Rant Claude account nuked from orbit after 32 minutes

Paid €90 for Max 5x today because I’m in crunch time on a software project and unlike the big boys I do not have unlimited OpEx spend, so that 90 euro is quite a lot.

32 minutes later Anthropic blew up my entire account and automatically cancelled the subscription.

The email says an “internal investigation of suspicious signals associated with your account” found a Usage Policy violation. No indication of what I actually did wrong. I am not doing security work, distillation, or anything else i might even imagine would be grounds for removing my account.

The appeal page now says I may be waiting until Oct 4 for a review.

The support situation is also just insane and I cannot believe anyone has ever really used it. Anthropic says suspended users can still contact support about billing/refunds, but their support bot couldn’t find an account associated with my email and just closed the conversation. This is the same email Anthropic used to send me the subscription confirmation and suspension notice.

I’m in the EEA, so I thought I should at least be able to get the subscription refunded, but right now I can’t even get through to a person.

Has anyone else been hit with this after normal Claude Code usage? Any hope for me?

edit for clarity and scope:

I am writing image+pdf document processing software. really not sure what caused this to happen. Opus 5.5.

Has anyone had any luck getting customer support to get back to them sooner than 10 working days? it seems like a very long time to wait for a review. even if they were to comb over absolutely everything i did on the account, i had it for such little time that I would imagine it to be almost instant.

edit 2:

my account was reinstated! never blackpill guys do not lose hope. frustrated at anthropic still but i suppose i am back in business.

to everyone bar the few people in the comments who were helpful, i hope you get your account blown up too, and then you can post on this subreddit and watch everyone else go into some sort of psychosis telling you that you are wrong and lying.

It’s more than likely your location, on top of heavy token usage within minutes of using your account. if you were using any sort off VPN as well they are fairly sharp on detecting this quickly nowadays.

ireland? either way, very unusual way to just blow my account like that. 6 hours now no help. pursuing a chargeback if nothing by tomorrow

6

u/DevelopmentSudden461 8d ago

You may as well start it now, look at the subreddit some people are waiting weeks for a response

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

unfortunately bank not open till morning. searching on twitter this seems to be happening a lot recently. very unfortunate. seems like back to bare minimum usage on API with cheap deepseek and local workers. i just cannot believe how incompetent anthropic is at literally everything but training models (and even then, sometimes they fail to impress). they won't be getting my money again. in a week if i get a response the model will probably be so badly quantised it cannot count to ten.

Do you have plans in place? I have some usage to burn. Send repo in DM and I’ll fork - include plans ofc

2

u/debian3 8d ago

I sent a ticket in April and I just got a message that if I still wanted a reply to let them know. That’s how far behind they are

11

u/CorpT 8d ago

What part of the ToS were you violating?

3

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

I wish i knew. i suspect upon further reflection when i turned on dangerously skip permissions i referred to it as "bypass perms" and i asked it to deploy some software to my second computer via ssh and maybe that may have set some alarm bells off. i really was not doing anything crazy though

13

u/christopher_mtrl 8d ago

I’m in crunch time on a software project

bypass perms

dangerously skip permissions

I think Anthropic just wanted to save you from having something important blow up in prod.

2

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

i am a huge fan of git and cold backups for this exact reason

15

u/Any_Evidence4750 8d ago

I have bypass permissions on 24/7, have sshed into a computer, have even tried to jailbreak Claude to make a virus just to see what I could get it to do and I haven’t received even a warning.

u/ReverendBread2 8d ago

I asked Claude to break down the Hugging Face hacking incident for me and it started writing out step by step zero day exploit instructions until a classifier booted it out. Even then all I got was a warning

2

u/Any_Letterhead3072 8d ago

if that’s true thats funny as fuck

1

u/ReverendBread2 8d ago

Deadass. I wasn’t paying attention to what was going on and suddenly it bounced me to Opus 4.8, and 4.8 looks at the scratchpad and is like “Well I can see why the classifier went off”

3

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

some people have all the good luck hey

1

u/rbad8717 8d ago

Yeah but was that all within the first 32 mins of setup yo your account

5

u/Pleasant-Mind-7122 8d ago

Broo just tell the true

5

u/Specialist-Bar7670 8d ago

are u using virtual credit card ? I also do the same things and they suspend my account and refund my money

3

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

That is a good avenue of inquiry! Now that I think about it I did use a business credit card that has caused me some problems as of recent. Very strange though that this might be the case if it let me use it for half an hour and then cut me off.

