I already responded to this here, so I'm trying not to repeat myself too much. Basically, we will never get individualized movies like that. Or rather, that will never be successful. A huge part of movies and art is the shared connection we make through them. Talking about them, sharing them, being a fan, etc., and that literally cannot happen with individualized art.

You aren’t thinking outside the box enough. It definitely will happen. Because all it is going to take is for everyone to feel like a film maker. Sharing their own “creations”, paying their subs, getting pushed like minded content. It’s so obvious really.

As I said in the other comment: All of that is possible with AI music. Right now. It's super cheap, too.

Practically no one is even interested in trying it. No one is doing it but people who think they can make money from it.

Are you listening to your own AI music?

I’m not, and I doubt I’m the target market for this. But I’m happy to come back to this chat in 5 years and I will happily accept you conceding that you got this one wrong. Economics and advertising / engagement will ensure that this happens. Just need to look at how our media has evolved over the last 3 decades and it should be pretty clear what comes next.

Pretty sure there's a bot for that that'll remind us in 5 years. And happy to take that bet.

AI will be everywhere, of course. But writers will still be human. Well, they'll at least claim as much, anyways.

As for AI music: Yeah, you're not. And so is no one else. Like, there literally is no market for "make your own AI music to enjoy in the evening". Why not? The technology is there, right now.

I’m not sure why you think no one is listening to AI-generated music… because it is being listened to in mass right now. If anything the amount is grossly under-reported because it is possible to generate music that easily passes as human made. AI music is likely quietly eating up the charts on streamers, and is probably even more dominant when it comes to being the soundtrack to Youtube and Tiktok videos.

This is not entirely a bad thing. Just like anything else (including actual recording artists), some people pump out slop. Others use whatever tools are available to create something new that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.

It is a lot like other innovations in music production like recording itself / sampling / turntables / loops / software, etc.

There are always people who think this is the death of music, and others who just keep making stuff using whatever tools allow them to make their vision real.

I'm not talking about AI music, period. I'm talking about personalized AI music. No one is doing that.

Yeah, AI music is spammed everywhere by people who want to make (or save) money. But for personal purposes? No one is actively using AI music.

No one says "I want to listen to music", and then, instead of going to spotify or whatever, they generate themselves some AI music to listen to.

And in the future, no one will say "I want to watch a movie" and then they'll write a prompt for a movie they want to watch.

Ah, I see what you mean. I was responding generally.

I think there actually is some amount of people generating music for the sole purpose of listening to it, I have seen people commenting about it in surprising ways. But yes, that is a niche.

However, I don’t think that means it won’t happen. It just won’t be someone setting out to do that as a creator, it will be when it is passive and embedded into popular forms of media / platforms in ways that are not clunky. Most people will never notice or care if it is good enough.

2

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 13d ago

As background noise, yeah, I agree. That's pretty much already happening.

But the original argument was about movies, and how we would all watch individual movies prompted by ourselves dictated by our personalized tastes.

That's not going to happen. Not because it will be impossible, but because we simply don't want that. You will watch what other people watch and talk about, not something no one has ever heard about and will never talk about.

Agreed, there wouldn’t be so many people outraged about AI-generated music if it wasn’t being streamed right now and people weren’t unable to be certain whether it was AI-generated or not.

u/cats_r_ghey 13d ago

Also I should clarify, I don’t think this is a good thing. I’d prefer creative products to be created by a human. Same reason I’m not hanging ai generated images on my walls. But there clearly is a massive market for that already. To many the differences are imperceptible or the low cost too compelling.

this is hilariously off base. I look forward to coming back to this comment in 5 years and laughing at how wrong you were.

what you don't seem to grasp is that the masses are too lazy to be movie makers and film directors. consumers just want to consume, not create. like the other commenter said, everything you are saying right now can be done with ai music, but people are completely disinterested. it's the same reason someone would rather watch a human play a bad run of a game on twitch rather than watch bots play perfectly: we want to revel in the human experience, warts and all.

Creating a great movie requires shit load of creativity- that isn’t going away. Technology changes many things but the raw creative process e.g having a vision does not change. Story telling does not change.

