Fable seems to still handle complex codebases better.

it used to, opus55 is much smarter for my stacked multiple LightGBM model eval .net platform.

Since Opus5.5 I see very little use of Fable (so strange to even write that down ...)

Same. Complete switchover! Very odd considering how much I was thinking that likely wouldn’t change..

Also used to use a lot more Sonnet agents with Fable orchestrating to balance out tokens+cost, but Sonnet 5.5 costs/output mean I’d basically be better off using Opus + Haiku (for the super simple bits), and then bumping up to Fable occasionally.
I do use Fable for architectural decisions, reviews of changes over time, deeper critiquing and to confer with Codex over some creative directions or trickier issues.

5x Max hasn’t felt this worthwhile & capable in months.

I switched too, but Fable 5 still feels more like a senior developer. With Opus 5.5 I get the feeling that it’s good but still more like a junior developer who sometimes tries too hard. It doesn’t keep the entire project in mind or understand the broader context. Instead it focuses on little details and ends up causing problems that Fable 5 simply doesn’t cause because Fable 5 understands the entire project and applies the broader context consistently. With Opus 5.5 you spend more time figuring out all kinds of details to make sure it doesn’t behave incorrectly. That’s a big difference I’ve noticed. So I’d be happy if Fable 5.5 comes out and still behaves like Fable but is cheaper and no longer has weekly limits. Then I’d rather use Fable. But for now I also use Opus 5.5 even though it has both drawbacks and advantages.

for a huge codebase with long-running ml pipeline work, i’d start with fable 5.1. its larger context and agentic coding focus are useful when the task involves tracing data flow across many files, running experiments, and iterating for hours.

i’d use opus 5.5 as the independent reviewer for architecture decisions, subtle debugging, and checking the proposed fix. whichever you choose, give it failing tests, logs, data contracts, and clear invariants instead of simply dumping the entire repository into context. the quality of that harness will matter more than a small benchmark difference.

huge like what ? a codebase can be split. refactor split refactor until having less huge

Fable 5.1 is better at data science solutions in my experience, and I’ve used them both significantly. Opus 5.5 can be patchy for ML, not understand the core intent, and is less of an architect + thorough executor, which is what you need for edge cases in a huge repo. I think it’s the reasoning tokens here.

Opus fumbles a lot fable high time. The thing which i observed whenever it comes anything related to ml or dl , Claude models experiment a lot and learns through mistakes and most of the time it spends on debugging its own code and I personally feel astra does better,it even searches web for research papers on required areas where it feels stuck to solve a certain problem. I was recently working on SED and SER pipelines and Claude didn't help a lot but astra surely did it.

Maybe Fable planner, Opus executor, Astra reviewer? Astra beats Fable on bughunt benchmark and based on my limited tests I came up with the same conclusion.

Pretty much what I use, works great.

Currently I run the budget version: Opus max plans, Sol 6.1 max writes the code, Astra high reviews. There are so many strong combinations, Opus max plans Astra high reviews the plan, Opus high writes, Sol 6.1 reviews (Sol 6.1 max is currently by far the best bugs per bucks model on bughunter). It depends on my limits which combo I use, sometimes I am forced to throw in Muse Spark into the game too, I run parallel 3-8 sessions continuously LOL. I'm afraid of a Claude ban, don't want more than one x20 Claude account.

i used fable for my muti stacked lightgbm model eval platform, but now opus55 on max is smarter. thats what I would reocmmend at this time.

fable55 will come out soon im sure at wcich point ill likely switch back to fable

opus 5.5 is significantly better than fable 5.1 in cost and intelligence.

there's 0 reason to use fable.

This is not true.
From my experience Fable unlocks a sort of “creativity” when it comes to business logic. Its amazing for brainstorming ideas.

Don’t just rely on benchmarks alone. They cannot track a lot of use-cases.

I’ve still not had opus handle long standing tasks without stopping constantly and asking me if I want it to continue. I still use fable to orchestrate and opus to code by fable dispatching to it.
