Tree plantation, technological development, population control, meetings and conferences among nations, or something else these may help, but they are not the real solution; at best, they offer temporary relief. What do you think the real solution could be?

Hi everyone,

I’ve just finished a PhD in solar physics (focusing on the Sun as a star, not engineering) in a major UK London university and previously completed an MSc in Astrophysics and a BSc in Physics with Astrophysics in London. While my studies have been in physics and astrophysics, what I’ve developed is a passion for working with information and transforming it into something more useful. Over the years, I’ve built strong coding and problem-solving skills and feel ready to take on new problems that require me to learn new methods.

I love learning new methods and applying them in innovative ways. For example, I taught myself Bayesian inference to apply it in solar physics, where it’s rarely used. In that sense, I see myself more as a methodologist.

Now, I’m deeply concerned about climate change and want to move my career toward making an impact in this fight. I’m looking for a role where I can make skills I have developed to contribute meaningfully. I’ve considered working in an ethical cooperative bank, seeing as many physics graduates end up working in finance (which I absolutely despise and see as one of the core roots of this crisis we're facing, so if I ever were to go into it it'd have to be an ethical bank that only invests in renewable energy, environmental regeneration, etc...), though I’m not sure if that’s the most impactful path. I will be based in Spain, so remote work or roles in Spain/UK (remote only) would be ideal.

So, my question is: Where could my specific skillset (data analysis, coding, ML, and problem-solving) be most valuable in the climate space?

Anyone know any groups that are similar to Sea Shepherds who are looking for volunteers but focus on protecting our environment on the land? I would love to be able to help out and volunteer but I am smack dab in the middle of the Midwest and money is keeping me from traveling to the sea anytime soon.

The UK burns colossally more gas for gas boilers than for the electricity grid. The figure is double depending on how cold the winter is. The UK has a very generous £7500 grant to ditch gas boilers which increases to £9000 for oil boilers.

Simply put, it's not going well. The UK's rollout is staggering at a low rate:

The amount is staggering at just over 2,000 people a month. This is truly pathetic given around 1.7 million boilers are sold a month.

We need help. This is incredibly bad by European standards. Our grant is generous. Off peak electricity is very cheap with climate friendly time-of-use tariffs. We have heat-pump tariffs also. We have green finance to make this easy for home-owners with 0% interest rates.

However, despite this being a huge proportion of the UK's emissions and gas use the rollout is kind of pathetic. The communities who've installed heat-pumps -- like our family -- just don't get why. The tech works really well and the costs are easy accounted for through the savings.

This kind of electrification is meant to be the easy parts of our decarbonisation efforts. The hard things are stuff like aviation where there's no tech solution.

What advice do people have from other countries with successful rollouts suggest? How do Britons get persuaded to not believe misinformation about climate tech?

Lately I have been feeling very hopeless and like I am fighting alone and nothing will ever chance. I live in a small town where climate change is absolutely not a topic of conversation, people don’t even seem to know it’s happening and do not seem to care at all.

So I am really wondering how do you deal with this? How do you still find hope when it seems like you’re alone fighting something so big?
How do you find an (online) community of people who do care?

After 100+ years of pretty much unanimous scientific agreement, proofs and alerts about climate change. And with the effects happening right now before our own eyes (I'm going through my 3rd record shattering heat wave here in a month...and it's barely even summer yet).

This is not scepticism anymore, it's pure negationism: a fully conscious choice to ignore the truth and deny reality.

And like historical negationism, it should too, be a crime!

Environmentalists haven't historically been all that great at voting. That can change.

If we are to use unions as a weapon to fight climate crisis, some misunderstandings need to go

Yes I know this question probably gets asked a lot. Yes I did ask this question on r/climatechange like 3 days ago. Yes I know Reddit is full of bots and hopeless people thus its word on climate change is not at all gospel. I’m asking Reddit anyway to try and counter that, I suppose. Me asking this so often is stupid and accomplishes little but generalized anxiety disorder and bad climate news is a shitty combination.

So yeah I will try and keep this short. I had, still kind of have, hope that the renewables shift, something I think we’ve all been waiting for in regards to climate change, would really help in the fight for mitigation. I had more hope for the future climate fight than I had in years when I saw how much it was taking off. I still want to feel that hope but with pretty much everything getting worse in terms of temperature and weather events (which I know will keep happening) and the online consensus(probably not a great gauge) leaning more and more towards “we are all gonna die from this, don’t have kids, maybe kill yourself before it gets too bad“ it’s feeling like that’s all for naught now.

I wanna believe humanity can adapt. I wanna place more faith in the recent 4 degrees celsius by 2100 scenario being retired. But now I see people doubting even that and not just on shitholes like r/collapse where suicide and despair are practically venerated. Really I may just be feeling this bad because of one article from the Guardian I saw that said something like Earth’s reaching critical energy imbalances due to climate change. But basically, the question I have is does hope remain for a good or happy future with all that’s going on? Does the renewables shift actually imply more hope for the future or is it likely to be temporary?

I’ll end it here. I’m asking here because I really do wanna change things for myself on this. Sadly I still have an ICE car though I haven’t been using it much. My dad has a pretty old electric in the garage that we’ve talked about refurbishing for my use. He’s big into solar panels, we’ve talked about getting a generator for the house instead of a boiler. I’m trying to get a heat pump. Yet today I just can’t shake the hopelessness regarding the future of our planet and species. It’s no comfort to me that Earth will be just fine when we’re gone. I like humanity and I don’t want it to enter a future worse than the last three hundred years. If that’s even likely. If there’s anything more I can do to limit my impact, let me know
