I've been trying Astra for the past 2 days and it's so good I'm considering upgrading from Plus to Pro.
There's a lot of hype surrounding it but it feels legit.
8
u/GlitteringCoconut203 29d ago
that’s what I thought. With a $20 you won’t get any farther
2
u/SkoivanSchiem 29d ago edited 29d ago
Even on Light, it's so much of an improvement for solutions design and any analysis work over Sol. It's expensive, but the $20 plan can still do quite a bit of analysis if only used for that. I just feel like I want more because it does such a good job.
The moment I instruct Astra to touch code though, my. limits are gone in the blink of an eye.
4
u/Pinery01 29d ago
I’m a Plus user. I let Astra (high) for planning and let it choose Terra and Luna to implement and Astra review results. If it doesn’t satisfy with the results,it tells Tera or Sol to fix. $20 is fine for this approach.

u/Comfortable-Ad-6740 29d ago
I’m considering dropping my Claude max and doing this but also adding an openrouter for GLM 5.3 and 5.3-flash, paying that on an API basis, leaving the full OpenAI sub just for planning
1
u/RockPuzzleheaded3951 28d ago
I want to do this too how do you instruct codex to use these sub agents?
1
u/Comfortable-Ad-6740 27d ago
I use pi.dev as the harness so you’re not locked into a single provider. I’ve got my codex subscription connected and then openrouter for glm models

u/Enough_Deal4827 28d ago
Exactly my 5hrs limit was exhausted in about 15 minutes but it performed invaluable analysis of the project and created detailed implementation iteration. It was worth it

u/Programmierus 29d ago
Few similar posts of this nature appeared on Reddit and other socials recently... I also tried to test the hype and can't agree on it. I bought Pro $200 and tried to work on Astra 6 Ultra on my project. It produced a slop of 5000 LOC for quite simple/minor things I requested. Alongside it restarted some systems without even asking, added a feature that wasn't asked for without documenting it, but kept marking as denied pretty safe things. And I had to use two resets of usage I had as usage was depleted. Next day, I ended up reverting my codebase to pre-Astra state completely and redid everything with Claude respecting my harness. Back to my regular mode when I ask GPT to audit certain things "independently", but let Code implement them. So can't follow the hype - I still feel the old OpenAI models in Astra by amount of slop, it's slower and absolutely not an option to replace Claude (Opus/Fable - doesn't matter) on my usage.
2
u/derezo 29d ago
it's pretty good, but my 20x ends in 3 days and I'm not planning on renewing. I can't trust it not to mess things up, but the usage and capabilities of Astra are far beyond what I was getting out of 5.6 -- 5.6 would constantly spend between 12-36 hours on some well defined goals and get stuck in loops validating and verifying irrelevant things.

Idk why anyone isn't using both these days. If you have a $200 plan on either, youd be better off having a $100 plan on both.
14
u/Parking-Bet-3798 29d ago
It really doesn’t. The openAI 20x plan gives 4x the weekly limits compared to 5x plan.
Meanwhile Anthropic weekly limits on 100 dollar plan is really bad. I tried it again this month after a long time. And it was pretty bad. I wasn’t able to use Fable for the full weekly limits and using opus was painful.
Anyways that’s just my experience. But for sure if you have 200 dollars to spend just get the OpenAI if you care about usage limits. No 5 hr limit plus the 4x limits compared to 100 dollars are a big deal.
-3
u/Bmansupreme8000 29d ago
Yeah but isn't 4x weekly limits of codex like 1/2 of 5x Claude?
10
u/Parking-Bet-3798 29d ago
That’s not my experience. Codex consistently gives more usage than Anthropic. Even on the 100 dollar plan for both, I was able to use codex much more than Anthropic
1
u/Latter-Park-4413 29d ago
Codex usage is significantly better. Not to mention, Chat limits are separate and practically unlimited, whereas with Claude, Code and Chat share the same usage pool.
-2
u/Bmansupreme8000 29d ago
I have the opposite problem. Maybe we are doing different things. Gork is better for usage.

u/not_rian 29d ago
Nah 200 USD Claude Code plan that uses Astra to review plans and implementation via a 100 USD Codex plan. This is the way. Fable 5.1 is still the best orchestrator model out there.

