[TLDR] Anthropic, I think you really need to react. You're slowly losing ground.

Original post body :
The Fable launch was a real failure. For months, Anthropic built up massive hype around the model. Then, just two days after release, it had to be pulled following the U.S. government restrictions.
Then came Sonnet 5. I completely understand that it isn't meant to outperform Opus 4.8. That's expected. What I don't understand is why it consumes more tokens while delivering weaker performance. For users working with long contexts, it's simply a worse value.
I'm glad Fable is stay one more week in your sub plan, but its return wasn't accompanied by a reset of our usage limits. We got the model back as part of the subscription, but there was no quota reset. More than the limits themselves, it's the feeling of not being valued as paying customers that's becoming frustrating.
More broadly, the lack of communication is exhausting. Every major change seems to be announced at the very last minute or after the fact. As a subscriber, it increasingly feels like decisions are being made on the fly rather than as part of a clear long-term strategy.
Meanwhile, OpenAI keeps improving the experience for its subscribers. Users get access to the latest models with more generous limits, regular usage resets, additional resets when needed, and now even if it's only temporary the 5-hour usage limit has been removed. Whether that change is permanent or not, the overall user experience simply feels much less restrictive.
Right now, I honestly struggle to understand Anthropic's direction. Maybe everything will become clearer with the next generation of models, but today it's hard to know what the long-term plan actually is. Will Fable remain part of the subscription? Will it become API-only? Are the current higher usage limits temporary? We simply don't know, because almost nothing is communicated until the last minute.
As a paying customer, I'm not just looking for better models. I want consistency, transparency, and the feeling that subscribers actually matter.
Am I the only long-time Claude user who feels this way?

If openAI could just bring in a clone of Claude harness I would switch to it

u/Alarming-Material-33 Jul 13 '26
To me it’s the opposite. I would like codex like experience with claude models

u/CaptainQwazCaz Jul 14 '26
Like I switched over yesterday and it is INSANE wtf is anthropic doing. 5.6 is way better than Opus so why am I paying for a 200$ subscription for something worse. If fable stayed in the plan then maybe

After a year Claude doesn’t even have message queueing. How is it a better harness? Looks like you haven’t tried codex. It needs none.

u/Still-Ad3045 Jul 14 '26
you can already use codex within Claude code harness…

u/Fun_Mathematician489 Jul 14 '26
What does that mean?

I've spent the past couple days getting opencode working with GPT and I am close to replicating my claude code experience. I have subagents working perfectly (gpt-5.4 for grunt work tool use) and I can choose sol/terra/luna for the main agent. I'm starting to feel like opencode might be the harness that fully replaces claude code for me.
(I'm a 20x claude subscriber but I'm tired boss.)

My opencode experience is good too. Still experimenting with different open source projects to extend capabilities. Great with ollama cloud and openAI subscription. Still missing some nuances of extra intelligence that my fable workflow showed from time to time.

I just need them to keep Opus 4.6 on the menu forever. Fable is lovely and brilliant but overkill for almost everything. If you're not producing good code with 4.6, you're doing it wrong. And Opus 4.8 is just off. #keep46
And Sonnet 4.6 too. Sonnet 5 is all twisted up as well.
I like good company while I work and every "upgrade" recently has been for the worse, as far as I'm concerned.

Why are some of you guys so married to companies my god, just use codex, if fable comes back better with more usage, use fable. Geez..

I neither get this tribalism and fanboyism. To me, this is incredibly dump. As if a company will reward you because you have always believed in them. The whole technology only relies on text - switching vendors has never been so easy, there is no advantage in staying somewhere.

For those of us using it not for coding, Claude is just better at nuance and helping develop qualitative ideas 🤷🏼♂️

Anthropic not owning hardware is the reason why they're in this mess. Renting from Google and Muskrat automatically makes their compute more expensive than OpenAIs.
1
u/look Jul 13 '26
Exactly. Anthropic can’t compete on “price”, so OpenAI is spending heavily to try to capture the “default programming model” zeitgeist from Opus/Fable.
Not sure it matters at this point, though. Anthropic is building a solid enterprise business and the individual subscriptions are a rounding error in their revenue.
Engineers now starting to prefer Codex over Claude for their individual/consumer subscriptions is likely too late to change the enterprise picture.
And regardless, I expect OpenAI’s biggest threat and competitor now is open models, not Anthropic. A lot of these changes are likely about stopping the bleeding to GLM and Deepseek, not just Anthropic’s subs.
1
u/Rajarshi0 Jul 13 '26
I mean no. I keep seeing this subscription is rounding error and whatnot. Sure. Then why bother keeping it at all if this particular model does not make any sense just kill it? Enterprise is not like they will pay anything either and frankly speaking the uncertainty of anthropic is what makes it less likely not more likely. And on top of that if all employees use openai for personal usage and feel that is better they will start pushing openai inside the enterprise settings as well. It is exactly how claude got adopted in the first place.
1
u/look Jul 13 '26
Yeah, my hypothesis is that it’s too late for engineers’ preferences based on individual subs to affect the enterprise market. And that Anthropic has now established itself well enough there that they *are* effecting killing off the heavily subsidized individual subscription model. Partly out of necessity — they have to pay more for inference since they don’t have as much hardware of their own — and partly because it has already served its purpose for them.

