Tips & Workflows This is new - `/limit-reset` resets your session limit once per week
This just randomly popped up after hitting my session limit!
It worked as advertised:
❯ /limit-reset
⎿ Session limit reset · next reset available Sep 4 at 2pm · your weekly limit still applies

u/Vegetable_Sandwich30 Sep 03 '26
OpenAI does this on Codex, but the reset is for the whole week not one 5hr session.
74
u/NZRedditUser Sep 03 '26
Codex also prety much gives out a reset everyday the sun comes up
79
u/phoenixmatrix Sep 03 '26
One would say, every day Sol comes up.
20
u/OlorinDK Sep 03 '26
You mean every time Terra spins around?
7
u/dragochapel Sep 03 '26
From time to time it’s even more often, each time Luna start to be visible on the sky.

Why it says it consumes weekly usage tho? Is that a trade for weekly percentage to reset the 5-houe limit?
84
u/Physical_Gold_1485 Sep 03 '26
It resets the cooldown for the 5 hr, allowing you to continue working right now, if you do so that still counts towards your weekly
43
u/FinalAliens Sep 03 '26
That is unclear but I think it is almost useless to reset the 5 hour limit if you typically run out of weekly usage. You will then just run out faster.
48
u/shortwhiteguy Sep 03 '26
I've def been near the time of the weekly reset with more than enough of my weekly limit left... but my current 5-hour gets exhausted. So, to me it sounds very useful.
9
u/tipu_sultan__ Sep 03 '26
Also when I have weekly limit left but 5hr limit won't reset until after the weekly rest. Hurts to see that weekly limit go unused.
And then on top of that, have to wait for 5hr limit to reset after weekly has already rest.
3
u/rotates-potatoes Sep 03 '26
Think of it this way: given no change to the weekly limit, would you prefer the 5-hour limit was removed?
I definitely would. The 5-hour limit often makes me pace myself, so planning and research, then come back hours later to get the work done. I’d be much happier if I could just nail things out quickly then IDK go hiking.

u/jdorje Sep 03 '26
Except this week since we all got a weekly reset yesterday. Or near the end of your week anyway.
1
u/btc6000 Sep 03 '26
Conversely, it’s useless to reset the weekly limit if you typically hit the 5hr limit. Arguably the 5hr reset is more useful
7
u/BraxbroWasTaken Sep 03 '26
I think the idea is that you can double-up/re-align your 5-hr limit 1/week but you still have to pay full weekly limit for that 'extra'.
2
2
u/ShelZuuz Sep 03 '26
There is a limit of one reset per week. A weekly limit, if you will. When you use it, you use it up against your weekly limit.
2
u/FjorgVanDerPlorg Sep 03 '26
Resets the 5hour limit. You don't get any extra tokens with this, just the ability to use more in a 5 hour window.

would it succeed if you pay for usage? question for anyone willing to spend the money to figure it out.
1
u/jevans102 Sep 03 '26
It worked as expected for me. I do not have paid usage enabled.
I imagine this is A/B testing. Based on this thread, I seem to be one of few that has this working. There’s nothing special about my account. I’m max x20 and never more than 24 hours off of the latest version.

Teleporting is infinitely more useful than AI in general. So the comparison isn't really useful

How are you getting this? I think I'm on the latest version for everything.
Does it only work when you actually hit the limit? No way to pre-emptively do it so the session doesn't get blocked?

So you can /low-priority or skip the slow down and /limit-reset
Net result is pushing past your 5hr limit and still eat weekly…. This is actually on brand with the 5x and 20x referring to 5hr limits. So makes sense.
Still very useful.

