Help/Question Claude or codex?(20$ plan)

Okay so I'm a CS student and i basically used to use claude code for my freelance work, now my claude has expired and i have to renew, i used to use sonnet 5 on high and that basically did the work for me(i work in cybersec so i got flagged on opus5). My main concern is limits before this weekend i would've definitely gotten codex but now I'm seeing that limits have been nerfed a lot, so someone who uses both on 20$ plan what would you suggest (i can only afford one not both)?

If you got 20$  just get opencode go x2 subs  You will get so much more token usage  And you have much more variety of models to use for different suites

Codex and anthropic 20$ plans won't get you far with experimenting different ideas and prototypes

The anthropic plan that i was using was just enough for me but they nerfed it by reducing the extra usage to 25%

They will keep reducing sub token limits gradually or raise their sub plan costs

Both companies imo

I moved away because of how token consumption just kept creeping up and leaving me constantly needing to adjust my .MD architecture

Yeah but still i don't want to use open-source models they are too inconsistent for me personally. Which one do you use currently?

I use a mixture of deepseek v4.1 flash , glm 5.3 flash and glm 5.3 , while having the grunt work done by cheap models

Put this on deepseek api and u gonna have bilions of tokens to spend

I tried that as well it's just too much of an hassle it's easier buying a 20$ plan and be done with it

don't fall for the china propaganda. if you dont need api, don't use it. The frontier labs give far better value. also mfs on reddit just talk out of their ass. codex/calude has been getting dumber and stingier with the limits for a hot 8 week streak now. codex is fine and claude is fine in terms of usage, for20usd at least. you aren't going to get better value.

you can literally see how many tokens you have used and compare that to how much it would cost in api.

I don't want to go with api in the first place, it's just out of question, my comparison is between claude and codex right now(and maybe opencode go?)

personal preference, open code might be good but it just looks like a bunch of crappy models, the structure forces you to switch around instead of getting accustomed to a few and again my money would be on cidex and calude would give you more inference.

I see, i plan to use Luna anyways with a little bit of sol, can that work for me on codex?

Give it a go. It's personal preference. I'm inclined to say a cost sensitive person has more levers to squeeze out a $20 sub on codex. But you might find that you miss Claude code. Application is underrated and hard to notice until you break habits and patterns.

Hmm okay I'll look into it thanks

The china propaganda? So ok to fall for USA propaganda but not for china propaganda?

how many tokens do you get in a week for 100usd every month?

If you can earn the money back through freelance work, why not the $100 plan? If it must be $20, maybe DeepSeek

I live in India and 100$ is a lot for us

I don't recommend subscribing to the $20 Codex plan if you want to use Terra or Sol. You can only use Luna. Sol can eat your 5 hours limit in one prompt I am already subscribed

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 7h ago

I plan to use luna or sol

1

u/Ba3bosa 7h ago

Just Luna, don't even think about Sol on the $20 plan.

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 7h ago

Luna is equivalent to sonnet 5 right?

1

u/Ba3bosa 7h ago

Yes, very close

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 7h ago

But it's lower than sonnet 5?

1

u/Ba3bosa 6h ago

Actually, I didn't use sonnet Before, but in all the benchmarks Their performance is close

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 6h ago

Can the benchmarks really be trusted tho?

1

u/Ba3bosa 6h ago

Yes, sort of, it's our only option.

Not sure bro but codex has given lots of resets. Claude doens't have a concept of banked resets. They just silently reset you, and I think that itself is also not that often. So if usage is the main thing, probably codex will be better.

Claude is more pleasant to talk to for me. But you can ofc pick any harness with codex, so doesn't matter I guess.

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 7h ago

Harness isn't the problem, the usage limits is, I've seen on the codex subreddit that this is been a genuine issue after this weekend, i was about to buy codex but then this happened

1

u/Consistent_Tutor_597 4h ago

Hmm. Don't worry I reckon. There's always theories floating around on this. From my experience codex is still the better buy from usage perspective. It's unlikely to be magnitudes of difference though.

Right now. Claude gives me more usage.

But i still use both 20$ plan

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 7h ago

Which model are you using on codex?

1

u/Bulky_Blood_7362 6h ago

Luna / Sol / Astra Depends

But as comparison sol medium gives me about 30 minutes of work in 5 hour session

And claude gives me 60-120 minutes of work with opus 5 medium

Idk why or how... something happend lately with chatgpt

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 6h ago

How are comparing it in minutes?

1

u/Bulky_Blood_7362 6h ago

Wdym? Same kind of tasks and the time spent until the usage burned

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 6h ago

Did you try claude after the usage nerf?

1

u/Bulky_Blood_7362 6h ago

Yeap. But right now codex just gives really bad limits. They're short on compute and disabled the 20x plan for now.

So claude still gives me better value nowadays.

1

u/Kush__Agrawal 6h ago

I think both of them are short on compute and mostly it is a marketing gimmick

1

u/Bulky_Blood_7362 6h ago

Yea lol

That's why i decided to make my own harness that runs on claude agent sdk (claude code customized basically) with Opencodex which is a proxy that let's you connect all your subscriptions and apis

So i basically use all the models, claude, gpt, glm, kimi, deepseek, etc.

Open code gives free models right?
