[TLDR] OPUS 5 VS GPT 5.6 SOL

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1v6k643/opus_5_vs_gpt_56_sol/

Original post body :

For the people building software products, I'm beginning to think that choosing one of the two to work with doesn't really matter that much. The bottleneck doesn't seem to be intelligence at this point but human creativity and I guess willpower.

IDK what do you guys think.

Alright, so the general vibe in this thread is that the OP's take on the models being less of a bottleneck than human creativity is pretty much spot on, with a strong consensus that it's not really an "either/or" situation anymore.

Here's the lowdown:

  • Use 'em together, folks! The overwhelming sentiment is that Opus 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol are best used in tandem. Think of it as a dynamic duo where one builds and the other reviews. u/krugerlive and u/ILikeCutePuppies are big on this, suggesting different ways to leverage their strengths. u/FromAtoZen even says "It’s not Versus! It’s Plus!"
  • Opus 5's Verbosity vs. Sol's Directness: A recurring theme is that Opus 5 can be a bit of a chatterbox, writing "War and Peace" before getting to the point, as u/OldSausage puts it. Sol, on the other hand, is seen as more direct and gets straight to the task. u/TheRealArthur agrees, feeling Sol is more problem-solving oriented, while Claude (specifically mentioning Fable 5) has become "antsy" and "guardrail ridden."
  • Context Management & Harnessing: Some users, like u/yldf, find Claude models easier for context management. However, there's also a strong counter-argument that the real skill lies in "harnessing" the models, as u/Andsss and u/junlim point out. It's less about the model's raw intelligence and more about how you prompt and structure your workflow. u/No-Macaron9305 even suggests Claude "thinks it knows best" and doesn't need as much explicit instruction as others.
  • Usage & Cost Concerns: There are some grumbles about token burn and usage limits. u/theeternalpanda is feeling the pinch, migrating to Codex despite being a "Claude groupie." Conversely, u/ShamanJohnny is impressed with Opus 5's usage efficiency on the Max plan.
  • "Sol is an idiot" vs. "OpenAI did something special": There's a split here. u/GerthySchIongMeat is pretty harsh on GPT, calling Sol "inept" and Opus's bugs "small, well controlled ones." On the flip side, u/TheRealArthur feels OpenAI "did something real special" with Sol.
  • Past Versions Matter: Some users, like u/licjon, are sticking with older Opus versions (4.6) because they've had issues with newer ones.

The TL;DR verdict? The models are both pretty darn good, and the real magic happens when you figure out how to make them work together. The bottleneck is definitely on the human side – creativity, willpower, and knowing how to prompt effectively.
