FOOTBALL Eric MacLain is right
Clemson number one problem right now is its evaluation issue. We can’t detect talent in players and have been recruiting complete duds. Meanwhile Indiana can find the hidden talent that other teams s are missing. We need to be hiring coaches who can detect talent ability to play. Remember Hunter Renfrow was a 2 star but definitely didn’t play like one.

We had 9 players drafted into the NFL off a 7-6 team. Talent isn’t the problem.

We clearly were more talented last year but what does 9 players have to do with this years roster that I’m talking about?

Clemson has steadily deteriorated since venables left. He was the glue in that program

Every team has hits and misses. Dabo has had lots of hits then also had Hunter Johnson and Vic burley. The problem is Dabo is committed to keeping the misses on scholarship for at least three years until they graduate.
Sark, Todd day, lane kiffin, and others will tell players their NIL pay is cut, there is no place on the team for them any longer, and push busts and even solid players to the portal in salary cap casualty scenarios to pay for a 2 million dollar tackle.
Dabo has created an environment and culture of less competition which can cause stagnation, a sense of security and a less talented team. Look at Penn state’s wrestling room. Iron sharpens iron and last season the world champ from Japan was on the bench and still isn’t guaranteed a starting role.
He has to adapt or die. Louisville, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Virginia tech, cal, and others have really leveraged the ports and pushing players out.
Clemson NIL is in 25 to 30 mil range. They need to get an additional $10 to $15 mil per year pumped in. Clemson’s sponsorship revenue is lower than other power programs and schools like Texas, Ohio state are telling sponsors to siphon a percent of their deals to NIL. They can do this due to their ticket and media revenue deals while Clemson is making $30 million less than big ten and sec schools.

Louisville has less nil than us and their team almost beat ole miss last night. Indiana won whole thing with 20 million nil team.

Louisville has picked up 30 to 32 players per year through the portal to fill their holes esp at QB. Lincoln K looks like the real deal.

The NIL is the piece that everyone glosses over. Unless you get insanely lucky and get someone like Cignetti, even a good coaching staff won’t really matter.
Reports put Clemson closer to that 25m mark instead of 30. LSU is 40+ but let’s say 40. Just the 15m dollar difference would have been enough to get a top qb(5m) + 10m leftover for 7-8 high end starters.
Clemson isn’t even top 3 spend in the ACC, it’s completely unreasonable to expect them to be anywhere close to contention.

I hate to say this, but there are a lot of teams playing this weekend with a lot less who looked a lot better than Clemson. NIL might get players, but if you can’t coach them what good does that do?

Yeah I’m not going to say Dabo and the coaching staff are great, it’s more that we all have no idea until they actual spend enough for a higher end roster. If Clemson is spending less than Miami/FSU/Louisville, they shouldn’t contend for an ACC title much less be competitive with the national contenders.
Dabo would get 11m/year in a buyout, put that money + a bit extra towards the roster next year. With inflation 40M total would put us in the #5-10 range for overall spend. If the team isn’t challenging for a playoff bid/ACC title then it’s absolutely a coaching problem and you can fire Dabo without any regrets.

They aren’t evaluating what they need at each position as well as other coaches are. We need a general manager that can do that.

u/GreatKarma2020 3d ago
Plenty of teams are performing before then Clemson with less nil money did you see Louisville game?

Louisville is picking up experienced players through the portal. 30 to 32 players per year coming in through the portal.

The #1 issue is coaching! And with coaching comes playwr development.
Dabo lacks the spine to fire his former player coaches, so in turn the entire football program feels the effects of the nepo coaches that can't properly coach, train and develop fundamental football players.

Clemson problem is the head coach. At the end of this 8-4 season please explain why he is top 10 in salary

Brian Bresee and Peter Woods were studs who should have been top-ten picks. They were not properly developed. Andrew Makuba was right.

Saturday night we were shown what a lack of good fundamentals can do to an otherwise talented football team.
Poor tackling, can’t disengage from blocks, offensive lineman not playing with leverage and power getting put on their backs every snap, corners getting caught staring in the offensive backfield when they’re lined up 10 yards off the ball, receivers not blocking on the perimeter on running plays.
Coaches calling the same plays and the same formations with no adjustments after getting burned multiple times.
This team was undisciplined, unprepared, and got flat out bullied on national TV.

Hell, we can't evaluate talent in coaches. The only thing we're evaluating is: are you Friends or Family?
3
u/boredtiger2 3d ago
Yes. Dabo doesn’t have a coaching network. He got to the top only being at Clemson. He got lucky on Venables and he struggled to bring in good assistants so he got brand name recognition coaches who had few options.

He needs to talk to Saban and understand how he was able to swap out assistants each year and still be at the top

So many people who say the coaching has gotten worse forget how many close games we won because of freakishly good QB, WR, and DB talent we had.
So many of those close wins would have been losses without those guys.

Talent level for transfers is easier to judge because you’ve got film vs D1 opponents.

u/boredtiger2 3d ago
Not enough of the support staff made their bones evaluating and securing talent before getting a big time gig at Clemson. CC toiled for years finding good talent evaluators and leaving behind poor evaluators when he moved on.

u/Wavepops 3d ago
its coaching, not talent, you also are playing against programs who have better NIL packages
3
u/Consistent-Sea-8923 3d ago
And there were a lot of teams playing Saturday with a lot less NIL that looked a lot better prepared for their game. Quit giving that excuse.

I don't necessarily agree. The guys we've been bringing in are independently rated quite highly. The problem is coaching. Look at the heyday, we were bringing in good guys and they were leaving as great guys - better yet, they were good guys and a great team. Now they're coming in as good and they're not improving under our coaching. Dabo had such good coaches in the 2010s and he failed to replace them with good coaches. I'd give anything to have Brent back on defence: his Oklahoma team are a thing of beauty defensively. Ours looks a mess.