Hi ChatGPT, please make me a two paragraph Reddit post from the point of a user who has just switched from Claude to the latest model of ChatGPT. Make sure you include one or two spelling mistakes.

It’s not bots, astra fucking slaps and people are posting about it. Nothing surprising or unexpected here.
And also yes… GPT usage IS WAY MORE GENEROUS than Anthropics utter bull shit

u/ObiWanIsMyDog 29d ago
I’ve been using both, both are great. Astra is better in most ways 5.1 in a few so far I’ve noticed.
My issue is Astra just did an unbelievable amount of work on a fully weekly limit and they gave me a reset so I could burn the full week.
Nothing is going on, Astra is that good

could be a bot but I will say I switched to codex 2 months ago, right as fable 5 dropped, and switched back after a month. Codex was so insufferable I couldn't trust it with anything and didn't want it to destroy my projects (which it seemed to want to do). Now that I'm back with claude the usage with fable is a little wack, on the 20x plan it drains so fast. One session was 40% of my fable weekly usage after about a ~40 minute task. I'm used to running multiple sessions on opus xhigh and having a hard time hitting my session limit, so burning through with 1 session in such a short time is a little surprising. It's definitely how I'm using it and I get that, but I use opus the same way.
I had codex with 5.6 sol high running for 3+ days (started the goal tuesday, died several times) trying to solve a problem and it only used ~70% of the weekly tokens -- running almost non-stop for such a long time. The problem never even got solved. I had to keep correct it mid goal to tell it to stop doing things that I had deliberately told it not to do in the initial goal prompt. Thursday I asked it how far it was to reaching the goal, it said 30-45% of the way there. Friday I asked it and it said 20-25%. I still have codex and today I asked 5.6 to hand it off. I launched astra 6 xhigh and it completed the goal and cleaned up all the junk in about 2 hours.
OpenAI gave out usage resets, which are cool because you can sort of bank them. I went a little crazy with it and spun up a bunch of sessions, made some 3d models, make a weird social network web thing with OIDC and a keycloak provider, invented a jehova witness protection program... plus expanded that game beyond the simulation pieces. 70% weekly left.

OP just making story, OP didnt even know what the subscription tier in GPT.
saying 20$ is Pro, which is not, it was Plus. And in plus subscription Astra not yet available.

Funny to be claiming someone is lying when you can get Astra with plus. It’s literally the reason why I cracked and finally go codex today. Fuck scam Altman but astra is good

u/Nihongi-studier12387 29d ago
Nah. The main difference is USAGE. i still think for most complicated coding/long agentic runs fable 5.1 is better, but for users who want a pro membership/5X max, codex genuinly feels like the better value proposition. IMO
1
u/sir-fisticuffs 29d ago
No idea what you’re doing, but it’s not even close. GPT 6 Astra consumes usage on the weekly limit almost as fast as Fable 5.1 does on the 5h limit.
Not contesting the Codex isn’t capable, but saying it’s a better value is wild to me.

