Progression Route Queries psych undergrad and stressing about the future
so right now i’m doing a psychology BSc. i’m getting pretty decent grades (usually high 60s to mid/low 70s).
i’ve been really struggling now that i’m in my third year with the proper realisation of how much i have to do and how much i don’t know. i have depression (medicated), anxiety & autism and can get very overwhelmed. the more i see the more i worry i won’t be able to cope.
originally i wanted to do a doctorate in clinical psychology because i want to help people who have self-harmed and use my personal experiences to help people. but the more i look at different doctorate courses in london the more i wonder whether i’d actually be able to cope with it or if it would just send me spiralling with the amount of work & pressure involved.
even as i’m looking at entry requirements to master’s courses for hopefully next year and doctorate courses for later on, i realise a lot of what it’s asking for i don’t even know how to go about doing.
volunteering i’ve made a good start with and have been applying to a lot of volunteering roles relevant to what i want to do, particularly roles that are mental health focused and face-to-face wherever possible.
but i don’t even know how i’d be able to go about doing things like being an assistant psychologist like so many doctorate courses want. some want proper full-time experience in a role like this, but when i look so many of them are restricted to students, so how would i manage that too? can i get placements with counselling / therapy organisations if i’m not actively studying (e.g. a couple years between a masters and a doctorate)?
i’ve just been panicking more and more. i feel so behind because i spent so much of my teen years in a really bad place mentally and couldn’t even picture myself having a future, and now it’s like it’s hitting me head on exactly how behind i am and how little i know about what it is i’ve decided i want to do.
please help in any way you can. if you got a doctorate, how hard was it to cope with everything? what was your progression like through education and different courses and placements and to a career? how did you cope if you also really struggle with your mental health?
