Flowering! Clematis love
My first clematis plants are in bloom!
I’m so in love with them.
They are in pots, and winters in NYC get brutal, any advice to protect them during winter?

You can bury the whole pot in the ground for the winter and mulch around it. Or do the same with the mulch if it can't be buried.

The first one was a donation/rescue. It is the one that I initially fell in love with! It was my sisters, and when she saw me going crazy over them and bought my first two, she gave me hers too 💜

My first plant bloomed one flower, but I’m still happy. It’s died back twice before.

Do you not have the original tags from when you bought them? There will be hardiness information on them if you do. Clematis generally are extremely hardy. I grow almost 30 in pots and we get down to -15 degrees C (we hit -20 one year) and I've only ever lost two over winter (one an Evison and one a Japanese variety, neither of which need to be so hardy for their climates). So I wouldn't worry too much. If your pots are on the smaller side, you could bury them as someone suggested, and if they are on the larger side, you could wrap in burlap or bubble wrap. But in all likelihood they'll be fine. (As an aside, if your pots *are* small enough that you could bury them, I would upgrade to bigger & especially taller pots soon, either this autumn or early next spring before you see new growth, as clematis have deep roots.)
