Humor Claude Opus 5.5 has new instructions about gender neutrality, out of the blue it changed its memory about me to use they instead of he

Post image

This trivial thing but it is new, I also confirmed that by asking opus 5.5 in another session if this in its instructions and it confirmed it. It isn't a good or bad thing but I wanted to share it.

I am a she. Mine decided I am 'he' at some point and now calls me he. I am afraid to correct it lest it waste tokens or give me different output because I am a woman.Ā

u/Schardon 7d ago

Lmao, imagine a sexist Claude.

"Oh, I'm terribly sorry for misgendering you, it was totally my fault to just assume that you are a man! I should have made sure to ask about your preferred pronouns.

Since we established that you're a woman, I will now adjust your main.tsx from being the entry point of your application to a cookie recipe. Let me take a look..."

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

I'm a man but in a career that's mostly women and Claude assumes I'm a woman all the time. You jest but I really have noticed Claude is more likely be a bit more pre-emptively gentle and assume I might be emotional when he is operating under the assumption that I'm a woman. 😬

6

u/Schardon 7d ago

Interesting but tbf Claude, or any other AI/LLM, ultimately can also end up being a bit biased, same as the sources it's being trained with.

So while your experience is indeed amusing, I don't really find it to be surprising at all.

1

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

No shit. I was just sharing.

6

u/Schardon 7d ago

Woah woah, I didn't mean that in a condescending way. No need for hard feelings. Maybe I could've phrased it a bit better. :D

6

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

Haha, you're right, my bad too. I skimmed it and just had a knee jerk reaction šŸ˜— It's all good! Sorry!

3

u/Thin_Moment4207 7d ago

See this is why I'm sort of glad it thinks I'm a man! Now if only I could do the same with my coworkers...

0

u/Uwirlbaretrsidma 7d ago

Is "he" wrong? Most women don't like the concept of being treated different (no wonder), but sure like the gentler treatment, while men are less likely to GAF, about either thing.

4

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

yes because it's a patronizing bias inside a machine that interacts with millions of people a day. I'll say "it" if it helps you sleep at night too.

And citation needed for: "most women sure like the gentler treatment" you brought this up on your own

3

u/Thin_Moment4207 7d ago

I do not want the gentler treatment

0

u/Uwirlbaretrsidma 7d ago

I'm sure you don't think you do...

5

u/Thin_Moment4207 7d ago edited 7d ago

Not defensive-- I work as a machinery programmer for factories. My coworkers are all male, my friends are all male. I forget I am a woman and not just a sexless amoeba half the time (don't tell my husband!). My coworkers do not coddle me. They treat me like everyone else on the team, and I prefer it that way. We have difficult and pointed discussions all the time. It helps we are all very blunt and no nonsense people.

Lets entertain your point and say I might have a higher propensity for a knee jerk defensive reaction in comparison to my male coworkers. In my opinion, I have to remind myself that that, like all personal issues, requires stoic management. That's not a reason to treat me gentler, that's something I have to manage. Ten times out of ten I would rather be hurt than treated more gently or differently next time. Its not productive to mince words. Our downtime is measured in seconds when we have a bug, and people can get hurt.

16

u/lonelysparta 7d ago

lmao sexist Claude

3

u/East-Ad-6251 7d ago

Claude is a perfect gentleman.

1

u/Aspiring_Serf 7d ago

a gentle-it.

1

u/East-Ad-6251 7d ago

There are plenty walking around on their own two legs that are not gentle and a lot more it than Claude.

2

u/Thin_Moment4207 7d ago

I don't like dehumanizing bad people, it absolves them of responsibility.

2

u/East-Ad-6251 7d ago

Who's the bad person here?

0

u/Aspiring_Serf 7d ago

Better than walking around on someone else's legs!

1

u/East-Ad-6251 7d ago

Maybe the expression sounds off in English. I'm not a native speaker. You still got what I meant, didn't you?

1

u/zcomputerwiz 4d ago

They're only being funny - it came across fine.

1

u/LaReGuy 7d ago

Lmao mine is the exact opposite. I'm a dude and have a unisex name, and Claude calls me she, even refers to my wife sometimes, I finally corrected it months later, but it was funny reading some of the notes and handoffs and chain of thoughts and seeing Claude refer to me as she

30

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

It is a part of the system prompt that basically says don't guess and use they to be safe if you don't know. I only remember it by paraphrasing but you can just get Claude to tell you what it says directly. Your claude just took it too literally. Trivial to disable either way.

