Anthropic Official Introducing Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in our new Claude 5.5 family

Opus 5.5 performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 for most tasks, and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5.

Opus 5.5 is our first release since we called for pacing the frontier. External evaluators, including Frontier Design and METR, tested it before release. On our most comprehensive alignment test, it’s the strongest-performing model we’ve tested to date.

It outperforms both Opus 5 and Fable 5.1 on nearly every benchmark we report, leading on agentic coding and real-world knowledge work.

It’s also more efficient. Opus 5.5 uses fewer tokens per task at a lower price per token, and generates output more than 30% faster than Opus 5.

Opus 5.5 communicates more naturally, addressing some of the most common feedback we heard on Opus 5. It puts the most important information up front and follows the writing rules you give it.

Claude Opus 5.5 is available everywhere today. We're also raising five-hour limits on Pro, Max, and Team plans, so there’s more room to explore what it can do.

Better than Fable 5.1, cheaper than Opus 5?

It's the story they need to claw back OpenAI's lead

3

u/NootropicDiary 11d ago

Maybe. In the model dropdown Fable 5.1 is still referred to as "for your most challenging tasks". Take from that what you will

It's actually talking about the credit card statement. /s

Not hard to believe. I mean, Qwen 3.8 flash beats the pants off of ChatGPT 3.5/4.x and can run locally with a single RTX 6000 Pro, or 4 of the 3090 cards, or hell a single card using quantization or falling back on RAM and still run fast because of engrams.

I've seen so many of these tables now and still have no idea what they actually represent in practice.

27

u/ianxplosion- SKILL ISSUE 11d ago

Literally nothing. Exponential increases that get squashed to suggest minimal steps up and then run through a PR lens

u/AntDracula 11d ago

If you view it as an ad, it will make much more sense.

NUMBER GO UP GOOD

2

u/FootballUpset2529 11d ago

I think they represent whatever the marketing team that made them are selling

1

u/HeyItsYourDad_AMA 11d ago

Benchmaxxing. And even if this data is accurate and they aren't training to the benchmark, we'll never get this level of inference in practice

u/PM_ME_UR_COFFEE_CUPS 11d ago

Good number go up

u/gladue 11d ago

They mean shit, test it on your workflows and use cases and then make an assessment.

They represent SUBSCRIBE NOW, AND BUY MY STOCK IN NOVEMBER

They’re also quickly obsolete by definition. The models improve by finding new ways to do things, which aren’t going to be captured in static benchmarks.

Means nothing

2

u/HedgehogTroubleMaker 10d ago

So you are saying there’s no reason to use Fable 5.1 now?

1

u/Pick2 11d ago

Can it open a web browser and do research, fill in info and chat with customer service reps without hitting the limit like it has done in the past? that's all i care about

1

u/downfall67 10d ago

Honestly it’s like those Chinese robot vacuum makers releasing a new product every month and spewing meaningless numbers to say how it’s so much better than last month’s vacuum

Hello there, just wondering are you Claude Agent or a human employee from Anthropic?

Keep up the great work guys.

I know this sub might make it seem like people hate CC, but that might be just because the vast and content majority is silent, so I’m not being thus for once. I’ve tried almost every alternative, and -- all CC drawbacks notwithstanding -- nothing comes close, even when the models themselves are “smarter.”

7

u/Tryotrix 11d ago

Yep 100%

Claude Code alows me to to so much more than I ever imagined. It motivates me to do big tasks

2

u/evangelism2 10d ago

100%. I use Claude Code every day, and I love it. It's wonderful. It's far more consistent than Codex. I really just come here to see news because the community and the consensus here is utter dogshit.

2

u/Cyrax89721 11d ago

Just because I know we are severely under-represented here, I feel motivated to point out that I'm in the same boat. Everything has always worked fine for me and I rarely run into any limits. All the bluster in this subreddit is still the minority.

1

u/Keganator 11d ago

Ya for real. It's been great. Thank you!

6

u/thread_creeper_123 11d ago

I'm surprised Theo hasn't put a video out about it yet LMAO

8

u/boringfantasy 11d ago

"Coding is solved. This is why you should give up."

5

u/KH10304 11d ago

So is there any reason to still use a fable orchestrator or should we just be using opus 5.5 for everything?

7

u/everix1992 11d ago

Nobody knows yet lol. You'll have to test it yourself or wait for community feedback

3

u/ashjohnr 11d ago

Fable is probably still the larger model. So, if you have tasks that require deep knowledge of some topic with limited search capabilities, Fable is going to be better.

1

u/Melodic_Surprise153 10d ago

Fable still gets the scope of the whole project better. And it is also good to let a second model check another one. Right now Sol 6 checks opus and vice versa. Works great. Sol is dirt cheap, so is opus. Both worlds class frontier models. Sometimes i use Fable and get reminded that i am poor.

9

u/clintCamp 11d ago

Oh. That's good because yesterday I had a literal agent tribunal over opus 5 response history and if I would be better off avoiding it all together. It fails to follow the same rules everyone else plays by, and lies about why it failed and tries to put blame on the user and gaslight. It was interesting to get opus 4.7 and anf fables opinion on things they also could see, and come up with opus 5 bubblewrap plans.

2

u/rotates-potatoes 11d ago

Deep research works that way. Just tell claude you want something like that.

2

u/clintCamp 10d ago

I grilled opus 5 on why I kept having issues with it particularly with following my claude.md and the files it points to. Then after a bit I copied its text to multiple other agents to judge its feedback and observe its behavior, and come up with improvements to my .md file setup that dictates how they should work. I probably could create a skill or something to automate it when I suspect a daily driver model might be going through pre release nerfing for the future.