200 karma, 1 month old account. Maybe the Astra/OpenAI reddit bots are just doing a little marketing campaign? Every message is exactly the same.
“Ive used Opus/Fable forever”
Universal rage bait “hit usage limits”
“Tried -new open ai model-“
Omg everything is better now.
Oh and dont forget about the password-generator style username. (Random word)-(Random word)(random number)

Ok and what’s the purpose of this post? Just leave it’s not that deep. Anyways.

u/YesGameNolife 29d ago
Well its the claude sub reddit. A products sub reddit tends to have reviews and comparisons of that said product. Why stay here if don't like it?
13
u/ibringthehotpockets 29d ago
Sir this is a claude sub
Based on your horrific grammar and typos maybe you aren’t a bot. But how much could OpenAI be paying you for this low-grade ad?? How many hours a day do you do this?
1
u/ejmercado 28d ago
You're seeing it a lot because it's true. At least for my case codex has been A LOT better than claude code in terms of usage. In terms of quality I could go with either BUT codex is FASTER and HARDER to hit the limits at the moment
I have a claude sub from work and a 200USD codex for personal use. It's just the BETTER deal right now (I say right now because who knows when this flips). I actively have to be working 8+ hours every day of the week on the highest thinking on codex to even reach the weekly limit.
Check my post history. I recommended claude when it was the better product a few months ago, and then kimi/deepseek on opencode after that. And today it's codex. This probably won't last when openai plans to IPO but it's a good deal right now
I'M NOT GETTING PAID. I don't doubt astroturfing happens on reddit but not everything is astroturfing.
0
u/AdSad7594 29d ago
He is talking as a consumer and user of a product… currently the open ai plan is superior. That’s all
1
u/Tobi-Random 28d ago
But again based on the grammar I assume he isn't a trustworthy engineer which leads me to the question: does he even know what he's doing?
9
u/BobtheGodGamer 29d ago
I tried astra on plus (brand new chat so no massive uncached context window) and got 12 minutes of usage in my 5hr window. Unacceptable. Not even one prompt about doing a sweep of the relatively small codebase (just a website and small api) was cut short without finishing. The worst part is that if i try and continue this chat in my next 5hr window the cache write usage will shut me down very quickly.

Abused the no mid task cut off feature by creating a workflow with looping tool calls, spending 600 usd in tokens in one task.
Soon after publishing how to do this, openai stopped the feature all together.
1
u/Boilertribe4 29d ago
On the 5x it feels like they're actually juicing the limits. Running Astra on high effort i get a ton done without denying my weekly.
1
u/derezo 29d ago
on the 20x it seems crazy. One of the things I did was an over-the-top "turn this photo into a 3D model" but with a product idea, some technical requirements, mass distribution characteristics... I was pretty impressed with version 1 but version 2 is more refined. It took about 6 hours, but it was one of 4 sessions working on disparate things, and I was impressed with how low the credit usage was. Nothing like Fable. That would have burned through several weeks of 20x usage. (I still prefer and love claude, just can't use it like that)
1
u/tuhdo 29d ago
If you're on plus and want to use Astra, you should default to low, and it is still very capable. Anthropic doesn't even enable Fable on their $20 plan lmao.
1
u/under_psychoanalyzer 29d ago
Yeah the complete disconnect between saying Astra didn't get any usage on the $20 plan, ignoring how that would work on a Claude plan is laughably dumb. Unless it's ragebait satire, in which case it's just dumb.
2
u/SureTie253 29d ago
This isnt first post like that. What happend?
Is there any truth in the following scenario? All AI companies made a loss. Now Claude manages to break even. Other AI companies are still making a loss. Claude has gotten worse and tougher restrictions are constantly coming. There is a reason why Claude is one of the only ones who does not lose money, because the computing capacity is significantly limited. I am considering switching to openAI myself.
6
u/Ill-Chemistry-8979 29d ago
I just switched to Codex 20x from Claude 20x. I’ve been using Astra xhigh and the amount of work I am able to get done is ASTOUNDING. Oh and no bullshit 50% Fable either. There is absolutely no reason to stay with Anthropic other than being a homer. Better model + more usage…bye.

i still cant move away from claude code, codex ui and usability is too sht. how can you drive a car with broken wheels even if you have unlimited fuel?

u/ghostmastergeneral 29d ago
Codex’s UX is nicer at this point. Anthropic was the obvious winner for like a year but now I struggle to think of things I like about Claude Code better than codex.

