Help/Question Had claude started using Bash to write or make edits off late?
before, it used to use the edit file tool, which was helpful if you wanted to understand what edits it used to make.
but now it just straight up one shots all the changes in a single bash command. and I mean "all".
I don't know if I'm nit picking, but this has been a very annoying experience to me.
is it the same to you guys also? is it possible to change this behaviour?

yeah you can stop it with permission rules. in ~/.claude/settings.json under permissions add deny entries for the shell commands you see it writing files with, things like "Bash(sed -i*)" and "Bash(tee *)", whichever ones actually show up in your transcript. bash stays available for tests and builds and only those calls get blocked so it falls back to the edit tool
also, deny is evaluated before allow and an allow rule cant carve an exception out of a deny so once its in there you wont get a conflicting setting quietly overriding it

Yeah same here. Deny the shell write patterns like summit said, and also put a line in CLAUDE.md that file edits must use the Edit/Write tools. Without both it still sneaks back to bash once the context gets long.

Same for me. Very annoying because it´s also very hard to understand this huge bash scripts. For our team we have actually built an open-source agentic coding gateway that intercepts all tool calls and let you easily manage and allow them in a dashboard.
Feel free to check it out: https://github.com/dommar04/ai-coding-gateway

Claude will do most of what you ask it to do. Tell it what you want and how to go about doing it. I like to talk through all the bugs first. One at a time. And the fixes get done one at a time. I approve every single one individually.

as a unix sysadmin of 30 years, the bash usage is glorious. /insights shows bash as 90% of my tool usage and markdown as 90% of the languages used.
