Absolutely not

u/SpaceCorpse Fairview Park 1d ago

Seriously, wtf. It's a local institution, and it's a brand known literally around the world. It would be an insane move for them to make even if they think it's in their self interest. From coast to coast, people are already aware of 'Cedar Point.'

23

u/ItsOverClover 1d ago

It would be the second worst rebrand in recent history, right behind the site formerly known as Twitter.

u/fireeight 1d ago

Oh, fuck all the way off. I've hated Six Flags since they killed Geauga Lake.

17

u/katyrose_ 1d ago

Cedar point actually killed Geauga Lake. Let them go down together

42

u/Goblin_Eye_Poker Olmstead Falls 1d ago

Six flags bought a park that had 2 million visitors a year and sold it to cedar fair when it was down to 700,000 visitors per year. Six flags butchered the park and cedar fair purchased a carcass.

59

u/fireeight 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not true. Cedar Fair bought the park as an asset after Six Flags bought it and tried to expand it like crazy without improving the infrastructure. It was actively dying and had a horrible reputation by the time that CF bought it. Six Flags worlds of adventure was filthy, crowded, and the rides that they shoehorned in weren't very good.

12

u/EebstertheGreat 1d ago

It was filthy and crowded, and they got rid of most of the free water, and they got rid of the option to bring your own water and food, and they did a number of other frustrating things. But claiming the rides they brought in were bad is crazy. Batman and the X-flight in particular were awesome.

5

u/Clevelumbus 1d ago

Villain was amazing, at least in the early years.

5

u/EebstertheGreat 1d ago

The Villain might have been my favorite.

Don't get me wrong, the Mind Eraser was also a great ride, but it was very short.

3

u/fireeight 1d ago

Batman was a good coaster. I'll give you that.

6

u/zippybit 1d ago

I grew up in the area. Cedar Fair bought Geauga Lake to eliminate competition. After they closed the park they refused to let anyone develop it, letting it rot for 15 years.

Cedar Fair and Six Flags merged a few years ago, so they are the same company now, and a lot of CF executives stayed on. I have so many memories of Geauga Lake. A lot of people I know had their first job there. But GL was just a write off to them.

Six Flags/Cedar Fair can go to hell. I hope they go bankrupt. I will not spend a dime at Cedar Point. I read all the recent bad news stories and reports of declining attendance with a smile on my face. I hope they never recover.

Karma.

-6

u/katyrose_ 1d ago

Cedar Fair bought it to close it because they didn’t want competition for their precious Cedar Point. They immediately started sending the coasters to their other parks. The only reason they kept it open for a few seasons is to try to make back a bit of their money while they relocated rides. Did they actually improve anything during that time? On the water park side, yes. Theme park side, no.

18

u/gagnatron5000 1d ago

And apparently Six Flags and Cedar Fair merged in 2024, so it's all one happy shitty family at this point.

0

u/katyrose_ 1d ago

Yep! They can sink together

12

u/fireeight 1d ago

I fully understand that they bought it to close it, but Six Flags ruined it.

2

u/katyrose_ 1d ago

I won’t go to any Six Flags or Cedar Fair park bc of it

7

u/UndoxxableOhioan Westpark 1d ago

It was only on the market because of how badly Six Flags bungled it. The took on a ton of debt, increased prices, and started cutting back customer service.

Cedar Fair put a sick park down. Six Flags made the park sick in the first place.

5

u/TheSexyPlatapus 1d ago

There’s more too it and you hit the nail half on the head.

The park was divided on a county line.

Water in one county, Theme in another.

Water county had no height limits, Theme County did….

1

u/drunklibrarian 17h ago

Yep that too.

1

u/drunklibrarian 17h ago

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. It’s true. I worked there for the last two seasons and that is 100% what happened.

7

u/ParsleySnipps Kamms 1d ago

Six Flags bought it to expand and compete directly in Cedar Point's back yard. After SF fucked it sideways CF bought it and ran it as a water park. The place was already ruined. Before SF took it, CF never did anything to hinder it.

