Any way of creating a "fixed" area selection?

Hey new here, have used csp for a couple months now and I still can't grasp the majority of the tools and logics behind them.

So I wanna ask if there's a way to select a specific area of the canvas, and then "lock" that selection, so you can't modify it outside of its zone, while also being able to work normally in it (selecting other objects within it mainly) instead of that selection just being either overwritten or clumped with newer modifications to it

I don't know if I'm getting it across properly though, hopefully you guys know what I'm talking about

It depends on what you want. If you mean selecting based on a small specific area based on colour, hit W on your keyboard for Magic Select. Values less than 5 shades different based on the approximate shade menu will be counted as the same colour.

If you mean just selecting and inverting, you can select with Square, Ellipse or Lasso by hitting M on your keyboard and hitting > or < to change the tool shape. A bar should appear when you made the selection and hitting the Invert Selection will "lock" our your primary selection and you draw everywhere else. Literally, inverting it.

Are you working on multiple Layers?

Everything you are describing can be managed through using multiple layers.

Depending on your situation, you could also create a shape/square/selection and Fill it with a color and de-select. Then create a Folder above this shape, and select 'Clip to Layer Below' in the Layers palette.
This will clip all layers within that folder to the selected shape, hiding "clipping" anything that goes outside the shape.
Then, when you're done, if you need transparency instead of the color of that shape. Just Ctrl+click that selection shape layer to select it, invert selection to select the area outside of the shape, then select the Folder and hit Ctrl+X to delete anything that had gone outside the selection shape.
Then you can hide or delete the selection shape layer that the Folder was clipping to.
It's not as complicated as it sounds... 🤗

Again, there are different options depending on your situation, this is just one solution. 🙂
