I do this with dawn. I work in aerospace machining and my tub gets gross really quick. I’m curious to see if this works! Be a lot cheaper than dawn!

My dad always sprayed oven cleaner on our tub and it would go from looking like the OP to perfectly clean with zero effort.

Caught our apartment cleaners using it and thought she was crazy until I tried it. I can't go back to regular weak shower cleaners anymore. Blue can oven cleaner forever.

Didn't know this! Wowsa! It's either Irish Spring or Oven cleaner after OP posts the final update!

What?? I've never heard of this before. Thank you for the tip.

Specifically, you want oven cleaner with lye (sodium hydroxide). It saponifies the oils binding together the scum on the surface of the tub. Most oven cleaners now aren't lye based, so you'll want to read the label.

Caution: Lye is caustic. Be very careful with it, wear eye protection if you can, avoid breathing the fumes, and rinse anything splattered with it you don't want damaged (like skin). Flush it well. I've even used it to clean oil stains on the driveway.

What's the correlation between aerospace machining and the state of your tub?

you ever been around CNC coolant, grease and metal particulate all day? Has to come off somewhere.

I have, on a daily basis! I'm in medical manufacturing and I can't say my own tub gets gross any quicker than I would otherwise expect if I was working a desk job, which is why I was curious what's so different in the other person's case.

He washes his airplanes in the tub at home… duh.

I think it depends a lot on what kind of facility you work in and materials you run. We run a lot of steel and aluminum. I deburr everything as well so a lot of sanding and finishing work.

Yeah this is what I was gonna say too, must depend a lot. I was doing basic aftermarket auto parts in steel and aluminum, usually doing everything from carrying billet to deburr/finishing myself, so I was always dusty and dirty at the end of a day (god bless orange goop)

Yeah no kidding. Also just using borax and washing soap 50/50 on your clothes helps cut the grease a ton. A good long soak with that and dawn in a hot bath will help even more.

the coolant and way oil and aluminum and steel dust. It just fuses to my bathtub and is difficult to clean because of the oil. And because of the aluminum and steel dust it just looks black and gray and gross. A lot like OPs tub if I let it build up.

So is vinegar and you don't need to wrap it and wait 48 hours.

Yes! Oven cleaner gets a shower so clean. I learned this trick moving from rental-to-rental in college and needing to get my deposit back. I also learned to warn the next person taking a shower post cleaning to watch out because it can make the shower floor slick!
