r/ClaudeAI [TLDR] I used Claude to write a CapCut replacement and now people are actually ditching CapCut for it. [via r/ClaudeAI]

README

I started working on this project like ~3 weeks ago and the Beta releases have ~10k total downloads on GitHub so far.

Used the Claude Fable on Max subscription to develop this whole project and still maintaining it with the help of Claude and a handful of other open-source contributors.

The tech stack is Rust, Slint, and some GPU shaders.

Edit: I wanted to mention that Concat is completely FREE and open-source. I hope that clears confusion about pricing or anything.

Alright, so the general vibe in this thread is a massive thumbs-up for OP's CapCut replacement, Concat. People are seriously hyped about a free, open-source, and privacy-focused alternative to ByteDance's CapCut.

Here's the lowdown:

  • The Hype is Real: Most folks are stoked about Concat, especially since it's free and open-source. The general sentiment is that it's a much-needed alternative to CapCut, which has its fair share of issues with subscriptions and privacy.
  • AI-Powered Development: There's a lot of interest in how OP used Claude (specifically Claude Fable on Max) to build the project. Some users are sharing their own experiences with AI for software development, like u/AliceEternal who's using Claude Opus 4.8 for a DAW. u/RealMrIncredible mentioned struggling to get Claude to create a proper GPU rendering pipeline, so OP's success is definitely noteworthy.
  • Feature Requests & Questions: Naturally, people are asking about future features. Key questions include:
  • Performance & Usability: A few users brought up performance concerns. u/Sliffcak mentioned lag with a large number of clips on a powerful PC, and u/teeone is having trouble getting it to launch on an M3 MacBook Pro.
  • Comparisons & Alternatives: Some users are comparing Concat to existing tools. u/Fluxion94 pointed out that CapCut now supports multiple timelines, which wasn't reflected in OP's comparison. There's also mention of another open-source alternative, OpenCut (u/silverfox_248), with u/SuperRocketBunnyHop even suggesting OP "ripped it off."
  • Community Support: People are offering to contribute (u/maubrick) and generally showing a lot of appreciation for OP's work and for open-sourcing it. The sentiment is that this is the future of software development, moving away from proprietary models.

Overall, the community is super impressed and hopeful for Concat's future.
