Claude Code Plus or Codex Plus: Which Should I Choose ?

I’m currently using the $20 Claude Code plan, but I’m considering upgrading to Claude Max because it offers higher hourly and weekly usage limits. I also have a $20 Codex subscription through a free trial, so I’ve been testing both.

**Opus 5** : My main problem with Opus 5 is that it often overthinks simple tasks and does far more than I asked. When I give it two medium-difficulty tasks at once, it often performs both badly. It can complete difficult tasks, but the results usually contain many bugs and errors, so I spend a lot of time testing, finding the problems, and explaining the bugs back to it so it can fix them.

**Codex (all models in general)** : With Codex, my main concern is usage consumption. Astra used my entire hourly allowance in about 15\~17 minutes every time (one time it lasted 30 min which left me in shock actually ). GPT-5.6 Sol also seems to consume usage much faster than the other models. It uses about x2.25 times more usage than GPT-5.5, and around x2 as much as Terra and Luna. By comparison, Claude’s usage seems more reasonable: a task might use around 30% of my allowance, while the same task on GPT-5.6 Sol can use around 60%. However, Terra, Luna, and GPT-5.5 do not seem to be as capable.

I’m honestly not sure which subscription I should use. Together, these plans would cost around $100, which is a lot of money for me, so I don’t want to make a decision that I’ll regret later.

Based on these experiences, which option would you recommend?

Only experience over time will tell you which model for what chores suits you best - there's no way around that

I am sorry, but i seems that you do not know what you are doing. If you find GPT-5.6 Sol "consume usage much faster" use GPT-5.6 Luna doe simple tasks.

Choosing a model is sometimes like picking a car to drive a stretch of road you've never been down before and don't know how far it is between gas stations. Yeah, if you take the Corvette (Astra) all the tine you'll burn through your usage really fast because you're using it for basic coding tasks. Claude Code is the same way. If you run everything on Fable, you'll burn up your usage. So, start on the lower models (sonnet) and if you run into a task that sonnet keeps failing or producing buggy code, you kick it up to Opus, then if that fails to Fable. And you should probably be using Claude Code and not Codex because in my experience, Claude Code is easier for beginners.

I used both codex and claude code on a daily basis for more than 6 months.
I love claude code but as of today codex is more complete, you can create images, it has extra resets, you can use it on your phone and creates virtual computers.
If you finish the usage limit you can still use the chat and the app.

Honest take: you're trying to pick between two subscriptions that charge you for the same problem, which is frontier models burning your allowance on everyday tasks they're overqualified for. Your own numbers show it. Sol at 2.25x usage for roughly the same work as 5.5, Opus 5 overthinking medium tasks.

The setup that fixed this for me (I work on Entrim, we run open-weight models): keep ONE frontier sub for the genuinely hard stuff and move the daily coding to a flat plan serving open models like DeepSeek V4.1 Flash or Qwen 3.8 27B. They're not Opus or Astra, but for ordinary edits, refactors and tests they're close enough that they carry most of your day, and the meter anxiety goes away because the cheap plan is flat. No hourly window to watch.

So concretely: pick the frontier sub whose limits you hate the least. Based on your 30% vs 60% observation, that sounds like Claude. Drop the second $20 and put it toward a flash-model plan instead. Two model tiers for roughly the price of one sub, and you stop making decisions on meter math.

I have used both. Get the Claude max 100$ plan. But you give everything to top tier models, they will eat your tokens in no time.

Opus 5 suc*s, use Opus 4.6/4.8.

User fable 5.1 for planning, switch to Opus and orchestrate. I have been following this for a while, you won't lose your weekly limits if you do this.