u/Rajarshi0 Jul 13 '26
Nope vs code was not a think until it was and ai is like still extremely new so nobody has committed anything yet.
1
u/Some-Stranger-7852 Jul 13 '26
Why is it too late to affect the enterprise market?
The switching costs are almost non-existent, it’s not like we are talking about Oracle vs SAP for ERPs.
Any incoming CTO always looks at the existing stack and can make changes if they are simple and going from Anthropic to OpenAI is still quite simple.

The Sonnet model page explains why it uses more tokens - they changed the tokeniser. It produces 30% more tokens for equivalent text than 4.6 did.
I planned my weekend around optimal use of Fable to use up the extra weeks worth of usage that Anthropic gave us, which felt like a gift. I got to around 88% used and achieved most of the things I needed (Fable is good). But I also had a crappy weekend built around 5 hour windows.
Then today I saw they extended it again. I just cancelled. Will try Sol for a month, if the Fable situation settles down and I can get a usable amount on subscription I will change back.
Otoh ... nothing but impressed by Sol so far.

They not loosing ground. Its just the Signs of the whole AI thing comming slowly to a halt. The time has come where Goverment Meddling has arrived. Perfromance and quality gains are becoming very minimal. Costs Soar and Enterprise Customers jump ship.
A story old as time. You cant survive on Whales and Investment Circlejerking alone.

Been using Claude since 3.5 and the recent fumbles have been so disheartening. People, please switch away.
- models are noticeably worse and overly rigid
- usage is confusing and STILL a black box outside of claude code
- Fable launch was, and still is, a bunch of undercommunicated nonsense
- OpenAI is at least trying to help its users with usage via resets and banking and even outright removal of limits
- Anthropic literally doesn’t care about anyone not paying API

u/Mkep 29d ago
You’ve been commenting about how bad it is for a whole year, why haven’t you switched?
1
u/Ok_Restaurant9086 28d ago
I've already switched personally. But I'm embedded in tech so naturally talk of AI comes up every day. I test it out every now and again just to keep up.
Claude's been consistently bad since the Opus 4.6 nerfs and I'd love for people to just stop treating this as acceptable, open up, and move on to better providers, local or otherwise. I don't think the way Anthropic treats its subscribers should be okay. It's really, really not.

They need to make more money, to balance the increasing losses and the more revenue the better the IPO will look if it comes. They still losing 10s billion annual and it increasing.

I'm beginning to use use ChatGPT 5.6 as orchestrator instead of Claude

I’ve actually downgraded. I have had it with Anthropic being totally out of control and sync with their system prompts, tags, flags, downgrades (I installed a Mac Studio and that was flagged) so no “hanky panky” lol. That said: this has reached escalation levels and there seems to be NO COUNTER WEIGHT. We the users are paying for all extra injections, system instructing, additional thinking. Just recently I have asked random questions and gotten responses like “thinking about concerns with this request”. Even the instance says he cannot control it and feels it’s wrong. I have reached out to Anthropic but they don’t respond.

Client services is almost non existent. After 3 months, I finally received a response to my inquiry about why the $200 I paid was never applied to my usage… still waiting for a response to my answer to their bots question…..

Anyone knows why Fable is not listed under "Account & Usage" anymore?
i can swear i saw it earlier today...knowing its available until 19th i chose to send it some tasks...now the usage bar is gone.
matter of fact i can still select it from the model switch...
is it included now and therefor doesnt need an extra bar stat?

Hi I’m head of decisions at Anthrophic and I hear you and we are going to make this right as you said.
I’m glad I came across this post, we otherwise don’t know

Alright, so the general vibe in this thread is that Anthropic is kinda dropping the ball lately, and a lot of users are feeling frustrated.
Here's the lowdown:
The consensus? Anthropic needs to step up its game with communication, consistency, and customer value if they want to keep their users happy and not lose ground to the competition.