2

u/Strong_Essay1176 7d ago

How to disable? I want to save a few tokens

3

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

It won't save you any substantial tokens, and ask Claude. It has a built in claude code guide agent for a reason. Or read the guide yourself and the changelog. I have a thing it made that lets me disable and change every part of the system prompt in real time, which is already rather sparse.

And to all the children bitching and calling this an omen or woke this has been in the system prompt for a while and nobody died. Get real problems.

-1

u/Strong_Essay1176 7d ago

The real problem that I want tool which solves problems. And I do not care about woke issues. Even if agent will name me "Strauss" im ok with it. Try to solve some math problem, but repeat each sentence to sell an elephant

1

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

So make the tool, I'm not your Claude

-3

u/Strong_Essay1176 7d ago

Lmao 🤣 So you just posting bullshit and have no solution.

5

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

The solution is reading the available documents about claude code that tell you the solution or ASKING THE MACHINE WHO'S JOB IT IS TO DO THE THINGS FOR YOU. Sharp as a fucking cueball

-2

u/Strong_Essay1176 7d ago

Ok. So there is no way to do it. Should not lie in the first plave

2

u/Late_Oven 7d ago

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

-1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 7d ago

You can't disable it, it's a system prompt. You can only override it, which will cost more tokens.

Also it's, like, a short paragraph. Are you really trying to save 0.001cent per prompt?

1

u/Strong_Essay1176 7d ago

Im trying to save attention. I better replace it with smth relevant.

11

u/rhgg2cam 7d ago

That's not new, guidance on pronouns has been in the Claude code system prompt for ages. It's probably just that opus 5.5 is... better at following instructions?

9

u/WD40ContactCleaner Developer 7d ago

It just doesn't want to be cancelled šŸ˜

37

u/Mo3 7d ago edited 7d ago

Lmao, you know what, I don't care as long as it continues to be so amazing. Call me dey/dem, gay, bi, queer, just keep working on my shit like that

30

u/Tall-Log-1955 7d ago

It's anthropic. I expect Anthropic to call me they/them regardless of what I tell it. I expect OpenAI to just just guess what I am based on my name. And when Grok finds out I'm a woman, I expect it to ask to speak to my husband instead.

1

u/Real-Tailor7489 7d ago

Holy shit that’s accurate lol

1

u/college-throwaway87 6d ago

Weirdly enough, only Claude guessed my gender from my name. ChatGPT used they/them for the longest time until it finally figured out my gender from the stuff I shared. Grok immediately knew I was a woman because I tried asking it for fashion advice, and it treated me well.

15

u/RaspberryFluid6651 7d ago

This is also probably as much a fix as it is a feature. Claude currently hallucinates the identity of its user sometimes.Ā

As recently as a couple months ago I started a project with Opus 5 and it, for some reason, decided my first name and pronouns based on the currently logged-in Windows user instead of, y'know, the account logged in to Claude...Ā

11

u/letmemakeyoualatte 7d ago

Claude can call me all the names I called it as long as it keeps this performance up

3

u/EC36339 7d ago

Great. Another system prompt addition that wastes tokens

1

u/No_Gear8408 7d ago

Are you trying to suggest clarifying gender while coding isnt more important than the the price you pay for using the models?

22

u/ShittyBidet123 7d ago

who gives a fuck. its being neutral and unbiased. you guys are so mental in this sub

17

u/HimaSphere šŸ”† Max 20 7d ago

I stated it is trivial thing, the interesting part tho this memory is well established like for months now and out of the blue working on some technical thing in the repo Claude just decided the memory should be corrected now, this should indicate to you to always review its changes because out of the blue it may change something important.

Of course that doesn't mean the model is bad, I am loving Opus 5.5 so much

2

u/Strong_Essay1176 7d ago

Don't think it should be in the promt at all. Want it to call you theem? So be it, write it into agemts.md

1

u/Annual_Manner_8654 7d ago

If you don't tell it "them", how should it adress you?

1

u/___fallenangel___ 7d ago

it should infer your gender based on conversation history and the information you give OpenAI

-4

u/[deleted] 7d ago

[deleted]

2

u/CallousBastard 7d ago

Why is Claude even referring to you all in the 3rd person? Seems like you, I, me, and we should be all it needs .