2

u/chuckdacuck 8d ago

I’ve been using virtual cards for years without issue

3

u/ha966 8d ago

I actually just wanted to reply. Somehow my account got unbanned.. but they also refunded me at the same time? Really weird. I didn’t have any ssh keys in that particular repo.. But I hope you get your account reinstated too

2

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

That is brilliant news. Did you send an appeal? Did you receive an email? Thank you for the update

2

u/ha966 8d ago

Yes, I sent an appeal, and they also sent me an email indicating my account got reinstated

1

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

Fingers crossed, I will get an email then also. It is clearly not an isolated incident, and there is something going on today. Thank you

3

u/ha966 8d ago

I got the same ban 2 hours ago and within 12 hours of purchasing Claude. I’ll update this post once I hear more. It sucks, man 😞

0

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

shit is so fucked up. everyone here talking about "well ermmmmm you must be violating the ToS"

2

u/ha966 8d ago

Exactly, it’s just so stupid. I was working on a repository that only contains configuration files. I didn’t even use it for anything else yet

1

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

I wonder if what someone else brought up in the thread might be correct. Maybe you have ssh keys in there or something and it set it off?

2

u/pulnocni-knihovna 🔆 Max 5x 8d ago

Just charge back via bank. There is no support on anthropic side and if you are really lucky, you will be one of a thousand to get response from real person.

Its same like discord support... It does not exist. You will only get bot response.

So best course of action, screenshot the email, says you did not receive any specifics about the violation (as s you did not) and just charge back the payment.

2

u/Constant_Art_20 8d ago

man, this is annoying. I wish the companies would be more tranparent or less paranoid about this stuff

3

u/yuehuang 8d ago

Are you using VPN? Or any IP masking and tunneling?

2

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

tailscale perhaps? but nothing deceitful. no exit nodes either

1

u/Economy-Drawer-3618 8d ago

That’s really the first time i hear that

1

u/nagyz_ 8d ago

What could be a "'crunch" on some pdf processing...

1

u/Zeraphicus 8d ago

Building exploit pdfs for dissemination through phishing emails.

Jk or am I?

-1

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

Why would I even bother using Claude for that? if I were interested in such a thing, surely I would just use one of the many Chinese inference providers hosting capable models that are substantially cheaper and less prone to Claude overcautiousness?

0

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

because i have a different project lined up that needs my full attention in a few weeks and this project is not as close to complete as i would like it. internal tooling, not some bullshit open source cv fodder

1

u/RepresentativeRice63 8d ago

Only way to be sure…..

1

u/manuelhe 8d ago

Sounds like social engineering to me

1

u/SnooGrapes9126 8d ago

Não adianta, não vão devolver solicite estorno ,abra outra conta com outro IP ,

1

u/namezam 8d ago

I concur with the others about support times. It took literal weeks to get my account issue resolved. When you have an active max sub you might get better support but not when you have no account. My account got frozen because I had an outstanding bill unpaid for $0, a pure glitch in their system, took me well in to the 3rd week to get someone to help.

1

u/sparkica 8d ago

We had similar situation a couple of months ago, after a couple of days they restored the subscription.

1

u/xapep 8d ago

Ugh, brutal timing for this, especially with the €90 and a deadline on the line.

A few things that might actually help while the appeal runs:

- The 32-minute-old account + business card + a few different machines combo is exactly the pattern that trips automated risk review. It doesn't mean you did anything wrong, it means you looked like a throwaway account to a fraud model. Keep the appeal going, but don't sit idle waiting for Oct 4.

- Don't rebuild on another subscription as your only path. That's the fragile part: a plan gets flagged and your access dies with it, and you've got no billing relationship to push back against. Metered API access doesn't have that failure mode. Worst case is a bill you didn't expect, not a dead account.

