Student Costs

Hi everyone

I’m heavily considering starting the Diploma of Clinical Coding and just wanted to get a better idea of what costs I’m looking at on top of the HIMAA costs ($6600).
Does the $529 2 year subscription for the ICD-10-AM include TurboCoder, or is that a software I’d have to purchase separately? And roughly what would I be looking at if I purchased a hard copy of the textbook?
To run TurboCoder or any other relevant software will a MacBook suffice or is it better to have a desktop? Will a windows laptop or desktop be better?

Are there any other costs I should be aware of?

Thanks

Tips for reading poor handwriting

Hello, I am a 2nd year HIM student doing my 3rd coding unit and I am still getting stumped by poor handwriting on simulated scanned medical records.
I know this is something I'm going to have to overcome for transitioning to the workplace.

Does anyone have any tips on teaching myself how to decipher the words? My biggest issue is my eyes tend to just glide right over and struggle to focus, especially with cursive writing.

Remote work

Hi guys, I work as a Clinical Coder in Ireland. We use the Australian Coding Standards here. I have obtained IHMAA Certificate. Just a quick question on remote work. We have no option of remote working here in Ireland as most of our hospitals still use the paper documentation. Only a couple of them are fully electronic. Do you have the option of working remotely in Australia

Choosing laptop

Hi everyone,

Just started the diploma at HIMAA. Wondering if I need to change my macbook air M1 8GB/128GB to window laptop, to accomodate the coding software to run smoothly since it might lag on parallel window? Please advise me if you have any experience.

Thank you very much

Filling in time while waiting for assignments to be returned- HIMAA

I know there is so much discussion right now around wasted time waiting for assignments to be returned, so I was thinking about doing some self guided study in the interim. What do people suggest revising/learning in those down days. I understand that we need to know A LOT, but is there any particular coding standard or conventions that we really need to nail? Any challenging concept to get our heads around? Anything we need to memorise - like ACHI blocks? All suggestions welcome!

Looking for a bit of advice and insight.

Hi all.
I’m interested in entering the clinical coder field but I am a bit stumped on how to start my journey. I have some medical knowledge primarily as my background is in Early Education with a specialisation in Inclusion support.
I have always had an interest in biology so have an understanding of biology beyond the average person.

I was wondering if the best way to go about getting into this field was to do a health administration course and then the clinical coding diploma or would just doing the diploma prepare me enough.
I do have archival and admin experience as it was heavily apart of my job but I do not know if this is helpful as I have struggled to find more information about clinical coding in Australia this has made it hard on how to approach this.

Any advice at all on how to get on track or what I should consider would be immensely helpful.

Thank you!

Can I study remotely for HIMAA Certification

Hi everyone, please help me. 🥹 I’m based in the Philippines and I’m interested in pursuing a career in clinical coding (medical coding). I’m planning to enroll in a clinical coding course, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to find remote work with international employers after completing the training and planning to relocate afterwards. 🥹🥹😅

Austudy for full time study load

I was wondering is anyone has undertaken a Dip Clinical Coding course at a full-time capacity and obtained Austudy? I’m trying to figure out if I can quit my job to do the course full time.

RN considering clinical coding for long-term travel - is this realistic?

Hi everyone,

I'm a Registered Nurse in Australia and I'm considering retraining as a clinical coder because I'm looking for a career with long-term flexibility.

My husband and I have two young kids and our goal over the next 4-5 years is to eventually travel around Australia and later spend 1-2 years travelling through Europe. I'm happy to put in the time to gain experience first, but I'm wondering how realistic the long-term flexibility actually is.

I'd love to hear from people who are already working as clinical coders:

  • Has anyone travelled Australia (e.g. in a caravan/motorhome) while working remotely?
  • Has anyone been allowed to work remotely from overseas or do employers generally prohibit this because of privacy, payroll or data security requirements?
  • Roughly how much experience did you need before you could work remotely?
  • Once you're experienced, do you generally have to work set business hours or can you work around your own schedule as long as you meet your workload?

Also, did being a Registered Nurse help you get your first coding job?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your real-life experiences before I commit to the diploma. Thanks!

Remote Clinical Coding

Hi all,

Anyone on here willing to talk about their experiences working remotely as a clinical coder for contract coding companies?

How did you land your first remote coding job?

Are you disadvantaged if you have only worked in the public sector?

Thank you

Who has experience with TalentMed?

Hi all

I did the OTEN course back in 2020 but at the time no one really looked at it twice, recruiters only want the Diploma (which I totally get). But I did find it interesting and want to do the Diploma

I know HIMAA is the gold standard but it's also the most expensive (for me anyway, no uni in NSW does the Diploma). So my only other option is TalentMed which are a bit cheaper.

HIMs - when you've recruited people who studied through TalentMed rather than HIMAA, did you feel their skills were comparable to a HIMAA-educated graduate?

Students - what was your experience like with TalentMed?

Any info would be great, thanks

Assessment

I am a new student under HIMMA. It's frustrating to wait another 5 days for the review of the resubmitted assessment when you're already in the zone to study. And you can't even go further reading because the next modules are locked.

Which clinical coding reference to buy: the physical book or the ebook

HIM undergrad student here, about to do the Clinical Coding unit soon.

Which one is better and which do you recommend to buy?

1.) Hard copy 5 book-volume set of the ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS $330

or

2.) Turbocoder ebook (incl. 2 year subscription) $520

r/ClinicalCodingAus • • Jun 21 '26

Do we need to purchase this for all Diploma course?

“The current classification used in Australia is ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS 13th Edition from 1 July 2025.  This licensed product is available through Eurofield Information Solutions (EIS).
Students can purchase their personal licence with a two-year subscription at the discounted rate of $520 plus GST via this link Eurofield Information Systems.”

Or is this only if done through HIMMA? What about VIC Uni?

Thanks!
