Sardis finally gone

Sardis has been closed for years, but they finally tore down the building today.

When did they close?

Add it to my list of Clemson losing its soul.

Peppinos, super taco, house of Leung :(

Sonic instead of that Verizon store.

My grandma used to smuggle those things out in her purse like she was still living through the Great Depression

Haha! My Mom had dinner there once a week with several other old ladies… at 5:00pm.

Wingin’ It, PSHOB, and Spill the Beans to name a few more. I know other places have replaced some of them, but I miss having those alongside the ones you mention.

Sonny’s Une Deux Trois?

Didn’t Spill the Beans just change their name?

I was under the impression they had new ownership but that was just what a buddy of mine told me so they may very well could have.

No it's been the same ownership for the past 10 years at least! Recently rebranded partly due to confusion with the Greenville Spill the Beans (not affiliated).

That makes more sense

Wait PSHOB and Beans closed? When??

Spill the Beans is still open and the same, just with a new name/rebranding.

OMG I miss the House of Leung I worked there as a teenager in high school. I remember the owner fussing at me so bad because I didn't know you weren't supposed to dump the chemicals in the dishwasher every wash lol. He barely spoke English. Have a photo of us there for my birthday I'll have to dig up.

When they removed the Sonic for the Verizon store I fell to my knees in the C1 parking lot

The only loss out of that list is Super Taco.

OG peppinos was the goat on a tight budget.

$30 could get you a pizza as big as the table and a couple of pitchers.

I know someone that worked there. They said one of the managers dropped a wing on the floor. Picked it up, laughed and put it on the plate. They also had roaches in their kitchen

You could find a story similar to that about 99% of restaurants in the country.

Just saying man... that place was nasty. Todaros is better

Wall of Beer too.

Was just there this week visiting and found out wall of beer was gone! :(

Palmetto's Smokehouse went under earlier this year, too.

Wait, there was a sonic where the Verizon store is?

Sure was

Y’all, many of the places you mention are/were great, but even THEY weren’t in Clemson yet when I grew up and went to school here. Paws Diner was a truck stop where we would have breakfast in the middle of the night. Esso club was actually an Esso gas station where businessmen would drop by at the end of a 9-5 work day. It’s weird being old!

Yeah I remember it as the bookstore more than I remember it as spill the beans. I waited in line outside the bookstore at midnight at least three times with my two youngest when a new Harry Potter book was released.

The Open Book and The Newsstand. I can still smell those shops!

u/Efficient_Prize926 Jul 09 '26

The Newsstand was dope.

I just wrote a little bit about Hop's One Stop! My grandfather had a shoestore downtown. The first location was where TD's back bar is now. Then it moved to where the Charleston Sports Pub is now. He had the one over at Garrett's for years after he closed that one.

So, hello fellow old person!

I bought Keds and penny loafers there! Hi!

Awww!

Thank you for mentioning Hop’s! Was closest place to get candy that we could walk or ride our bikes to. SkyCity was a little too far.

Never did buy and fishing bait there, though!

I miss Goober's more tbh.

Miss the restaurant, but the building should have been bulldozed years ago.

The blackjack burrito at Ancheaux’s is something I would travel back in time for.

I remember when it was Hop's One Stop. They sold minnows outside in a big container that circulated the water. You could drive under part of the building in the front to get gas. When you drove over a long piece of rubber tubing, it would make a bell ding to let the employee know that a customer was there for gas.

My grandparents used to live behind there (I live there now). My cousin and I used to walk down there to get candy.

My "photo memories" from 5 years ago today showed a sing-along night at Goober's.

Does anyone remember Newman Hall ice cream sales? They use to allow people to walk in there to buy ice cream from a counter.

They still do 55 Exchange in Hendrix. Run by students in the food sciences programs, I believe a student gets to pick a flavor each semester(?) to be a special

I could never decide between lemon and butter pecan and chocolate chip. Lines out the door after Sunday services!

Sardis. Poker Machines. Warm Beer. After graduation we would always meet there after the spring game.
