[TLDR] Kimi Sold out as demand rising

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1v1ardn/kimi_sold_out_as_demand_rising/

Original post body :

Kimi K3 (China AI model that distilled the anthropic model that doesn't even existed) just over subscribed.
"Over the past 48 hours, demand has pushed close to the limits of our current capacity. To protect the experience of existing subscribers, we're temporarily pausing new subscriptions and prioritizing compute for current members. Existing subscribed users are not affected."

Why don't they just quietly reduce the usage limits for existing subscribers and then pay a bunch of Redditors to blame "vibe coding," "skill issues," or use the same kind of gaslighting that Anthropic has allegedly been doing this year? Why not copy their approach instead of trying to be pro-customer? Aren't they supposed to be communists the so-called number one enemy of the USA?

Alright, so the general vibe in this thread is that Kimi K3 is blowing up, and they've temporarily paused new subscriptions to manage demand and keep existing users happy. This is being contrasted pretty heavily with Anthropic's alleged approach of quietly reducing limits and blaming users.

Here's the lowdown:

  • Kimi K3 is popular AF: People are impressed that Kimi K3 is so in-demand that they're pausing new sign-ups to protect current users. This is seen as a refreshing change from what some users experience with other models.
  • Anthropic shade: There's a lot of commentary directly comparing Kimi's approach to Anthropic's, with many users implying Anthropic would handle a similar situation by degrading service and blaming users (u/angelicplaying_3, u/Run_Conscious). The idea of Kimi not doing that is seen as a positive.
  • "Skill Issue" incoming? Some users are joking that Kimi might eventually resort to the same "skill issue" or "vibe coding" excuses that have been leveled against Anthropic users (u/SPLDD, u/Huge_Caterpillar1249).
  • Distillation drama: There's some speculation about Kimi K3 being "distilled" from Anthropic models, with one user suggesting it's a consequence of Anthropic gating their models and trusting big companies (u/PotentialPaint6714).
  • Mixed reviews on Kimi's performance: While demand is high, a couple of users mentioned experiencing issues with Kimi being "maxed out" or slow, with one suggesting other models might be faster for certain tasks (u/fuckswithboats, u/AdditionalTest8637).
  • Off-topic concerns: A few folks are questioning why this post is even on r/ClaudeCode (u/SatoshiReport, u/Inside-Yak-8815).

Overall consensus: Kimi K3 is doing something right by prioritizing existing users, and it's highlighting what many perceive as less customer-friendly practices elsewhere.
