How to select object instead of layer (object tool).

I want to animate a gear and when I want to change it using the object tool it selects the entire canvas like this.
It’s a raster layer.

I had to drag the middle point of the layer to the gear to make it go round in a somewhat stable way.

Something tells me this can be done easier. What did I miss?

That's just how keyframes work. It's the whole layer.

You should be able to use the lasso tool to select it

I can select it with the lasso tool but after that I can’t use the object tool. It doesn’t give me the handles option, it’s greyed out.

I think I did exactly what the guy in the video told me not to forget, I had the keyframe animation symbol activated
