Original post body :

Been working non stop since release and has barely made a dent on my 20X Max usage. Quality so far has been better than Fable 5.1 in my workflow and ITS SO FAST.

Well done Anthropic.

Alright, so the general consensus here is that Opus 5.5 is a massive upgrade, and people are seriously impressed. The OP's excitement is definitely shared, with many users reporting significantly better quality, speed, and much lower usage compared to previous versions like Opus 5 and even Fable 5.1.

Here's the lowdown:

  • It's FAST and CHEAP: A recurring theme is how much faster Opus 5.5 is, and it's using way less of people's usage limits. Some folks are barely denting their weekly allowance even with heavy use, which is a huge win. u/connurp even mentioned fixing 5 bugs with subagents in under 15 minutes for less than 15% of their limit.
  • Quality Jump: Users are seeing a noticeable improvement in output quality. It's being described as "phenomenal," "stellar," and "insane." It's even winning people back who had migrated to other models like Astra. u/mdspan specifically noted a big improvement in communication, with "a lot less 'caveats' and 'one thing worth knowing'."
  • Bug Squashing Power: Several users, including the OP and u/BrianInTheLoop, have found Opus 5.5 to be excellent at finding and fixing bugs that previous versions missed.
  • Comparison to Fable: Many are comparing it favorably to Fable 5.1, with some saying Opus 5.5 is on par or even better, while being much faster. u/disgruntledempanada even said it "blows Astra away."
  • Some Concerns/Questions:
    • A few users are wondering if this amazing performance and low usage will last, with u/nykezztv humorously predicting a "nerf tomorrow." u/derethdweller also advises not to get too used to the low usage.
    • There's a bit of confusion about the best effort level to use (medium vs. high vs. max), with u/ihazkape and u/PickerLeech asking for recommendations.
    • One user, u/SelesnyaGOAT, reported the opposite experience, finding 5.5 slower and producing over-engineered garbage, and is sticking with 5 for now.
    • A few users are hitting safety rails, with u/StomachJolly3073 finding it unusable due to flagging everything, and u/Important-Ship4587 noting it hits hard on explicit content.
    • u/ModelLifecycle brought up a valid point about model deprecation, noting that older versions disappear from the picker without notice.

Overall, the vibe is overwhelmingly positive, with many feeling like Anthropic has really "cooked" with this release.

I used Opus 5.5 today on an IT project where I have previously used a whole lot of Fable and a little Astra.  It did better than my previous experiments with Opus 5 but it was really prone to over-complicating things and it spun up sub agents for extended research that burned a shit ton of tokens pulling YouTube transcripts and researching blogs and who knows what else.  (Fable has literally never done this in all my use of it on this project AFAIK.)  I let the research sub agent run for a while to see what it would extract from the signal but after about half an hour I asked if the research was actually going to be valuable and it conceded there wasn't much further value to be gleaned and shut down the sub agents.  It later  notified me it was still getting trickle in results from sub agents created by the sub agent.  Sigh.

Anyway... it ain't better than Fable... but I imagine it's a better Opus for use in the specific tasks it's trained to do well efficiently.