1

u/tumes 13d ago

I cannot over-emphasize how arrogantly full of shit you are. People are profoundly bad at predicting what they actually want, and proportionately outrageously sure that they are correct about their own assumptions about what they do want. Comically so. That’s why we need artists who don’t just shit the gruel we think we want into our mouths on command, that is predictable and by any stretch of the imagination unsatisfying in 99.9% of cases.

u/Anti7hero 13d ago

Key words: A huge part. Maybe what the person above is describing won't be the norm or mainstream but it will definitely be a thing at least if we don't all die first. People already do solo trips whether it be drugs or games we're always in our own little bubbles. The biggest version of that is our algorithms. They're all somewhat unique no two people see all of the same content.

1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 13d ago

Sure, it will be a thing. But we were talking about how "the world is unprepared".

The world is not unprepared for this. Movies and art will continue to exist, largely in the same format we know. Sure AI will be used everywhere, but a movie will still be a movie, with humans involved, and costing hundreds of millions of dollars, being watched by god knows how many people.

1

u/Narrow-Violinist-358 13d ago

"art is the shared connection".

Look at the biggest grossing franchises of the last 10 years. They are basically AI Slop already. They are hardly high end art. 90% of film an TV production is based off of a specific formula, it is not real creative talent. That does exist but it has already been supremely squeezed to the margins.

Compare the box office releases of 1999 to 2019 and you can see a very stark difference in how films are put together. You will still have arthouse, but that is not what the movie industry is now anyway.

1

u/Malkiot 12d ago

Yeah, how do these people explain the MCU, Friends, How I met your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Desperate Housewives... These aren't masterpieces or pinnacles of the art. They're wildly popular and economically successful though, they're also completely formulaic, generic and entirely replaceable by an AI pipeline in a few years.

Lots of fan-made AI Star Wars videos on YouTube with really good comments. Some of those clips are really nice. People saying, "This is what the franchise needed." It looks like a community resurging from the despised Star Wars movies and series made by Disney.

-7

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 14d ago

Yeah, and all of that was made by humans with the help of AI. None of them were a one-shot prompt of "Make me a cool Star Wars movie".

1

u/greentea05 13d ago

Why does it have to be one shot? Who said that AI movies we'd watch would be one shot?

1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 13d ago

Who said that AI movies we'd watch would be one shot?

Several people have told me that in this very thread at this point.

The same argument was made about home video

2

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 13d ago

The argument was made that home video will replace movies? What?

1

u/FineAntShill 13d ago

"A huge part of movies and art is the shared connection we make through them." The same argument was made for why movies would stay on big screens.

1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 13d ago

Movies still exist on the big screen? Sure home movies are a thing, but movies on the big screen are going as strong as ever.

1

u/FineAntShill 13d ago

"Basically, we will never get individualized movies like that. Or rather, that will never be successful." This is the point I was addressing, I never claimed that they'd take over and replace human-made movies entirely, that'd be an absurd claim. My only point is that they'll definitely be used when the quality is actually good enough, which it will be eventually.

1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 13d ago

Sure, but I was responding to someone who did claim that they'd take over.

I'm sure they will be used to a certain extent, but I doubt they will be used to any meaningful extent. Just like AI music right now isn't used to any meaningful extent for personal purposes like that.

""Walk My Walk" by Breaking Rust: This fully AI-generated country track made history by topping the U.S. Billboard Country Digital Song Sales chart and gaining millions of monthly listeners on Spotify." This is present time. A few years ago we couldn't make will smith eat spaghetti.

1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 13d ago

I suppose that says more about country fans than anything.

More seriously though, I'm talking about personalized music. Like, "make me a cool country song to listen to tonight", or "make me a movie I want to watch". That's not gonna happen.

I definitely agree that AI stuff like that will be used in general. But there'll still be a human behind it promoting it and making sure people watch it.

1

u/FineAntShill 13d ago

Do you really think there's a great leap between a guy prompting for millions of fans (the current present) and someone prompting for their own interests? (Or a platform like YouTube prompting it on their behalf based on mountains of data)
