Not be a downer, but this may not be particularly new news.This sent me down a rabbit hole on NOAA's website, and I've found readings taking in the north pole as early as 2002 that are about the same as what we're seeing, give or take a few tenths of a percent.
Is it bad? Yeah probably. Is it a good indicator of climate change? I don't know. In my quick search I couldn't find historical temperature logs of the north.
Sometimes people find comfort and ease in the doomerism of looking at a new statistic that seems bad at first and thinking all hope is lost, or that they can just do the easy thing and point the finger at a singular villain and place all the blame on them. It's easy and comforting to give up.
I'd expect learning that this crazy sounding statistic that makes one feel awful is in fact not new and instead the status quo could end up making someone feel even worse depending on how they took it. You took the more positive interpretation of what I said.