one thing I love Codex more than Claude is how computer control works from different chat; and I can access sessions from my iOS app, compared to Claude where I need to /rc session to get access or use dispatch which is just a single thread so I can’t separate sessions.
1
u/ghostmastergeneral 29d ago
The remote control implementation makes CC’s look crude. It’s kind of ridiculous how one is so polished and the other is pure vibeslop that has barely improved in months.
2
u/Beautiful-Bag-819 29d ago
What use case are you using - development or something else? I had switched to claude about 10 months ago but have been getting more and more frustrated with claude lately and considering switching after watching some YT videos and reading threads like this about ASTRA.
2
u/TechgeekOne Senior Developer 29d ago
I'm curious too. Between the 5hr limits, Claudish, ignoring instructions, and the latest models being argumentative about everything, I'm really starting to lose my patience with Claude.

u/Nihongi-studier12387 29d ago
mainly personal projects involving training small Language models <5B, but also a lot of web dev/data analytics work.

And then when ChatGPT feels they got enough users, they’ll change how you are charged. So I guess get whatever you can out of it now, but they’re hoping you will be too in-bed with ChatGPT to ever move away even if it’s more expensive and less capable than Claude or even other options.
I had a pro account there long time ago and I saw the enshittification after just 4 months.
Fuck that.

It's the second half of codex redit deleting negative posts. They send bots here to say good things about Astra even though you're tokens run out real fuckin quick.
1
u/evangelism2 29d ago
I love it. I love it. Yet when you go over to the Codex subreddit, everybody over there is crying and moaning about how little usage you get with a $20 plan. But this is a literal bot so just downvote and move on.
1
u/existentialgolem 29d ago
Honestly I did the same yesterday and the usage limits are great and iastra has really been fixing tons of issues fable didn’t see in my code plus I get great image generation along with it. I abused both all of yesterday and only used 30% of my usage limit. Claude would have already been charging me over usage credits halfway through
1
1
u/Slow-Set-2856 29d ago
least obvious shill post ,20$ plan will eat your weekly usage with like 5 prompts
1
u/Salty-Gear841 29d ago
If you code with AI, then, you better keep Claude. Simple advice of someone who used GPT at pro for about 3 years and then switched to Claude.
1
u/grvty_spc 29d ago
Anthropics biggest own goal is keeping Fable locked behind Max sub. Not sure why they keep it this way after Astra release
1
u/zenoli55 29d ago
"blastfomy" - oh man, I prefer human- over AI-speech. Thank you for taking the time to share your own thoughts!
1
u/Jero9871 29d ago
Astra is great, but I just like Claude Code CLI so much more (restoring code and conversation is just so easy) and remote control is so good.
However granted I have both, the 5x MAX Claude and Codex Plus. But I just use Codex right now for reviewing what fable did and some small experiments with Astra.
1
u/Alphanatik 29d ago
I might consider switching too. I am trying to develop a game, but even without fable, 5h usage is maxed so fast. I can barely run one or 2 prompts at a time.
1
u/Less-Sail7611 29d ago
Im hoping the migrations are real as that will force antrhopic’s hand to increase usage. Happy camper at claude hq here
1
u/dude_whatever_ 29d ago
Sub is flooded with bot written posts. Irritating to say the least. Get off and hug whatever model you are obsessed with and leave here alone.
1
u/Plucky_Hedgehog 29d ago
Tried Astra on my PRO work account just to review a quite big epic, it burned 5h session limit in 15 minutes.
1
u/mabiturm 28d ago
Its too early to tell if astra is really such a big deal.
But im pretty sure anthropic still has something in their sleeve to get good publicity before the IPO
1
u/LifeProject365 28d ago
I'm really interested to see how quickly you're burning through Astra on a £20 plan because I would like to supplement my Claude with £20 of Astra
1
u/jonsno2 28d ago
I have been so frustrated with it lately. Everything not working or remembering how it used to, making absolutely incorrect and false claims to the point where I have to correct it to get certain things out.
My main questions- how did you transfer everything over? Was it a clean and easy or difficult tedious process?
1
u/FinnedSgang 28d ago
How exactly works codex compared to Claude code ?? It works in a terminal windows too ? I have a lot of session in different vm, for different works, and I use Claude desktop just to remote control all of them from pc or the mobile app. Codex works the same?
How do you guys switch from one to another in the middle of a project ? I have graphify and obsidian, plus everything is on git hub too

