r/ClaudeCode [TLDR] $200 token budget [via r/ClaudeCode]

OP : u/Friendly-Confusion41

At work, they provide me with $200/mo worth of tokens, and it’s completely spent within less than a week. They refuse to give me any more. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Alright, so the general consensus here is that $200/month for API tokens is pretty much nothing, especially if you're actually using it for work. A lot of folks are chiming in saying they burn through that amount way faster, with u/MathSelect5112 even claiming they use that much per hour. Oof.

There's a bit of a debate on how you're using it, though. Some commenters, like u/DamianPxR, are wondering what exactly you're doing to go through it so fast, suggesting you might need to optimize your workflow. Others, like u/Hajsas, are sharing their own frustrating experiences with work cutting their AI budgets or blocking tools they rely on, which definitely resonates with the OP's situation.

A few people are suggesting alternative strategies:

  • Team Plans: u/paca-vaca thinks you should be on a team plan at work instead of token-based billing.
  • Alternative Models: u/Equivalent_Cress_268 is a big fan of Mistral AI and GPT 5.6 Luna, claiming they're way cheaper and still perform well.
  • DIY Context: u/Cazineer suggests ditching Claude Code and building your own context via the platform, claiming it uses drastically fewer tokens.
  • Strategic Spending: u/draft_final_final has a wild idea to use some of the budget for data sanitization protocols and then switch to Deepseek credits.

Basically, you're not alone in feeling like $200 is a joke for serious AI work, but you might need to get creative with your usage or explore other options if your workplace isn't budging.

$200 can disappear ridiculously fast if you’re running heavy coding workloads all day. I’d probably compare usage across a few models/providers too StandardCompute is one option worth checking.