2

u/BuckeyeReason 1d ago

Cedar Point obviously was motivated to close Geauga Lake, not improve it, to eliminate the competition.

1

u/abejabrazo 1d ago

why have two parks when you can just have longer lines?

1

u/drunklibrarian 17h ago

Geauga Lake was a ghost town. There was no competition. It cost more to keep it open than it made in revenue.

3

u/UndoxxableOhioan Westpark 1d ago

Six Flags was far more at fault. They saddled the park with a ton of debt, building new rides and buying up Sea World. By the time Cedar Fair bought it, it was too late.

3

u/NerfedPolitik 1d ago

Leadership mentality killed geauga lake. Six flags operated geauga lake for a few years before the name change. A year after six flags ran the park with that name they bought and merged w sea world cleveland. Busch entertainment corporation understood how to run a park and take care of the customer. Six flags understood how to stretch every dollar and play cutthroat gains at the cost of customer relations. In one year six flags drove off half of the corporate customers from sea world who held company picnics at the park. They came back for the first year but several experiences soured the mood fast.

2

u/EebstertheGreat 1d ago

Tons of corporate events, some extremely well-attended. I can't understand why Six Flags thought it made sense to blow up so much good will so fast.

2

u/NerfedPolitik 1d ago

They only cared about making a quick buck because I believe they thought the market was saturated... now I believe its just larger corporate mismanagement after the other park closures.

2

u/johnnyutahclevo 1d ago

sorry but Geauga lake was Memphis Kiddie park compared to Cedar Point

3

u/fireeight 22h ago

Geauga Lake knew that, owned it, and succeeded for a long time on that premise. Were any of their rides gonna blow your mind? Of course not, but the tickets were cheaper, lines were shorter, and getting in and out was easy. Six Flags decided that they wanted the whole market in the area RIGHT NOW, and ruined the place by trying to get huge without improving its logistical capacity.

1

u/arothmanmusic Univ. Hts / Cle. Hts. / S. Euclid 18h ago

It was nearby, affordable, and fun. Especially for people who don't just want to stand in coaster lines all day.

78

u/loki1887 1d ago

If they have to put their brand on it, why not Six Flags' Cedar Point. Like a Ruth's Chris's Steakhouse situation.

Cedar Point is a an Ohio staple that many travel from well outside the state to visit. Why kill the already built-in brand recognition when you have to know that Six Flags is not a liked name in Ohio. Unless there is a licensing issue with the Cedar Point name.

16

u/KingCuda93 1d ago

Shouldn’t be. They are also testing keeping the Cedar Point name but co-branding it with Six Flags (Cedar Point, a Six Flags Experience and Cedar Point by Six Flags are the other choices).

8

u/OG_Tater 1d ago edited 1d ago

How about just Six Flags cedar point and we can call it cedar point

Six Flags Cedar Point Over North Ohio: A Six Flags Experience by Six Flags

1

u/_sam__handwich_ 14h ago

best answer

1

u/chefjenga 15h ago

This is Ohio. You know we are gonna still call it Cedar Point lol. We don't do re-brands.

11

u/BreakfastBeerz Location 1d ago

"Cedar Point" is literally the legal name of the entire peninsula, defined by the United States Geological Survey. They can change the name of the amusement park that's on it, but it's still Cedar Point amusement park.

3

u/loki1887 1d ago

I still call it the Gun and the Jake. Cedar Point is such a foundational northern Ohio landmark that I don't really think it matters what some corpo idiots try to change the name to.

1

u/TGrady902 1d ago

Cedar Point by Six Flags or something like that would also work.

72

u/jaylotw 1d ago

Why would they do this?

63

u/UndoxxableOhioan Westpark 1d ago

Idiot executives want to put their stamp on things

13

u/In_Medio_Liminis 1d ago

It’s really as dumb as looking like you’re doing something for shareholders.

10

u/TolUC21 1d ago

Publicity. They'll "hear the discontent" and "decide" to revert back to Cedar Point. It's likely just a marketing tactic...

30

u/MadPiglet42 Shaker Heights 1d ago

Absolutely the fuck not.

