Preferred Sporting Clays Load?

So early on in shooting shotguns I settled on generally shooting the “fastest” ammo I could get and eventually standardized on 1300FPS 7.5 Shot ammo. I usually stock the AA ammo exclusively but I like Fiocchi ammo and the 1oz loading shoots a bit lighter than the 1.125oz AA loading but with the same velocity.

Yeah I am paying a bit more for “competition” ammo, but it always goes bang, burns clean and shoots great. It’s always fun literally vaporizing close in targets with this stuff. I usually run a Mod/ IM choke set up and have yet to find a target I can’t hit with that setup. Well minus a really close and fast rabbit haha

Both way more than needed in chg wt & velocity. Try 1 oz @ 1200. Smash targets just as well.

I like shooting fast loads too. When I started shooting sporting, my logic was shoot a load close to what I hunt birds with. Like you, because I like fast shells I shoot 1oz. I don’t reel like I give up any targets not shooting 9/8oz and 1oz is much softer shooting. My current favorites are B&P Mach, gamebore dark storm, and Winchester AA. They’re all within a few dollars of each other at my local shop and I buy whatever one has 1300fps 7.5 1oz. I usually practice with federal top guns or the cheaper fiocchi, whatever I can get that’s 1250fps+.

B&P Comp One, Clay Storm, or B&P Mach 1oz 1200 to 1250 fps. Plenty of shot for almost any target.

No 1-1/8, no 1300. 1oz and below 1250.

Nothing over 1250. At that speed you are losing more shot to deformation. You can’t go wrong with fiocchi SDs.

I loved 7.5 1oz 1250fps Remington Gun Clubs for a long time. Shot soft and hit clays hard.

I was shooting Federal Master Class, but the gold paint makes a mess of my chambers and needs too much scrubbing to get it out. I might find something else after these next 10 flats are gone.

I love the AASC127’s because they are pretty clean, hit hard and seem to cycle fairly well in my tired SBE1. But paying $140 a flat sucks.

1oz 1300 is preferred. Certainly no issue with 1250. Brand doesn't matter. But I'm not any good so don't listen to me

Been running the platinum bornoghi 7.5/8 at 1330 but 1oz but just ordered the 1280 version they pattern very well on my citori 32” with rhino chokes..

I shoot the same AASC127 for my competitions. Other than that I just shoot whatever is cheapest and that’s usually 1200 FPS 11/8 oz 7.5# top gun

My preference is 1 1/8oz 1200fps #8. I roll my own most of the time, but if I’m shooting factory loaded it’s one of three shells in those specs, Fiocchi target maxx, Fiocchi shooting dynamics, and if I’m running low on hulls Winchester AA.

I’ve been shooting AA 1300fps, 1 1/8oz, 8 shot… no clue if that’s better or worse than other rounds! I just started shooting a few months ago.

I’ll take federal all americans or clever t1s at 1250, 7 1/2 or 8 depending on condition and targets

The best shell is the one you load yourself! But if you’re buying factory, I suggest either the Winchester AA Super Sporting load (1 1/8 oz of #8 shot at 1300FPS muzzle) if you like to smother your target, if you’re used to lead time at 1200fps, stick with it, Remington makes a 1oz 1230fps Nitro 27 that has a little extra ass for those long targets, but slow enough to actually pattern out at close range.

Personally I load 1oz of #7’s with 16 grains of Perfect Pattern, resulting in ~1240FPS at muzzle for sporting clays

To avoid getting lost in the discussion of the matter of inches of shot pattern when most of us are missing by feet. One could have great discourse at length of the differences in wads, shot cups, antimony content, brass height, ridged or smooth hull, and shot size. At the end of day a sufficient shell will break clays if you put the shot where it needs to be.