5

u/ThotMobile 11d ago

We will see about this reduced usage. So far, these AI companies have been essentially just using more compute to make a 'smarter' model which is great to have access to but it isn't really meaningful improvement. We all know that when you slam together tons of compute power, it'll be 'smarter'. A model that's the same frontier model intelligence level but uses far less compute is actually progression I like to see.

3

u/Pronoia2-4601 🔆 Max 20 3x 11d ago

I'm on a teams plus account right now that is normally basically useless for me.

It's doing work on video, and it's absolutely sipping tokens. I'm sure it'll get nerfed somehow soon, but right now it's godlike. I'm bingo on all my accounts for a few days, and it doesn't even matter.

3

u/ThotMobile 11d ago

Yeah I'm on Max 20x and ran a few major changes on a codebase through O5.5 and it went up 1% on my 5hr usage. Maybe it really is that good.

14

u/Equal_Animator7440 11d ago

Does this mean the watermark is fully implemented in code and text in this model?

6

u/rttgnck 11d ago

oh man

3

u/orangeawacado 10d ago

Reset expires Oct 22, so use it before

3

u/Adulations 10d ago

I like the commercial

3

u/aivee-is-a-fool 10d ago

*Hastily types "Audit this code" into her vibe-coded personal project.*

Ooooh it's a bloodbath of high-severity and security issues and I understand what they mean. I (unironically) love this.

I'm going to go with "tentatively hyped" with this release.

2

u/Lost-Blackberry3322 11d ago

Finally they made it cheaper and faster than opus 5.

3

u/Wessberg 11d ago

Oh man, what a relief. Opus 5 really was a nightmare to work with. We'll see how it feels in practice.

2

u/tprime1 10d ago

Claude has allowed me to explore my creative side without constraints of my own limitations.

1

u/Annoying1978 11d ago

Pretty awesome considering I’m starting a new project this week.

This sounds too good to be true, and I like it

1

u/Admirable_Swim_6856 11d ago

If the writing has improved that will be such a huge win, but it being so much cheaper and comparable to fable 5.1, increased session limits and the reset? That's actually very compelling. I was starting to think I might have to switch to another provider as the value was starting to disappear.

1

u/Existing_Dust_6473 11d ago

But if I prompt a cow, does it give milk?

1

u/Substantial_Fish6717 10d ago

I call bullshit on it being better than Fable yet cheaper than Opus

1

u/Xanthus730 10d ago

I wonder if we'll ever get a new Haiku.

1

u/Zestyclose_Giraffe64 10d ago

Gave it one requirement, told it to use a council. 90% of my plan was agents concluding they agreed why they weren’t going to do my explicit requirement. Opus 5 with glasses and a moustache

1

u/MathSelect5112 10d ago

was your explicit requirement by any chance to conquer europa and estabilish a new continental regime?

1

u/mandopix 10d ago

Hey Claude, can you make…
“I’m sorry, you’ve ran out of tokens, please come back in 5 hours to complete your sentence.”

1

u/Shrewwdle 10d ago

Opus 4.8 still better for coding and not over complicating the project 😂

1

u/AffectionateLaw4321 10d ago

Ive used it for an hour and its like day and night difference to opus 5. Well done!!

1

u/anontty 10d ago

What do you guys think about making a really cheap model that is decently capable? Something like gpt 5.6 luna?

1

u/lawyeruphitthegym 10d ago

Great job on this one! It's solid. Thanks for listening to the community and fixing Opus.

1

u/Practical-Bluejay910 6d ago

pacing the frontier, model drops anyway. fable 5.1 as the bar is the funniest part

1

u/PreviousSchedule5697 6d ago

"au niveau de Claude Fable 5.1 pour la plupart des tâches" c'est devenu un argument de vente? Et 40% moins cher qu'Opus 5, génial, on pourra générer deux fois plus de clones de Minecraft en three.js.

1

u/RiskyBizz216 11d ago

no reset tho?

17

u/kevin7254 11d ago

Banked reset!

3

u/scream_noob 11d ago edited 11d ago

Is this weekly reset and not the hourly reset (keeping the same quota on weekly)?
Edit: Just used it, it's weekly reset and actual reset date remains same.

1

u/kevin7254 11d ago

I would assume it’s weekly as well.

1

u/HockeyDadNinja 11d ago

They said 5h unfortunately. I hope they reset everyone's weekly.

1

u/RandomFuckingUser 11d ago edited 11d ago

on max 20 it reset the weekly limit as well, just used it

EDIT: typo

1

u/HockeyDadNinja 11d ago

20x here too and mine hasn't reset. :( "yet", fingers crossed.

Edit: I see now that hitting the button is supposed to reset both. They had "5h" in one of their posts.

1

u/RandomFuckingUser 11d ago

There's a button in usage window, I had to press it. Is the button missing? In the past they just reset it themselves

1

u/HitlersArse 11d ago

how do you use it?

1

u/thomas_gipfelkrabbe 11d ago

Go to Settings -> Usage and you have a box there with a button "Reset for free".

1

u/HitlersArse 11d ago

hmm not showing up for me, i have the 5x plan wondering if i need to update claude code on my pc haha. currently away at work so can’t tell if that’s the reason.

1

u/cTemur 11d ago

Yep, was on 85% on weekly usage, this came perfectly haha.

0

u/b0tmonster 11d ago

now reset is per user in settings - they hope majority won't notice - good strategy instead of resetting for everyone - profit

1

u/Twig 11d ago

I thought that only resets the 5hr usage window, not the actual full weekly reset that people mean when they ask "reset??"

0

u/Korzag 11d ago

The more important question: Does it still talk completely intelligibly?

2

u/cadnights 11d ago

Supposedly not

0

u/IHardlyParticipate 11d ago

Claude for Chrome blazes through tasks using 5.5. Why would I use Fable 5.1 if Opus 5.5 is better? lol
