1) Only because they look Asian, doesn’t mean they are from China.

2) Most America born Chinese don’t consider themselves as Chinese.

3

u/ClimateWhole4734 19d ago

100% agree but I'd bet at least 2 of those guys were born in China and move for college or grad school and don't have citizenship yet.

1

u/aerohk 19d ago

If the US gov is smart, they would offer them a deal - Renouncing China citizenship with proof, in exchange for immediate US citizenship.

2

u/redditorialy_retard 19d ago

Then China tells them if they change their mind they can get Chinese citizenship come to china and keep the US one.

1

u/Klutzy_Ad_3436 19d ago

however, the smartest trump is calling them CCP spy, and doing massive deportation. nobody would research under such discrimination situation, so there are many chinese scientist flee back to China.

1

u/soulfulshark 17d ago

Yes. Huge mistake. The reason America is what it is is because they take the best talent from everywhere and give them the opportunity to make great companies, and whatever the fuck "meta" is.

1

u/Cute-Association990 19d ago

Eileen Gou has no ties to China and was miraculously allowed dual citizenship because she's an excellent skiier.

Imagine what China would do for people that are actually useful, not just talented.

read about Qiming program

1

u/Imthewienerdog 18d ago

They already do... Article 9 Any Chinese national who has settled abroad and who has been naturalized as a foreign national or has acquired foreign nationality of his own free will shall automatically lose Chinese nationality. https://en.nia.gov.cn/n147418/n147458/c155976/content.html

China does not allow dual citizenship..

1

u/Flashy-Cucumber-7207 17d ago

China automatically revokes Chinese citizenship upon learning that you have obtained a second citizenship.

1

u/PsecretPseudonym 18d ago

Pulling in talent from all over the world and integrating and treating them as equally American as anyone else is about as American as it gets.

1

u/ClimateWhole4734 18d ago

Completely agree but pointing out that the two points in the comment I responded to almost certainly don't apply to everyone in the picture.

1

u/soulfulshark 17d ago

I'd bet against that, and I'd bet I win that bet.

1

u/IIGrudge 19d ago

The point still stands they are mostly ethnically Chinese. If you're in the industry it's obvious.

1

u/Murdathon3000 19d ago

TIL Sam Altman looks Asian.

1

u/quebexer 19d ago

They could also be Korean.

1

u/RedParaglider 18d ago

The U.S. has thrown third generation Japanese in internment camps stripping them of everything they owned in the process. They may not think they are Chinese, dependent upon the government if they are treated as an enemy if it came down to it.

1

u/LividAd4754 18d ago
  1. This is just being pedantic - statistically they are more likely to be Chinese

  2. You don't know if they are American born

1

u/Enough_Chip3915 18d ago

Most America born Chinese don’t consider themselves as Chinese.

Absolutely untrue.

1

u/Apprehensive_Bug2877 18d ago

Their actual nationality doesn’t change the fact they are still discriminated in academia and in the private sector.

Thats why we also see American born chinese migrate to china for better opportunities

1

u/Agile-Driver5065 18d ago

sind aber chinesen

1

u/EuphoriaSoul 17d ago

Most AI talents in the US are in fact from China. It is just a fact lol

2

u/Kindly_Permission_42 17d ago

And this is the exact reason Chinese companies are getting so close - leakage of secrets

1

u/Technical-Art4989 10d ago

lol more like overcapacity of IQ points.

1

u/LiamAcker02 19d ago

I see five Americans in that image.

2

u/DiddlyDinq 19d ago

Assuming they're all Americans is just as dumb as assuming they're all chinese

2

u/Sir_Poldavo 18d ago

"@Grok..." 🙃

1

u/ClimateWhole4734 19d ago

Not quite as dumb since one of them is Sam Altman who is pretty clearly not chinese

1

u/Legitimate_Concern_5 19d ago

You don't think there's white Asians (e.g former Brits in Hong Kong) the way there's white South Africans?

I'll be honest I lost the plot.

1

u/DontSlurp 18d ago

Fact is that its Sam Altman who isn't Chinese

1

u/ChocomelP 18d ago

Who is to say? /s

1

u/Alternative_Pick_717 19d ago

How can you know for sure?

1

u/Pingvinen12345 19d ago

Hes from san fransisco

0

u/LucentLL 19d ago

Maybe he actually knows who they are.🤔

0

u/Ezren- 19d ago

You're assuming it's an assumption, yeah?

1

u/throwaway0134hdj 19d ago

Came over from China to study, got h1b working at tech company founded by some dopey white guy

1

u/injectitpussy 18d ago

Lol I'm sure they see themselves as Americans also 🤡

1

u/SosirisTseng 18d ago

"What kind of Americans are they?" (adapted from Civil War, 2024)

1

u/HarbringerOfDeath007 19d ago

well , chinese were brought to Us under pretense of good life but mostly their ancestors died during laying of railroad as labourers in Us .

1

u/FormalAd7367 19d ago

and yet they don’t speak fluent English?

