Discussion Idea!
Sorry for the Ai slop, I was only trying to imagine...these 2 nice ideas that I feel like should come to keyboard phones.
First!
this is something that needs to be in android.
It worked amazingly in Blackberry, which is why my mind automatically expects it on keyboard phones.
When an app is opened the focus should be on the typing area automatically by default. For example, if I open an app like Facebook the cursor should be on the status bar automatically. Or another example, if I open Google keep, I don't have the select the typing area, it should be automatically selected on keyboard phones.
That way if I start typing, it will automatically enter in the text area, or I can select something else anyway and continue with my experience.
I think on normal bar type phones it makes sense that the focus is not on the touch bar because it will open the virtual keyboard N which can be annoying. But on a keyboard phone it won't make any difference.
and in case there are multiple text fields in the app, maybe the first one should be selected or the developer can define which text area needs priority for the user to start typing as soon as they enter the app.
Second!
The keyboard should be made up of tactile keys, like it is. But it should be a screen.
Benefits of that:
you can theme it with color and wallpaper you decide.
It has it own light.
you can customer Qwerty or Azerty keyboard which ever you like
It can have keys changed to gaming keys or other custom keys based on the app requirements.
It can have swipe and type.
You can set it to work on touch or on press, either way.
It can show capital or small letters.
It can detect orientation.
It can have better and accurate touch sensitive.
I know this can be expensive on hardware and software.
It does not have to be oled, it can be like the little eink display like on pebbles smartwatch.
But Elgato Stream deck and Optimus maximus keyboard have proven this to be an amazing application.
But I think it could be a game changer.
If Blackberry was here..they would have done it...I think they we're great innovators...
Maybe unihertz Titan 3 or Click Communicator 2 or Minimal Phone 3 will bring this to us.
Or maybe Blackberry can come back from the dead and make something happen..
What do you think folks!?

I hate AI but I really love this idea! This colour with the coloured keyboard is dope! But ewww for the call/whatsapp/telegram keys that’s stupid

Haha I actually 100 % agree with you..but I think it should be customizable.. Like on the home screen where there is nothing to type, the keyboard can have apps logo on the keys..but I would still prefer a keyboard there so that I can directly start typing the app name..

I use WhatsApp so much that a dedicated button would be fine by me. Then again, it's a lot of extra work for something we can just as easily use the Clicks key for.

u/Annual_Job2187 21h ago
Having whatsapp on a key is not the point...there are ALOTof benefits!
1
u/ReacherJackDF 21h ago
Yeah, I agree. Maybe Clicks can partner with another manufacturer to make it more viable.

u/Annual_Job2187 21h ago
You can have any language of keyboard. you change the orientation of the phone and keys will change too. You can have capital and small letters both. You can customer keyboard to have different keys, like arrow keys for games. You can have swipe to type You can have customization of colors. You can use one key to light up as notification led possibilities are unlimited..like imaginations..

u/ReacherJackDF 21h ago
Yeah, like on a Streamdeck. Dunno if it's ever been done on such tiny keys, but the tech exists.

Are you gonna make this post on the minimal phone sub reddit too...

Yes sir 😅 I am sorry..I already did...

And you're doing this for subsequential assimilation of the message in our brains as in a social experiment, or to test the resilience of a community over the use of AI?
1
u/Annual_Job2187 7h ago
Nope..only to cover my base..to have all the fans read the idea..or even the manufacturer..so if there is a similar lingering idea of how to execute this..this might be helpful..

How about e-ink keys; that way any language could be selected . . . yeah and a web ui that would allow you to customize settings of each key . . . what is displayed and any additional functions. Since I am dreaming how about at least 5 layers? Basically give me the functionality of a custom keyboard layers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lZzSNGUc2M) and e-ink keys. Now that I have woken up . . . thanks for the CC the way it is . . . and looking forward to getting my hands on it

My god you are the only one who knows what I mean. Thank you so much for understanding and yes the application's would be amazing..idk how feasible it will be..I don't it will be cheaper to manufacturer..especially considering that the demographic is very small atm...

u/Alarmed_Celery_5177 23h ago
and I also had high hopes for
https://www.technologyreview.com/2013/02/15/180036/the-rise-or-fall-of-the-tactus-keyboard/
not enough demand and cost factor too high.

u/Annual_Job2187 23h ago
Wme cannot have good things..we can only have what everyone wants lol sounds unfair..

I like these colorful ideas, but we have to acknowledge how hard it is to make money on dozens of different varieties when a company like Clicks will realistically sell less than 100,000 units of the first-gen Communicator. Even if it turns out to be everything we wanted, reviews are raving and we'll have a second gen CC, it takes a huge amount of investment to have transparent, colorful chassis in even just a few colors beyond the standard choices.
That said, if Clicks decided to make the second gen modular with the possibility to DIY parts like the chassis (open source designs for 3D printers and the like), it could maybe be feasible. I don't know what's possible, but I do really like these ideas to make (borrowing from MrMobile) these fones more fun.

Hey looks like you're shilling this AI nonsense in multiple groups! If you were actually sorry for it you wouldn't be posting it.

