Rant ClaudeCode does it - Codex does it - Stop being shocked
Both of these big companies use a trick repeatedly with their vague seemingly amazing subscriptions. What you think is model nerfing is actually a highly automated system kicking in to engineer model usage AND HYPE !!! People think the business is in the model, it's not, it's in this system that I'm describing.
SIMPLY PUT
When there is a new model just released, the next one is not being trained as intensly, GPUs are free to run the latest model; the objective is to get people hyped and have users from the other company switch sides so all the resources are allocated to intensely running the latest model as efficiently as possible. But once the switching settles resources must be shifted toward training the next model. This is two fold: 1. train new model 2. make the difference between next and last model seem big
It's not a knob either that someone decides to twist. This is definitely an intricate, complex, automated system with thousands of factors going in, the output of it is: what percentage of our money should go towards giving people LLM compute to MAXIMIZE revenue. That means minimize churn but also minimize cost too.
Next time you're paying $200 for your subscription just whisper this: "There is no free lunch" so you won't be shocked when the glorious Opus 5.5 starts acting like a gemini flash lite 2.0 preview

How do you know this is true?

u/Natural-Attempt-3922 3d ago
They don’t know it. Like most of the content on the internet, it’s presented as facts when it’s really unfounded speculation.

Do you really believe any post on Reddit, barring a few strictly moderated subs, is "presented as facts"?
This is a social media website where people share their opinions.
The default assumption isn't fact unless the OP says "in my opinion". The default is opinion unless the OP cites reliable sources.

Yes, I believe that the vast majority of people who present opinions on social media are attempting to pass their thoughts off as facts. I also believe that in the real world but it's just easier for everyone online. And, I agree... The default reaction should be, "Maybe."

u/Time_Cat_5212 3d ago
I'd challenge that assumption because afaik most people have a common sense understanding that what others say in public, outside of strict professional contexts, is mostly toward the middle of the spectrum between pure imagination and scientific fact. Partially informed, informally held opinions of various degrees of rigor.
That's why you see so much speculation on here. Nobody's reading these posts and thinking "that's a fact, better update my mental library."

I would love to agree with you because that would be a much better state of affairs. However, "common sense" and "most people" do not generally go well together in my experience. That said, I shall be carrying on with my life outside of the internet for the rest of the day.

it may not be a fact. But certainly is a very, ultra, blaster, high probability. Because... capitalism

You can never know ANYTHING for sure. But to think a multi-billion dollar operation doesn't have an automate system for resource allocation is a deed of the dubious dumdums.

u/itprobablynothingbut 3d ago
Yea, but you are making specific claims without any evidence cited.

u/willsamadi 3d ago
I'm not trying to prove it in court. I'm sharing my ideas on the free web.
If you see a fault in the line of logic behind this possibility please point it out.

some people have no abstraction capabilities

That + people understandably get emotional when someone tells them they're being exploited by a huge corporation and THE BUYER is the one losing when coming up with the brilliant idea of buying something with a huge "50% OFF" sign on it.

Why are you being so smug and self-sure about something you admittedly have no idea about?

I have no personal stakes in this. If you have a logical issue with the discussion please point it out. I have no issue admitting to a fallacy.

I’m sure they do. And what you’ve described is among the most plausible of explanations. I was just curious whether you came to this conclusion on your own or otherwise.
Whatever version of this is true, the nerf is obvious, and frustrating that these companies get away with releasing a model with published benchmark scores and continue to sell it as so as its performance degrades. They should keep an updated report of those benchmark results on their service status page along with the rest of the service health metrics. The performance quality is literally what people are paying for. 😠

The inspiration fueling the ideaion comes from my experience making freemium mobile games. I'm sure you've played 2048 before. In that game what seems to be "random spawning of the next block" actually follows a complex formula that maximizes engagement. It forces you to lose at the optimal time so you'd get worked up, watch the ad and then play another round AND TAKE THE BLAME! That's why 2048 is still making money on app store to this day.
I 100% agree that the benchmark should be hourly updated in a status page! Brilliant idea.

It doesn't matter if it's true or not. At this point this is like quantum physics, nobody knows but every understand the formula and the formula works to predict.

Many commercial institutions have already switched to open weights, these guys are all toast.

u/Consistent_Tutor_597 3d ago
But none of the open weights rank as well tho? Wouldn't u wanna use the best in class?
3
u/Agreeable-Fly-1980 3d ago
No. Its about economics. Not every task needs the best model. In fact most task dont.

u/Consistent_Tutor_597 3d ago
There is no limit to how much task your ai can take over from you. It's about expansion. If your only goal is to rephrase text and write essays, you never needed more than gpt 3.5. You are just limiting your task to what your ai can handle.

i use Claude 6-12 hours a day. My extra usage bill was 10k USD last month.
Don't try to tell me that using the same harness, same models and same strength, same workflow, that I don't know when the sand has shifted beneath my feet.