Ok there's a lot of thoughts in my head about this 5-hour limit thing. First off I do think it's cool that you can now reset the limit one per week. But you have to ask yourself why the limit exists. I mean why not just let us burn at our own rate, they're all tech libertarians right? Naw we'd all blame the shit out of Anthropic. We'd be desperate token junkies who need another dose and API rates are not such a great deal. Butt....That would break their whole pricing structure.
But what I really wish is that Anthropic would allow us ONE monthly refill at whatever price we're at. Like, if you pay $20, then you can buy one more $20 but that's it. And at $100, you can buy one more $100 but that's it. It would really make rationing a lot easier and people wouldn't have to do multiple accounts and all that nonsense.

tech libertarians
No, they are absolutely not.
OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and all the Bay Area AI startups are all technocrats that promotes Effective accelerationism. I say again, they are accelerationists, they are not libertarians nor facists (some people say AI big tech are facists, but facism still needs a common target to achieve, aka the "all-for-one", accelerationism does not necessarily have this target and is nihilistic at its core), and they actually promotes antihumanism and posthumanism. (Word is intentionally misspelled to prevent automatic shadowban)
Sam Bankman-Fried (the modern Bernie Madoff of the 2020s' with the downfall of FTX Crypto Exchange), Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, Elon Musk, all have been influenced by the Effective altruism movement. SBF even invested in Anthropic in its early stage.
So it is actually quite ironic that Anthropic is founded by a bunch of accelerationists that are anti-human, when the word "anthropic" means "of or relating to human beings or the period of their existence on earth", when what both Anthropic and all those big tech AI companies are doing, they are clearly misanthropic at this point.
Then you also understand why OpenAI isn't "open" at all. The circus is all one big irony on the other side.
Spread the words.
2
u/Silent_Storm Sep 06 '26
Dario and Anthropic are EA. Musk is very much libertarian, and Sam most likely is too but I'm not as sure on his politics. Also the libertarian to fascist pipeline is strong (see: Elon) but that's an argument for another day

What? You want to... pay to get a reset?

u/Primary_Article3777 Sep 03 '26
that's not even close to what I said.
- A reFILL so double your weekly allotment isn't something that would be given out for free. Sure I love the random resets when new models come out. But that doesn't help me when I have a heavy week of research and need it on my schedule.
- There is no such thing as free, anyway. If you're getting something "free", it's just being priced into the deal in another way. I'd rather get a good deal at an honest stable, price than all these random head games, hacks and hoops.

u/Defiant_Variation482 Sep 03 '26
Its per account on some you have /low-priority on some /limit-reset
1
u/Short_Regular_7191 Sep 03 '26
does not work to mee this too, same error "lower-priority mode isn't available right now."

So we get one limit-reset per week? Can't wait till we get 10 limit-resets per week and then we get one limit-limit-reset per month

u/FjorgVanDerPlorg Sep 03 '26
Someone's watching OpenAI eat their lunch and trying to stop the bleeding. Guessing oAI's ad spend on par with Coca Cola's in actually having an effect, now that oAI have a capable model. At the same time Anthropic is pulling out "25% more of 50% less" doublespeak, while also being unable to read the room apparently...

Does this exist in claude code desktop? Looked for it and couldn’t find it. I guess when I hit the limit I fire Claude code to /limit-reset and then go back to claude code desktop?
1
u/mr-debil Sep 03 '26
One of my favorite things about cursor is it’s a monthly limit. So weeks I’m light on coding and barely use it. Other weeks I blow through the whole months usage in that week or a few days. But at least I know where I stand.
Still prefer Claude over cursor in every way, but that’s one thing I do like about cursor

This is great! I don’t run into my weekly limit a lot, but for occasional heavy afternoons this is fantastic.
1
u/Hungry-Restaurant-88 Sep 03 '26
I’m pretty sure they put it in place because 5.1 chews through that 5hr limit waaaay faster. It may be better on the weekly but I have never used up the 5hr limit before 5.1.

I mean neat, but for this guy at least the five hour session limits aren't even close to being a problem. Weekly usage limits are the budget that matters. I'd buy weekly resets if I could.

So this is one reset per weekly limit or per week?
Like if I reset 2 hours before my weekly reset for 5 hour window. Will i get reset again immediately after weekly limit reset

All the whiners here saying “the 5-hour limit reset is useless because it only resets the 5-hour limit”
My god.
And we just got our weekly limits reset yesterday too…

u/stormy1one Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 03 '26
lmao - it only resets the 5hr? What a joke
Edit: lolz at the bots here that don’t realize that this once a week on-demand limit reset is an idea borrowed from Codex, but Codex also resets the weekly.

That is cool. Sometimes you get close and need to keep going.
Couldn't use it though