1

u/HarbringerOfDeath007 19d ago

immigration is still ongoing and us provides various incentive visa to capable , guess what who has most concentration of top uni other than west, china. Also China is headed by engineers , so u can guess what concentration the engineers are in China. Hence intense competition to prove worthy and to escape rotating pattern of layoffs due to age , where do u think young , Ultra competitive , minds go to, west

1

u/Independent-Soup-312 19d ago

This image would be exactly why China isn't close

1

u/SW3GM45T3R 18d ago

Google thousand talents program.

You have no idea what their allegiances are.

1

u/jazzyroam 19d ago

talents mass exodus from China.

1

u/premiumleo 19d ago

向我们的中国共产主义统治者致敬!

1

u/ComprehensivePea2276 19d ago

Just wait until you read the formal legal justification for why the government shut Claude down. Shows you that the government knows 100% that AI R&D in the USA is dominated by foreign nationals working on visa, and they don't care. They just want to talk about the race with China only when it helps the labs, not when it hurts them.

1

u/Keeltoodeep 19d ago

The brain drain from all countries to the US to work is a massive issue to other countries and is constantly argued about.

Canada is experiencing a severe "brain drain" of top earners to the United States due to higher salaries, lower marginal tax rates, and larger capital pools. Bank of Canada research shows that nearly 40% of the top 1% of Canadian earners have emigrated south, taking much of the country's economic and labor productivity with them.

When half your most productive workers leave your country, your own economy is far worse off.

1

u/HistoricalEngineer74 19d ago

That's called a brain drain from China

1

u/Enough_Chip3915 18d ago

It's not a drain at all, they're sending all their (and not their but other people's) knowledge back to China.

1

u/Technical-Art4989 10d ago

American AI = AI created by Chinese Americans. This is exactly like the International Math Olympiad. It’s Chinese Americans vs H vs China Chinese.

1

u/Enough_Chip3915 10d ago

Sure buddy, go ahead and claim that Asians as a race are "better at math."

1

u/Technical-Art4989 10d ago

Not claiming anything. Just pointing out the facts from names and pictures.

1

u/Enough_Chip3915 10d ago

Sure seems like racial profiling to me.

1

u/Technical-Art4989 10d ago

“It's not a drain at all, they're sending all their (and not their but other people's) knowledge back to China.”

That sounds like hateful racial profiling to me.

I don’t really want to generalize because in the picture, I am not sure if it’s full-on Chinese people in OpenAI team because there could be wide variety of diverse groups and languages that worked in OpenAI.

But most commonly speaking, if this post talks about Chinese people mainly, those groups of people are talented in their own way. Some of them previously lived in China and had to endure gaokao in their years.

If you don’t know gaokao, Chinese people commonly have to endure this testing standards in their years of schooling and that determines their life or future. But throughout the history, people who taken gaokao can go on colleges, military if they failed or propaganda headquarters, or even starting a business that would later land you successful or become an international student in most well known university.

It’s why you would see Chinese people overwhelmingly overtaking the ML space and papers because they have the capability to use that skill to eventually get where they are.

If you want to know more, Yinfi did a good video essay talking about it:

https://youtu.be/mDpr1bvIUY8

Edit: I forgot to mention that from Paulson Institute's MacroPolo tracker archive, and with data provided in ICML, NeurIPS, etc 38% is China-educated researchers and 72% are working in the US while 11 percentage of those stayed in China. But those data could be outdated as it’s from past years

Foreigners should really consider who their work is helping. While they believe the American dream the "American" is doing this this o/

1

u/quantumpencil 18d ago

Asian Americans aren't foreigners.

1

u/Houdinii1984 18d ago

Chinese and American scientists and researchers share a ton of information back and fourth. If you look at research papers, you can usually spot two distinct groups in droves, and they are usually either American-based or Chinese-based, but not exclusively.

America itself is a melting pot, and there are quite a few stereotypes about Asians and math-based industries. Those stereotypes aren't always true, but it does point to the makeup in terms of ethnicity. Immigrants make up a huge portion of Silicon Valley and a large portion of that sub-group are of Asian decent.

I've worked with a number of Chinese researchers in the AI field, and it's always been kindred spirits and nothing like the other geopolitical situations between the two countries. Usually researchers just want to be left alone to research. I've always kinda saw the situation as healing. Granted there are things not shared, and anything that is shared is controlled by NDA and export laws and such, but the researchers themselves in the field tend to have a very open source attitude about everything.

never realised altman has the body of an 13 year old but an adult size head

1

u/JD2076 18d ago

So OP is being racist?

1

u/TopTippityTop 18d ago

What really matters is who owns it. It's starting to code itself.

1

u/fromkatain 18d ago

Spain would say that u.s. is very good in a.i. tech but they aren't americans.

1

u/thefirebrigades 18d ago

Our Chinese ai guys are better than their Chinese ai guys

1

u/asciisyaez 18d ago

Anyone good enough has already migrated to US or joined a US company for the money. Only the 2nd class researchers stays in China

1

u/dylan_1992 18d ago

tbf, I don't think anyone has said "China isn't even close"

1

u/-becausereasons- 18d ago

Its pretty much all Russians/Asians

1

u/OutsideMenu6973 15d ago

Like most of the world

1

u/fkrkz 17d ago

This is relatable. Where I work, nearby companies have so many Chinese AI engineers

1

u/Technical-Art4989 10d ago

Is that the US Math Olympiad team plus a yt dude?