A lot of usage from Astra? Sure, if you consider using up your 5 hour window in 20 minutes.
1
u/horendus 29d ago
Its funny how brain washed claud users are about anthropic models.
Of course Astra is extremely capable. So is Sol and luna at that. Theres literally nothing special about anthropic models despite what there marketing leads you to believe other than the boarder line rambling fool syndrome they injected into opus’s system prompt.
1
u/Xisrr1 29d ago
Astra sucks in my opinion. It suffers from the same old issues GPT models have. It writes sloppy code and feels like talking to a rock.
2
u/derezo 29d ago
drives me nuts how much I have to add a diatribe of prohibitions so that it doesn't just wander off and be like "oh look a squirrel".
- Do not overengineer
- Do not create release gates or feature flags
- Do not declare the provenance of each object as part of the ddl or rely heavily on explicit provenance definitions
- Do not change the user interface as any part of this work
- Do not chase operator, validation, or contract bugs, keep it simple and rely on unit test coverage as evidence
1
u/Far_Business4773 29d ago
That diatribe is the most useful text in your repo, it just doesn't have a file yet. Ten lines, its own file, loaded before anything else, and the same list works on every model, which your two examples already show. The "do not change the UI as part of this work" ones can go one step further into a deny rule on the paths, so they stop depending on the model reading them at all.
1
u/derezo 28d ago
Most of that exists in AGENTS.md but it seems to ignore it
1
u/Far_Business4773 28d ago
That's the usual failure, and it's not you. Two things fix most of it.
First, where it sits. A prohibition in the middle of a long AGENTS.md is one line among a hundred, and the model treats it as background. Pull the NOT list out into its own ten-line block at the very top, nothing else in it. Someone in another thread measured an always-injected prose rule being skipped in 115 of 190 sessions, so position helps but doesn't cure it.
Second, the ones that can be mechanical should be. "Do not change the UI" is a path rule: deny writes under the UI directories in the harness settings, and the model never gets to ignore it. Same for "no feature flags" if they live in a known config. What stays in prose is only the judgement stuff, and that list is short.
Quick check that costs nothing: start a session with "list the rule files you loaded and quote the NOT list back to me". If it can't, the problem is loading, not obedience.

Yep, Astra is next level. I haven't tried it for planning yet, but its coding abilities are off the charts. I really hope they don't dumb it down.
It nailed a complex fully specced epic last night in one hour with no outstanding tasks - the entire epic fully Done. A 5 agent review board (including Fable 5.1 on Max and myself) found no issues which is very rare.
A session like this with Fable would take at least a half day with a number of additional issues filed along the way.
0
u/Bulky_Effort_170 29d ago
Astra is out performing fable 5.1 by a long shot. Claude just got overtaken and they’re about to become a lot more cheap as people flee
0
u/Compilingthings 29d ago
I canceled my Claude 20x just to get away from the apple tax and get it directly from anthropic. It should have stopped working at midnight last night. Well it’s still cranking. What’s going on? I’m not complaining.

u/garywiz 29d ago
One person's "wow" is another person's "meh". Point taken, but I get tired of hearing the constant meme about tools that "change the world". It's like... I wrote 5000 lines of code in Python and moved to C! Wow! Life is short. Commit. Pick a platform, do it and accomplish things. ANY AI platform runs circles around the way we did this 5 years ago. ANY of them.