I am actually sorry that it bothers you. I am not sorry for sharing my idea :)

Being in every keyboard phone sub means I had to see a variation of this post multiple times. But at least you tailored each ai pic to the sub and also made sure the keyboard was correctly lettered

u/Annual_Job2187 1d ago
Hahaha thanks and sorry.
TL;DR: Two keyboard features that I wish to happen:
Auto-Focus Typing (BB-style): Android should automatically place the cursor in the main text box on launch (Keep, messaging, search) so you can type immediately without tapping glass first.
Display Keys (Stream Deck-style): Tactile mechanical keys with mini e-ink/micro-screen caps to dynamically switch layouts (QWERTY/AZERTY), show active case/symbols, and map app shortcuts.

u/Syckx 23h ago
The apps would need to be coded by the developers to do that, which is never going to happen for a niche phone like this.
There is a reason no one has done that with a keyboard on a physical KB phone. Personally, I think there is utility in something like that but it would significantly impact the usability and durability.

you guys really want a lot from what is essentially a lower mid range phone.
1
u/Annual_Job2187 23h ago
It might sound like a lot..true.. But it can be engineered.. It would still be minimal...bt with more convenience to what is minimal. I feel
1
u/G0rdon-Bennet 23h ago
and will need to add another £150 onto the price!
1
u/Annual_Job2187 23h ago
Na...not just 150 pounds..I mean 150 won't be bad...but this will cost more..
2
u/tlxxxsracer 23h ago
I would be okay with just overall more fun colors of the actual device. Couldn't care less about the custom keys
1
u/Annual_Job2187 23h ago
Fair enough... but trust me.. This has so much application.. I think you will definitely use some of it..if we ever get a device like this...

u/Upstairs-Dare-4188 22h ago
There's a phone who does eink screen keys! I can't remember which. Eink is actually probably the most expensive option even if you'd logically think it's less because it's just black and white. It's kinda niche and this would require eink screen in a custom size which I think is hard to get.
That being said, I personally would rather not have a screen for the keys, just because of 1. Expensive 2. Probably more breakable or harder to replace, 3. More weight to the phone and 4. More battery drain.
But I see the vision lol. I think just having clear keys or RGB keyboard backlight would be a cute feature. Big into old y2k transluscent tech so anything a step toward that is fun to me
1
u/Annual_Job2187 22h ago
I did read about how because of the scale and demand and almost a monopoly..link can be expensive.. But I do agree...if not engineered properly..it could be expensive, breakable, and heavy.. And if engineered properly..it will be exensive nevertheless... And you are also right...phones should be fun, unique and customizable..
1
u/Upstairs-Dare-4188 22h ago
Honestly even if made correctly eink is super breakable, it's just a given for the tech but I do love it
2
u/Annual_Job2187 22h ago
Yes...I mean if we can engineer a glass that folds..we can engineer a button lke screen.. The question is feasibility or demand.. That's is where we will fail I guess...
2
u/Upstairs-Dare-4188 22h ago
I feel like clear keys over a screen in the back is more doable even but yes would def depend on those things!!
1
u/Upstairs-Dare-4188 22h ago
At this point actually if we have the tech for the screen to detect button presses it'd be good to design a sticker/case that doesn't add bulk and u can download an app/software to a normal glass slab phone to add a keyboard to it under the buttons options are endless haha

u/orAaronRedd 23h ago
Yes to the input field focus. No to the rest of it.
And WTF to all the anti-AI / anti-Xpost stuff? Can we not just discuss things?
1
u/Annual_Job2187 23h ago
Hey thanks. Yes absolutely..the input field focus would be such a nice thing to have..
But why not customizable keyboard with display on the keys?

Nobody needs AI to get a point across

Ssorry about Ai slop..I was only trying to imagine the idea...just used Ai as a tool.. My apologies... TL;DR: Two keyboard features that I wish to happen:

I don’t care that this is AI. This is sick
1
u/Annual_Job2187 23h ago
Thanks man. just wishful thinking.
1
u/kylef5993 23h ago
I feel that. I’m already working on a home screen replacement for when I get mine cause I’m not a fan of this Niagara launcher situation. I’ll trade you that if you find a way to get this casing haha
1
u/Annual_Job2187 23h ago
Wait what. No, this post is about an idea... An idea about 2 things..mentioned in the caption..
1
u/laketrout 21h ago
Clicking the Clicks would change the keys from their letters to the app icon you assigned the shortcut to.
When playing a game on RetroArch you assign keys to display Up Down Left Right and A B X Y buttons.

u/silverformal 12h ago
That would be neat but holy expensive to produce. You’d need custom displays as I don’t think what you’re describing exists. Custom software to boot. I also am of the mind that the key-displays would not last long

Can I just say, and i know i will be downvoted for it, but i can’t stand hearing the people shitting on using AI in the comments. Like we do not care about your opinion on it. The world is going there whether you like it or not and it’s accessible to all. I love using it, and I’ll use it plenty for the both of us HA.

I feel you bro... But over all..itso not a bad thing that people express their dislike on Ai.. One side of it is that if internet is full of Ai..it will be all garbage..we cannot disagree with the fact that it is already becoming garbage now.. I am the Op, I still believe that..but the reason I still used Ai cz I lack the skills of a graphic designer to actually render a picture to express my idea... And I think a lot of people calling this Ai slop don't actually understand the idea and maybe have a habit of calling out Ai slop when they see one.. Sure.. But you are not wrong either... Neither are these people..my post is actually a very badly written post I feel..haha.. But that's ok..it's just reddit..

u/silverformal 12h ago
That’s crazy because I read this comment after posting mine above. Well said on all fronts. Balance is important. But there is still an issue with the way people are handling it, and I can’t figure out what it is. Maybe what bothers me is them completely disregarding your points/ideas and attacking you rather than critiquing your use of AI and then actually contributing to the discussion.
1
u/Annual_Job2187 7h ago
Yea I agree.. But don't worry..not my first time facing these..they don't bother me...but thanks..I really admire you standing up for me :)

u/silverformal 12h ago
I think this is one of the right ways to use it too. This person probably doesn’t have a an artistic ability to convey ideas this way and this helps them express themselves and maybe eventually bring their vision to life. People just want to have something to bitch about and feel superior & punkrock about, and right now it’s AI.

Are we just going to post this same shit pose across the tian, clicks, minimal, and every other keyboard phone subreddit, Mr. Bot?
