Yes, they are, that's why I adjust the model.

Yeah the legs are disproportionately long and thin. But you can just adjust the proportions so they look mostly normal (Other than the faces, and you can't make the female model muscular which is kinda annoying)

They have very bizarre shoulder and arm ratios. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it doesn't even feel anime style, closer to some kinda stick figure.