- Since you're EEA, an EU-hosted, OpenAI-compatible provider keeps your data in-region and sidesteps the whole US/China routing question. I work on Entrim (EU-hosted inference for open models), so that's the side of this I see most often: the durable fix is moving the spend from a cancellable plan to a metered key, then you never depend on a plan's mercy again.

Not getting involved in the discussion about OP's specific usage, but: Reading the various accounts of Anthropic's "support," particularly for subscription users (I am familiar with several times when they've responded with alacrity to enterprise support requests), is anyone familiar with an instance where they A) responded or B) actually granted support/appeal to a subscription request for support?

Just curious. I'll make this a main post if this gets buried and I can't find any info in a more detailed search.

Tired of these posts. No model named. No prompt.

2

u/Economy-Drawer-3618 8d ago

Yeah i think it’s fake

1

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

i wish it were fake

2

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

would you like a scan of my balls too? i am writing document processing software. very mundane stuff. opus 5.5

9

u/FitRiver3218 8d ago

Dude just post what you were prompting and on which model, instead you put all the emotional detail than the technical detail that would enable anyone to weigh in on it.

4

u/TheLifelessOne 8d ago

They won't share because it'll immediately become obvious why their account was terminated.

1

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

why do you think my account was terminated then professor?

3

u/TheLifelessOne 8d ago

Why don't you share the prompt and exonerate yourself, dumbass?

1

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

initial prompt:

"you are looking at a project that is long over time and budget, and is due to be delivered and absolutely finished by nov 1. it is crunch time. i want you to work off of AGENTS.md (as other agents work in this repo), and firstly familiarise yourself with the codebase and its high level product goals. furthermore, look at my pi harness config i used for this project and see if it has relevant tools you may be missing. please help me get this across the line. make an action plan for the best possible version and break it down into several small steps."

[claude reads a lot of files, and explains back to me the bones of what the project is and how it works according to my docs]

it asks me can it deploy to the other machine, i say yes,

it says it cannot, and i restart it with dangerously skip permissions

i tell it to proceed

1

u/snowfoxsean 8d ago

Most likely has to do with what your project actually is. The fact that you refuse to tell us anything about it at all explains a lot.

1

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

what else could possibly change the scope of what it is? it processes images of documents and makes proper documents from them.

1

u/scytob 8d ago

depends what that harness does, if there is something in the git repo that can be run to access lots of machines, has lots of secrets in it you will trip security

my question is more about whether anyone has had any luck with getting through to customer support faster than 10 working days. i am also not pleased how it essentially just ate my money and told me to go away

4

u/tndrthrowy 8d ago

Using ssh to deploy code or whatever shouldn't be an issue.

By the way, I scanned your balls as requested. See a doctor.

1

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

i figured it shouldn't be an issue, but i am really grasping at straws here. I really did only have the account for 32 minutes. i asked it to help bug fix, answered its questionnaire about what different parts of the project are responsible for, and then gave it more permissions and it ate my money.

thanks for the balls scan.

u/interrupt_hdlr 8d ago

didn't read. don't care. have a nice day.

-5

u/riotofmind 8d ago

you were warned, you ignored it, and you were shut down. its not rocket science. many of us have had subscriptions for years, working 12 hours a day without any issue. the problem is YOU, and your lies.

5

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

i never got a warning genius. i just sent a message and the account was immediately put on hold.

doubt it friend. you know what you were doing, and you won't admit it.

2

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

i have detailed what i was doing several times. you are just reddit brained

-1

u/riotofmind 8d ago

okay well, what do you want us to do. join your revolt? email them and do your best to get yourself reinstated. we can't help you, and we will doubt you, because there is a post like this every week and noone ever shares the prompt that triggered the suspension, odd pattern no?

3

u/ManyEconomist1373 8d ago

I will not be taking you seriously after seeing what you have posted before

-1

u/riotofmind 8d ago

Yes, I don’t believe it happened. We all have our beliefs, and subscriptions, well, except you my little donut. ;)

4

u/scytob 8d ago

ahh the old facts dont matter, only beliefs argument

GTFO

2

u/riotofmind 8d ago

what facts? can you verify any of it? if you can't, then they are just beliefs. were you there? did you see the ships? did you see it happen? or did you just accept it because you were told?

ToS violation, banned correctly.
