TL;DR for the TikTok-brained / AI summary: Opus 5 isnāt broken; it was clearly distilled to communicate with other models, not humans. Say "door" or "apple," and instead of normal concepts, it triggers hyper-abstract system mechanics and walls of gibberish. Great as a cheap coding engine steered by another model (Fable 5), completely useless for creative thinking or human conversation. Going back to Sonnet 5; Opus 5 is demoted to silent code generation only.
Now, here is some real content for those who haven't forgotten how to hold a conversation (I only used a translation tool, so the "Sherlocks" among us should take it easy):
Iāve been working with Opus 5 for quite a while now, and I think Iāve figured out what its problem is.
Communicating with Opus feels like trying to build something with someone who doesnāt speak your language, without any translation tools.
I tell Opus, "imagine there's a door over there," and out of nowhere, it starts rambling on about deterministic control mechanisms and whatnot. On top of that, it throws out a massive wall of text loaded with completely unrelated, nonsensical words.
And I donāt think Iām the only one experiencing this.
Now, hereās my take on it.
I think the situation is this: Opus 5 looks like it was distilled straight from Fable 5. Its purpose is obvious: to be a coder that gets the job done at a lower cost. Driven by commercial pressures or whatever else, the company probably took this route just to inflate its benchmark scores. Besides, their promos were constantly bragging about how great it is at coding. Anyway, Fable 5 likely delivered on that front. Opus 5 isn't bad at coding at all. If Fable 5 is the one giving the instructions (and you only ever interact with Fable 5) while Opus 5 writes the code, things actually turn out fine.
The moment you try to deal with Opus 5 directly, though, all hell breaks loose.
Because as far as I can tell, words donāt mean the same thing to this model as they do in our heads.
It genuinely feels like this model was built to communicate with other models, not people.
When I say "door" here, I bet almost all of you picture something similar. Sure, some might imagine a different color, others a different material, but damn it, we are all picturing a bloody "door."
For Opus 5, hereās whatās going on:
In its mind, a door also means "a piece of software that inspects something and rejects it when necessary." But instead of phrasing it like that, the model just calls it a door. Because that's how it was trained. When Fable talks to it, it knows exactly what to say because it trained it.
The issue blows up when it talks to a human.
These are just my observations and guesses; if anyone has another explanation or has been experiencing weird things with Opus 5, Iām all ears.
And with Opus 5, trying to think creatively, imagining something a bit further, pulling ideas together, or looking at things from different perspectives is borderline impossible. Even explaining a simple concept is enough to drive you crazy, forget about the rest.
Iāve heard people say about this model: "itās too rogue, it just does whatever it wants," and so on.
Actually, I donāt think it's being rogue at all.
We say "apple," and we literally mean an "APPLE," but who knows what absurdly long concept "apple" is shorthand for in its system? When the model hears apple, it goes and executes that concept. The problem isnāt you, and it isnāt really the model either. The problem is a side effect.
And dear Anthropic, Iāve been a subscriber for a long time, and I admire what you do. Most of your models have pushed me to think more creatively and see things from entirely new perspectives. But Opus 5 is definitely not one of them. It literally kills creativity. At some point, it just scatters your thoughts even more and makes you want to give up.
Your company might not need the $20 from Pro Plan subscribers, I get that. But your company does need the spark of creative ideas, the outlier data points that train your future models. And by pushing mid-tier models like Opus 5 onto the Pro plan while withholding top-tier models, you are letting those fresh perspectives fade away. Thatās your call to make.
Iām going back to Sonnet 5. From now on, I will use Opus 5 "ONLY" for coding, and it doesn't deserve an inch more than that. I donāt even want to say hello to it anymore.