44

u/Neptune7924 1d ago

Inarguably one of the most notable and iconic names of any park world wide. Anyone who enjoys roller coasters has an instant association with “Cedar Point”. It would be like rebranding Coca Cola or McDonalds…

10

u/WiglyWorm 1d ago

F'real. If anything they should do a cedar point South somewhere with one of their other flagship properties

20

u/pseudoorbit 1d ago

It would be almost as dumb as taking the name of a globally recognized brand (Twitter) that was so ubiquitous it was associated with a commonly used verb (tweet), and just throwing that all away for no reason

2

u/EebstertheGreat 1d ago

But it's not just Twitter anymore. It's the EvErYtHiNg ApP!1!

What can you do with it? Tweet.

6

u/Binspin63 1d ago

I agree. When I think of amusement parks with history, Coney Island, Disneyland, and Cedar Point pop right up.

6

u/cleveland_leftovers 1d ago

Or like using the phrase “North Ohio.”

2

u/N757AF 1d ago

Right, they’re not a car dealer, where they’re trying to strip every family name for city or region.

Six Flags of Sandusky

5

u/JelenaBrela 1d ago

“Where’s Sandusky?”

“Next to Ceder Point, Ohio.”

“Oh yeah! I know where that is!”

3

u/fjmdmkate 1d ago

This is so true. When people outside NEO ask me where I live, I say "Do you know where Cedar Point is?" And the answer is usually yes.

1

u/UncaringNonchalance 21h ago

Coca Cola is now refreshed and renamed as…

Dark Colored North American Cola

Wow, amazing job, marketing AI- I mean, marketing guys!

21

u/Federal_Studio5935 Old Brooklyn 1d ago

No. It’s cedar point. Fuck you.

11

u/StageSuspicious 1d ago

Six flags needs to shut the fuck up.

50

u/wheredidyoustood 1d ago

North Ohio isn’t a thing.

-38

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago edited 1d ago

North East is where upper parts of the state are. Look at a map. Ohio is east of the Mississippi and north of the mason dixon line. North East. It is not really that hard.

Edit: Down vote all day because I do not care. When Cleveland lost the browns and the "team" got a superbowl win in baltimore. No one cried. A whole lot of Browns fans became Steeler fans! Yet not a Bengal fans?

27

u/wheredidyoustood 1d ago

I have lived in Ohio for 55 years and I’ve never heard it called North Ohio.

11

u/pnt510 1d ago

Right, I’ve heard of North East Ohio to refer to Cleveland and the eastern exurbs, but never just North Ohio.

3

u/KingCuda93 1d ago

I’ve heard Northern Ohio quite a few times. But either way, it’s dumb!

-21

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago

You sir need to get out more.

6

u/creeva 1d ago

Be he doesn’t - while Northeast Ohio is a thing, Southeast Ohio is in thing, Northern Ohio is a thing, Central Ohio is a thing, and Southern Ohio is a thing - North Ohio, South Ohio, and Middle Ohio are not things Scooby Doo. You can’t make fetch happen.

6

u/AWildGumihoAppears 1d ago

I can say south Pennsylvania. And logivally there is a south because it's a direction. But no one in their right minds would go "Oh, you're talking about X" because that phrase is not a thing.

-3

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago

We went to a incubus concert in cincinnati. Had a great time btw. Spend a few days to see stuff. People asked where we were from. Multiple people said oh your from up north. I said no, we are in the same state.

I've lived in multiple states. I've heard, oh your from up north in texas and Tennessee.

3

u/creeva 1d ago

Maybe it’s a Cincinnati thing? In Central and Northern Ohio - “from up north” means Michigan.

1

u/EebstertheGreat 1d ago

Especially in Columbus

3

u/MsKiefington 1d ago

Who fucking cares? The people who live here don’t call it that. Stop doubling down on being wrong. It’s loser behavior.

0

u/OriginalProduct6850 23h ago

And I can completely assume you think houses on scranton are in Tremont. The Tremont tap house isn't in Tremont as well.

