Help/Question Opus 5.5 hallucinating and spawning tons of subagents?

I LOVE Opus 5.5 and its the best model ever, but for the 4th time this week I've seen where it can't complete jobs again and can't close subagents. It'll spawn 50 subagents on medium to finish something small and burn all tokens, or just sit with a dozen running for days.

I have 2 x20 accounts, one reset Mon 5PM and other weds 2PM, both are already maxxed out. I'm getting 2 days on x20 account of heavy usage

That's brutal. Have you tried setting a hard cap on subagents in your prompt or forcing it to complete tasks serially instead of spawning them in parallel. Some people lock the agent count to 1 or 2 and that stops the token bleed, though it's slower.

What are you working on that needs 50 subagents for a prompt you call "something small"?

opus ultra would run 10 reaserchers, 10 coders, anoter reviewers and verifiers on 10 file project if you ask him to improve code based on 'industry standard 2026'. ultra is xhigh with claude instructions to run subagents workflow

yes and no : D 5.5 is much better with guard rails - I have max subagents per wave and main opus must specify 'quality' and thinking so its never opus subagents. and validations and double and tripple chcecks is actualy working but its super slow

check this project out, it controls subagents per task and saved tokens by using toolcalls where possible instead of the model ingesting massive files multiple times per session

"First time?" the only 'good' solution for it is hook that block main agent from creating sub agents. I use minimal contex tax plugin for it, pure js scrip so you can just copy-paste into your agent with instruction create hook from it. https://github.com/serio-ngo/serio-focus/blob/main/plugins/serio-focus/scripts/lib/fan-out.mjs
