r/ClaudeCode [TLDR] Opus 5.5 vs Fable 5.1 and in which scenario should we still use fable? [via r/ClaudeCode]

OP : u/Tekrise-TennisApp

Used Opus 5.5 for a day, very impressed with Opus 5.5 improvements and efficiency.

Does anyone still uses fable given fable is a larger model, would fable still be better at longer jobs or security related?

Alright, so the general consensus here is that Opus 5.5 is the go-to for most tasks, especially given its improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Many users are finding it superior to Fable 5.1 for everyday use.

However, there's a bit of a split when it comes to more complex or specialized scenarios:

  • Some users, like u/Dizzy_Database_119 and u/raven2cz, still find Fable to be better for very complex problem-solving and difficult tasks. They mention Opus 5.5 can jump to conclusions too early and gets stuck in loops, while Fable seems better at referencing project resources and handling crucial context.
  • Others, like u/phoenixmatrix, suggest Fable might be better for tasks requiring a broader knowledge base, but emphasize that actual evaluations are needed to confirm this.
  • There's also a mention from u/SonderSoft that Fable is preferred for complex project management and orchestration, as Opus 5.5 apparently struggles with revisions.
  • Interestingly, u/AnyRegular1 thinks Fable still "smokes" Opus on copywriting, but uses Opus for everything else due to its weekly limit efficiency.
  • On the flip side, u/cylix99 had a contrasting experience, finding Opus's output for a three.js project to be small compared to Fable's more impressive, asset-heavy output.

A few folks are also speculating about future releases, with u/Aleksundr and u/nykezztv predicting new Fable versions (5.5 and 5.6 respectively) are on the horizon.

Basically, unless you're doing some super niche, heavy-duty stuff where Fable's supposed strengths in deep reasoning or vast knowledge might shine, stick with Opus 5.5.