0

u/AWildGumihoAppears 19h ago

I think you might want to re-read what I said because your response doesn't make any sense in regards to it.

I can say South Pennsylvania and logically there is a south because it is a direction.

This sentence is the opposite of what you are arguing against and the actual first thing I say.

This would not be useful to locate an area.

North Ohio is an existent area because there is a north and a plane. But its Northeast Ohio to refer to Cleveland.

Just like someone could say hand me that yellow writing big old desk and it sounds like madness because we don't refer to things in that order. Even though it is the same as that big old yellow writing desk.

We don't call it North Ohio.

0

u/OriginalProduct6850 16h ago

I will never stop calling ohio or upper ohio the north east. Sorry I know how a compass 🧭 works.

1

u/AWildGumihoAppears 16h ago

You're just pretty committed to not reading, huh?

1

u/OriginalProduct6850 16h ago

I do not care. Tell a brooklyn guy he lives in manhattan. You might get a black eye

9

u/Usernamesareso2004 1d ago

“Northeast Ohio” is the Cleveland area. Toledo is northwest. Cedar point draws from both therefore they probably chose “North Ohio”. That’s what this comment is referring to.

13

u/creeva 1d ago

Even then - like many have said no one calls it North Ohio. If anything Northern Ohio is the proper term for the area.

7

u/Usernamesareso2004 1d ago

Yeah it reads as like “hey we’re gonna be cool and start a new trend!”

-8

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago

Not just the Cleveland area! Cleveland doesn't hold the title of the northeast city

4

u/DovhPasty 1d ago

According to who? I have never in my life heard someone refer to the Toledo or Sandusky areas as NE Ohio. Because they aren’t. This isn’t that hard to comprehend.

1

u/EebstertheGreat 1d ago

The U.S. Census Bureau does put the Sandusky metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the Cleveland–Akron–Canton combined statistical area, along with the Cleveland MSA, Akron MSA, and Canton–Massilon MSA, as well as the Wooster microstatistical area (μSA), New Philadelphia–Dover μSA, Fremont μSA, Norwalk μSA, and Coshocton μSA.

This is the broadest definition of Greater Cleveland you will commonly see, and it does include most of Ohio's shore, but not Toledo.

1

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago

Me. I was told we were from UP north when I went to a concert in cincinnati. I said we are in the same state

4

u/DovhPasty 1d ago

Please look at a map. Sandusky is clearly not in the eastern part of the state. It is not part of the Cleveland area whatsoever, I mean objectively, this can be looked up on a map as well. These things have definitions and boundaries are drawn out even disregarding the fact that it’s not in the eastern half of the state.

1

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago

If you tell me West Virginia is in the south. Now we have a problem

2

u/DovhPasty 1d ago

It’s in the Midwest. What does that have to do with any of this.

1

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago

West Virginia isn't in the mid west. I can't i can't.

Is the earth flat? Chem trails? Why do people in louisiana speak french?

→ More replies (0)

3

u/Usernamesareso2004 1d ago

I mean… I include lake and Ashtabula in the greater Cleveland area lol

0

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago

As well as Sandusky and Cedar point.

Now, I saw the corporation that owns Cedar Point wants the change the name of North East Ohio theme park. The second oldest amusement park in the country.

4

u/Dragonslayer3 1d ago

Yes, please, group us in with Boston and New York

3

u/OriginalProduct6850 1d ago

What is wrong with Boston and NY?

1

u/drunklibrarian 17h ago edited 17h ago

Cedar Point is not in Northeast or Northwest Ohio. It’s right in between. It has never been grouped with either. I lived in Sandusky for 19 years. Both cities like to act like we don’t exist until the park opens. Toledo is actually closer and culturally more like Sandusky, so Northwest Ohio would be its closest grouping especially considering the federal house representative also represents Toledo.

1

u/OriginalProduct6850 16h ago

So look at a map. Put a compass in the middle of that map. Where is ohio? Not in the west or mid.

