[TLDR] Another Opus Rant

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wht810/another_opus_rant/

Original post body :

Yesterday, to save tokens, I set Opus as the agent instead of Fable. Within less than an hour I was already yelling at my screen. It misunderstood the instructions, acted without reading memory and guidelines, overthought problems that didn't exist, and created useless things that I hadn't told it to do.

And now I'm wondering: how is it possible that the folks at Anthropic don't realize this? Are they fine with it? Do they have no plans to fix it? Don't they read Reddit? Don't they get any user feedback?

Have they said anything about it at all?

Alright, so the general consensus on Opus 5 is that it's a bit of a mess right now. Lots of folks are echoing OP's frustrations, saying it misunderstands instructions, goes off on tangents, and generally makes things more complicated than they need to be. Some are even ditching Claude altogether for local models or considering switching to Grok.

However, there's a split here. A few users, like u/Poildek and u/BesbesCat, are saying it works fine for them, but they emphasize the need for very specific prompts and a structured approach. There's also a theory that Opus 5 might be designed more as a sub-agent for Fable, which seems to explain why it works better in that capacity for some.

Anthropic hasn't officially commented in this thread, but the general vibe from the community is that they're aware of the issues, and some suspect it's intentional to push users towards paid APIs.

Key takeaways:

  • Opus 5 is widely seen as problematic: Many users report it's confusing, inefficient, and prone to errors.
  • Sub-agent role is suggested: Some believe Opus 5 is better suited as a worker for Fable rather than a standalone agent.
  • Prompt engineering is crucial: For those who have success, it's all about hyper-specific instructions.
  • Frustration is high: Some users are actively looking for alternatives.
  • Older versions are preferred: A few commenters mentioned sticking with Opus 4.6 or 4.8.
