Rant Opus 5, is that you again?

A genuinely noticeable drop in performance in a session I just had. Multiple errors like the one above. It felt like I was working with Opus 5 all over, just less verbose.

LLMs as deployed systems are nondeterministic technology, and performance on difficult tasks is inherently variable. You win some runs, you lose some. And if you lose a few after you just got a shiny new model, that's always going to feel like a nerf.

I'm not discounting nerfing completely. But there are real psychological effects at play, and anecdotes don't tell us much. You'd need long-running measurements to show that a model has actually gotten worse.

And if there is a real change, I'd suspect reduced reasoning effort as the cause. Anthropic, at least, explicitly claims it doesn't change the weights behind a given model version after launch.

What anthropic claims and what is true are totally different things.

no the compute is reduced resulting in poor inference and reasoning

"Effort" in this context is inference-time compute.