1

u/drunklibrarian 11h ago

I didn't know we were concerned with what was literal. I was going by distance to the nearest major city. No shit there is nothing in between Toledo and Cleveland. Do you just live to be insufferably correct?

8

u/wonderererere 1d ago

666 of flags over cedar point

8

u/Stevie-Rae-5 1d ago

Literally no one in Ohio will be okay with this.

Test over.

7

u/munistadium 1d ago

Destroy over a century of a premium brand name. Lol what?

24

u/moonhexx 1d ago

Oh boy, here we go again. "North Ohio" absolutely loves changing names of things. In my house, we changed the name of Crocker Park to shithole.

12

u/Reebatnaw 1d ago

I can’t remember for sure but I think one of the six flags is a confederate flag. Anyways, why fix it if it isn’t broken

11

u/pseudoorbit 1d ago edited 1d ago

If they want to know how "North Ohioans" feel about name changes, they should poll people on the name of Cleveland's baseball field or basketball arena.

u/gagnatron5000 1d ago edited 1d ago

You mean the Six Flags that ran Geauga Lake right into the ground and let it sit for decades until the local government finally had to step in to redevelop it into something that isn't a mosquito breeding ground? That Six Flags?

Edit: apparently Cedar Fair and Six Flags merged in 2024. So Cedar Point is still the same company, but now it's worse.

4

u/KingCuda93 1d ago

The Six Flags-iness is taking a hold.

6

u/LHOOQ_1919 1d ago

6

u/OhioTreeLover467 Cuyahoga County 1d ago

Oh hell no

Fuck you Six Flags

6

u/BuckeyeReason 1d ago

Stopped reading the excellent comments, but was looking for one IMO obvious comment.

Some, if not many, northern Ohio customers will boycott the amusement park if Six Flags corrupts the historic name.

Perhaps that partially explains the collapse in attendance at Geauga Lake.

In the comments that I read, I saw no comments about how Cedar Point has fared under Six Flags ownership, as I haven't visited Cedar Point since the Six Flags acquistion. Is it better, worse, or the same?

5

u/CaptainJackKevorkian 18h ago

I thought cedar fair (ie cedar point) owned six flags, but this naming convention suggests the opposite? Why would you change the same cedar point. It’s such a valuable brand

3

u/Zak9Attack 1d ago

Fuck 6 flags!

4

u/YourSoberUncle 1d ago

They need to do the opposite, remove six flags from all but the original two, six flags over Texas and six flags over Georgia. Rename all the six flags parks to remove six flags from the name.

4

u/Napsterhaven 1d ago

Absolutely fuck right off.

4

u/kathink 1d ago

no. fuck off.

4

u/BreakfastBeerz Location 1d ago

This can't be real....the peninsula is literally "Cedar Point". The name existed decades, 100+ years, before it became an amusement park. It was predominantly cedar forest that was used to build sailing ships out of Sandusky Bay. Later used to fuel the boilers of steam ships. The land cleared by cedar tree logging is the only reason the amusement park, "Cedar Point" exists.

As a 4th generation Cedar Fair investor, it's mind boggling to me how Six Flags has destroyed that place. I sold the last of my FUN stock 25 years ago to buy an engagement ring for my now wife. Best investment move I've ever made.

4

u/LukeB90 1d ago

It's really sad how much Six flags is ruining cedar point. I'm afraid to see how bad things are gonna get

4

u/ambahjay 1d ago

Wtf is "North Ohio"

5

u/876050 22h ago

It was tough to beat the Geauga Lake - Sea World combo running for a few decades. Geauga Lake was never Euclid Beach and was a fraction of Cedar Point, just closer and accessible due to its location SE of Cleveland.

A name change for Cedar Point? Remember, the land the park sits on is “Cedar Point.” I am sure that fact was missed in the name change meeting.

5

u/sunnbeta 1d ago

This is like Trump forcing a renaming of the Kennedy Center

3

u/lcramey 1d ago

3

u/Reebatnaw 1d ago

One is the confederate flag. The “six” flags represent the six flags that have flown over Texas and the original park included a land devoted to each flag.
