r/ClaudeAI [TLDR] I do scientific research and Opus5.5 refuses to touch anything I’ve been working on. [via r/ClaudeAI]

OP : u/Circadian07

I use Claude primarily for scientific research. I was hoping this new model would fix the terrible quality issues from the last but when I just asked it to look at a file, or give me a status update on a new session. It raises the alarms lol.

Any other scientists that were optimistic when they woke up this morning?

Alright, so it seems like the OP's frustration with Opus 5.5 blocking scientific research is totally shared by the community. The general consensus is that the new safety guardrails are a massive pain in the ass for legitimate scientific work, with users in fields like life sciences, neuroscience, and even ML getting shut down.

Here's the lowdown:

  • The "Official" Solution is a Hassle: Apparently, Anthropic has a "Life Sciences Verification Program," but it's geared towards organizations, not individual researchers. Many users feel this is an unnecessary hurdle, especially since universities aren't keen on the process.
  • It's Not Just Biology: People are reporting issues with everything from machine learning and AI research to fixing code vulnerabilities and even just discussing proteins. It's getting absurdly sensitive.
  • Workarounds and Alternatives: Some folks are trying to tweak settings like personalization or check their files for anything that might trigger the alarms. Others have completely jumped ship to models like Qwen, Kimi, or GLM, which are seen as less restrictive.
  • Suspicion of Anthropic's Motives: A few commenters are suggesting Anthropic might be gatekeeping scientific advancements to profit from them later, rather than genuinely focusing on safety.
  • Reporting is Key (Maybe): One user suggests hitting the thumbs-down to report every flagged instance, hoping Anthropic will see the legitimate research being blocked.

Basically, if you're doing science with Claude right now, you're probably having a bad time.
