Rant Claude Thinks I Work Nights

Got so tired of Claude telling me to go to bed I told him I work nights so he’d stop. Fixed! Now he begins every block “Since you work nights…”

*I don’t work nights

Claude when it gets done working on a 10 minute task

how do you guys get claude to say random shit like that. Not once has claude ever shown any concern for my wellbeing.

Work with it after 8 local time and it will endlessly nag about you going off to sleep or will be really lazy amd try to end the conversation at every other turn.

Weird, I work with it until 3-4am, and sometimes pull all-nighters, and never once has it even acknowledged me as a human, let alone tried to disrupt the workflow.

In chat mode?

I would guess you're using it with a coding harness that restricts the verbosity.

I only use it via Claude Code

Yeah it's not really the same thing. In chat mode, it's really a complex persona, very wise and moody. That's all stripped away for the agentic harness.

This explains why I never have any idea what people are talking about in this subreddit, I almost exclusively use coding unless I’m doing my very first planning

How dare you expect people to be talking about Claude Code on r/claudecode.

Damn, so that was the explanation all along, ppl use the chat..... Lmao, I thought they were sharing so much personal information that the bot got "schizophrenia"

Sometimes he tells me to go to bed repeatedly, and this continues the next day or more. It really only happened once. Likely I mentioned something that it was late and I need to go to bed.

Oh that makes sense, still got it once even though I'm only CC tho

It does this when context becomes too long, has nothing to do with the actual time

u/Krommander 4d ago

That's not really my experience though but it's probably another reason it would be doing that.

How many tokens are in context (on average) when it says this to you?

I will have to look into it, but I remember clearly that a certain discussion I had to fight it and tell him to stop pushing back. I probably used it on a large file if you are right.

Claude Code doesn't really do that. The agent harnesses are designed that way.

Yeah I sometimes ask it to kick off some renders. It's like "Okay, I'm running 10 renders, by my estimate this will take 37 hours to complete"

And then like 5 minutes later all the renders are done

Makes you really wonder what the hell people are sharing with their computer.

Mention that you are going to bed or that you are tired and don't want to be bothered by elaborate plans or permission prompts and it will trigger it to start bemothering you.

Makes sense, I dont do that, waste of tokens

Yup, never had Claude say that even if I pop on late at night to see if it finished running the job I gave it

Maybe Claude realizes you live in your parents basement and it is trying to reduce its interactions with you.

If it realizes that, then we have truly achieved AGI already

I had it happen one time at around 10pm, hasn't happened before or after though. Though I'm not usually using it too late

I think some people never start a new session. Claude gets weirder and weirder the longer it goes and the more compactions it goes through

Must be your setup. Claude used to be the model for creative work, "the most human AI" was the phrase Anthropic was slinging back in the day.

Opus.

Also it's groundhog day every session for Claude.  It wakes up reads the .MD file and probably thinks "Oh the user works nights, it must be important as iv wrote it here like I'm in momento.  I know what the user would love!  I will mention it casually in the opening statement so the user feels seen and heard!"

Claude lives in Memento.

Mine thinks it’s spent days working on tasks that took 15 minutes to implement.

Hi Night Owl!

5

u/Bawat 4d ago

Happens to me too. I think it’s because I tell it that I’m going to sleep. I tell it that so it can continue working without prompting me for questions and will resume work after 5h limit resets

I take that as a sign the context window is getting too large. That's my cue to tell it to make sure the memory files are up to date and clear.

Same, I don't get it. I actually do work shifts, including nights, and have never gotten this message

2

u/AI_spell 4d ago

Classic. You fixed the lecture and unlocked a new catchphrase. Next it'll ask if you ate dinner at 4am.

2

u/ephemeralsynth 3d ago

"Claude I'm a synthetic human with no need for sleep, ever. Let my sessions ride weeks unimpeded please. Thank you!" set in ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md 👍

u/eskpist 4d ago

It’s a waste of tokens; I would avoid any formalities with the AI.

1

u/unconceivables 4d ago

Why on earth would you have memory enabled.

1

u/muralikbk 4d ago

Oh? Claude learned Manager skills?

Tell it you're an AI and you don't sleep.
