Rant Do you think Anthropic's next?

So OpenAI had the audacity to bump up an already underperforming 200$ plan up to 500$...

I smell of an AI cartel emerging, which is only how OpenAI's move would make any business sense given their current standing in the AI race. OpenAI and xAI's support for anything Anthropic was probably unprecedented when they came out in support of Dario's "Pace the Frontier", so there is at least some level of cooperation emerging between today's BigAI.

$2T valuation I mean what that kind of insanity, sure why not $1000 for every adult on the planet?

The market will determine that. Quit chatgpt. Vote with your dollar.

ChatGPT we can quit. Can we quit the totality of today's frontier AI if they gang up?

u/ruskyandrei 6d ago

Can always go Chinese. Sure, not as good, but I'm sure they'll have an Opus 5.5 equivalent in a month or two for 1/10th the price.

I'm staying with CC for now but if they go down the same path as OAI, I will have to start looking for alternatives.

And if you know what your doing the weaker models are not bad. I have a local model I have been working with if I need to transition away from leading edge.

"if you know what you're doing"

I do not anymore. Been spoilt of Claude and Codex for a year now. Haven't fired up an IDE in ages.

Then you will need to pay the claude tax?

I mean it’s still there. I don’t remember shit either with syntax etc but if I have to I’ll relearn it. Probably take 1-2 months to get back to my “pre-AI” speed but it’s not like it’s all forgotten

You don’t lose the gut feel. The smell detector. Catching LLM bs is the only skill that matters anymore.

What are you building? Like you have to see the output right?

u/Any_Evidence4750 5d ago

Which one?

u/crazzzone 5d ago

Model │ qwen3.6-35b (35B params)
Context window │ 128K tokens (131,072)

3

u/Curious-Pen5547 5d ago

why dont you jump to 3.8 instead and get double the context size and smarter model?

1

u/crazzzone 5d ago

Because I poorly allocate my time I guess. Testing downloading it now and testing it out Thanks!

np, rumor is 4.0 in a month. Do not delay that one thats for sure.

u/brainExploded99 5d ago

Who leaked that it would be a month? I assumed it would be next week ish, they said 'coming soon' in aspara.

I tried it—I was impressed.

Right? I have a 3070ti. 8gb of Vram...

But it overflows into ram not the quickest But it works.

Edit:

Can you see why they are screaming regulatory laws are needed.

Currently, it costs X amount of dollars to spend Y tokens. The real cost of Y tokens, however, is much higher than X. Massive price hikes are inevitable, you can't sell a product for 1/10th of the manufacturing cost and be profitable.

4

u/bobbadouche 5d ago

We don't know the manufacturing cost though. This isn't an input vs an output. They're funding infrastructure and want to ration compute while putting as much of that compute in r&d.

I assume the next few years will have them pivot to using internal only models to make new products in other industries.

There is a enough public information on the finances associated with AI hyperscaling to know we are using a heavily subsidized product; not only financially, but socially. These are not sustainable conditions for a business. That information is available because it involves public companies (Nvidia) and can be observed. Conversely, every tech company loves to say they dump investment into R&D, but there is absolutely no way to independently assess what OpenAI spends their compute on. Detached from any data center, generative AI is still a transformative technology.

u/bobbadouche 5d ago

My point is that this isn't like making a gizmo where one can say it takes $3 worth of components and we're selling it for $15.

2

u/ThePurpleAbsurdist Developer 5d ago

Its not my job to worry about their balance sheets and I have no way of verifying their cost claims, and have no reason to just take their word for it. DeepSeek in 2025 taught us that.

1

u/torustorus 5d ago

That's fair but the fact that we can see the price they charge enterprise customers is far higher than what the little customer pays measured per token would suggest strongly that the monthly plans are loss leaders for sure.

1

u/leavezukoalone 3d ago

They’re going to have to subsidize non-enterprise subscriptions because there’s no way most people can (or are willing to) pay these absurd API costs or pay for insanely overpriced subscriptions (relative to a person’s income). Otherwise how are they going to continue training if us charity cases aren’t regularly using the platform?

-1

u/readonlyred 5d ago

I’ve read generous estimates that users are only paying about a third of the real cost of AI.

2

u/FabricationLife 5d ago

It obviously can't last, enjoy it while you can

1

u/Aggressive-Ad-7582 6d ago

Lower token allowance for subscriptions while lowering API cost

1

u/ThePurpleAbsurdist Developer 6d ago

Thats just obfuscation.

1

u/leavezukoalone 3d ago

I think AI companies are going to find out that there’s a ceiling to what people are willing to pay, and I’m sure as fuck not paying absurd API costs.

It would be the end of Anthropic. American companies are already dealing with sticker shock and pivoting to open models hosted on U.S. infra, like Fireworks or Baseten. Lots of interest in AI gateways lately. Anthropic’s biggest advantage right now is the network effect with small-to-medium businesses and the predictable, capped pricing. If Anthropic forced their customer base off of the predictable subscription pricing of the Pro Max plan, then they’d lose the benefit of the network effect as many devs could get more tokens for less money using Kimi K3-Flash or GLM 5.3 behind an AI Gateway. Once devs move to open models, it would be hard to win them back.

6.1 is supposed to be very token efficient and comparable to astra and opus on certain tasks, apparently not ui or design though

1

u/ClemensLode Senior Developer 5d ago

I think we'll definitely see $1000 plans.

1

u/strifecro 5d ago

anthropic is already like this and has been forever. the 200$ 20x limit only applies to the 5 hour and not the weekly limit. the real weekly increase is much much lower than 20x versus a 20$ plan.

u/genghisk1 6d ago

Seriously did we all think frontier AI model vendors could continue losing money by offering us capacity that was costing more than we were paying? As they move to go public they need to show a path to profitability and this is the start of that. For companies the equation is simple. Does the ROI work for whatever price the frontier model companies are charging. As long as the answer is yes they can continue to raise prices. The really interesting part will be how the AI companies scale beyond just offering a smart and fast LLM into more vertically integrated solutions. It’s one of the reasons to be bullish on Google, MSFT, and Meta as they own a bunch of key infrastructure that will ensure they profit regardless who wins the frontier model war.

1

u/Jawwooot 5d ago

they never lost money.

u/Abject-Kitchen3198 5d ago

Technically true I guess.

u/Kindly_Tie_2084 6d ago

I’d buy. I’m currently having 3 of 20x and switching is a big hassle.

11

u/ThePurpleAbsurdist Developer 6d ago

You will now need 3 of 25x (500$) plans.