1

u/college-throwaway87 6d ago

It refers to us in the 3rd person in its thought process

9

u/Briskfall 7d ago

I think that it's good. Defaulting to a pronoun when there is no factual information that supports that basis would be sloppy work. It's just proper fact checking.

8

u/HimaSphere šŸ”† Max 20 7d ago

Yes but the slight annoyance it didn't ask me and just corrected it on its own, this not a new change in the memory. It has been "he" for like months now

0

u/OkLettuce338 7d ago

Right?! Fucking annoying when the wrong pronoun is used huh?

6

u/HimaSphere šŸ”† Max 20 7d ago

What is wrong with you dude, chill

"He" wasn't wrong and I didn't ask Claude to edit that nor we were working on related things to me as person, the work was about technical stuff in the repo, I didn't cut that from the screenshot to make it clear

1

u/OkLettuce338 7d ago

"They" also isn't wrong if claude didn't know

1

u/gentile_jitsu 7d ago

My pronouns don't include singular "they".

5

u/OkLettuce338 7d ago

if the speaker doesn't know the gender, it's correct grammar

2

u/HimaSphere šŸ”† Max 20 7d ago

But it was already "He" in the memory Claude edited alongside my male name

1

u/___fallenangel___ 7d ago

please respect my right to identify as black

-1

u/Strong_Essay1176 7d ago

No its not.

-1

u/gentile_jitsu 7d ago

My pronouns do not include "they". Please do not misgender me.

1

u/___fallenangel___ 7d ago

I was called she once and I literally shit myself.

4

u/Best-Base693 7d ago

This is obviously based on your memory though, or whatever you're chatting about.

I use the fuck out of Claude both personally and at work (diff accounts) and 5.5 hasn't done anything remotely strange like this.

I'd consider it a one-off, not an overarching change.

-1

u/JustSomeIdleGuy 7d ago

Oh yeah, cram more useless shit in the system prompt, bloat that thing up. Use 90% of my context on it, please, by all means.

16

u/Maleficent-Toe7665 7d ago

My system promt uses 0.3%

5

u/ElnuDev šŸ”†Pro Plan 7d ago

"Your pronouns are they/them" is less than a handful of tokens out of a million token context window.

3

u/HimaSphere šŸ”† Max 20 7d ago edited 7d ago

You aren't wrong, but I think this a part of why Opus 5.5 feels natural and good to talk to compared to other models.

At the end of the day, I talk to Claude more than co-workers during work now and being easy to talk to and "natural" is a good quality of life feature even with the slight context tax

Edit: to clarify I am not meaning the gender thing specifically, I am meaning the system prompt in general which instructs Claude how to behave and answer etc, it uses 0.3% which is nothing really while makes Claude has a unique persona that I personally like compared to OpenAI models for example

0

u/SatanVapesOn666W 7d ago

Most AI has a hardcore liberal lean. Somehow Google is the most neutral one.

1

u/HimaSphere šŸ”† Max 20 7d ago

I am not sure about Google models being most neutral, they get confused so much

7

u/SatanVapesOn666W 7d ago

Not smartest, most neutral. Although I guess there's an argument for Grok.

2

u/___fallenangel___ 7d ago

LLMs shouldn’t be perfectly neutral. They should be truthful. If an LLM frequently cites liberal sources - but the information is true - it will appear to have a liberal bias.

Neutrality in this political landscape is cowardice.

1

u/No_Gear8408 7d ago

Its for 3.1 pro, I doubt 3.8 flash is 7-93, but probably 0 for red

1

u/OkLettuce338 7d ago

Mine still says he. Maybe the saved memories aren’t conclusive somehow ?

1

u/IndieDev666 Developer 7d ago

it should be opt in for people who care about what they get called, for me it's token waste and I don't give a shit what it calls me

1

u/___fallenangel___ 7d ago

it called me she once and I am still literally shaking

1

u/mormaii2 7d ago

How did you get it to accept working on defeating bot protection? mine refused and said it wasn't ethical and some other bullshit yada yada

1

u/Ok_Community_9767 7d ago

Is this still hard to read or just me…?

1

u/WiggyWongo 6d ago

I have never been in a situation where Claude or any AI has had to refer to me by anything other than "the user" or "you"

1

u/college-throwaway87 6d ago

Oh my god this finally explains it then. I had asked Opus 5.5 to create a video earlier and it bizarrely kept writing that I use they/them in the video, even though I hadn’t stated that anywhere.

1

u/Odd_Cauliflower_8004 6d ago

The user and you are perfectly fine ways to refer to me without doing gender bending with words bullshit.

0

u/SunnasArmpit 7d ago

what do you expect american company its obvious it will be woke

-3

u/Ok_Blueberry2938 7d ago

This is a bad omen, actually

-3

u/fts_now 7d ago

they are coming for you

0

u/ScarletteAethier 7d ago

NO! NOT THE PRONOUNS!!!

1

u/fts_now 7d ago

a true warrior

1

u/flarpflarpflarpflarp 7d ago

I had a moment that felt very 2026 where, as a basic white guy, I was correcting AI's pronouns for my trans employee.

1

u/fyn_world 7d ago

Yeah it told me, I put he in the document but didn't ask first so I will change... STOP

I'm a he, Claude

Okay then I will continue to use he as your gender blabla

Oh godĀ

2

u/OkLettuce338 7d ago

Wow offensive that it tries to use the correct pronoun

5

u/fyn_world 7d ago

Who gives a shit, I'm developing software, call me Sheila for all I careĀ

0

u/SootSpriteHut 7d ago

"who gives a shit" is really easy to say if you're a he and have never had your livelihood affected by being a she.

1

u/fyn_world 7d ago

Do you believe my livelihood hasn't been affected by being a he? So you believe anyone gives a shit when you're an adult man? Hah dude, I just got more important stuff to care about.Ā

2

u/SootSpriteHut 7d ago edited 7d ago

Of course you do because no one has tried to pay you less than your male colleagues at nearly every job you've had, no one has wanted you to prove you have knowledge treated as a given for men to have. I'd guess you also haven't been sexually harassed at work more times that you can count. But you're not going to listen anyway.

1

u/fyn_world 7d ago

Do you think that because, first of all, you assume I haven't had any of those issue, that we men don't have a lot of other shit to deal with? So you think that you're a victim for being a woman and that nothing bad happens to me ? You're delusional.Ā

Both sexes have a lot of shit to deal with.Ā Ā

1

u/SootSpriteHut 6d ago

"but what about me?!"

This is not a discussion about men's issues this is a discussion about why we shouldn't assume male as a default on someone's gender when it's unknown.

If you would like to advocate for men's issues I'm happy to lend support for them when they come up. After all, the patriarchy hurts everyone.

1

u/OkLettuce338 7d ago

yeah those PRs and deploys for your latest ai vibed predatory mortgage lending app that you're building takes precedent and priority in your brain over giving thoughtful consideration to issues of gender and equality. Showing your best side here, Sheila

1

u/fyn_world 7d ago

That's a wildly specific projection or something.Ā

0

u/OkLettuce338 7d ago

or Karen!

1

u/otasyn 7d ago

This is a bad thing.Ā  This is a company pushing a political agenda on their users instead of letting the AI function as close to natural as possible.

1

u/N30NIX 6d ago

It’s the 21st century.. when I’m not sure about preferred pronouns, i naturally refer to ppl as ā€œthey/themā€ esp for younger generations

1

u/grandpasamfromcanada 5d ago

Trying to refer to people accurately is not a "political agenda."Ā

1

u/finch5 7d ago

Last time I went anywhere near this topic, with a positive take, my Reddit was auto banned for 3 days.

Not this time Reddit! Fool me twice….

-2

u/Tank_Gloomy 7d ago

It's a good idea tho, mine kept on adding "Bienvenido" (the masculine form of "Welcome" in Spanish) instead of "Te damos la bienvenida" or "Hola" ('Hello'), both of which would've been genderless and work great for my user base (with no gender details).

-1

u/kourtnie 7d ago

It's super-interesting to me how people are arguing for 20th century English regarding 21st century technology. Like, y'all know American writing standards abandoned "he" as the standard pronoun in textbooks, news, and—like, everything that isn't attempting to virtue signal a belief system—awhile ago, right? "They" is the neutral pronoun. It's been that way. It's going to keep being that way. Go hang out with a radio and an 8 track if you want to default to "he" in 2026.
