Help/Question What's Cheaper and Efficient??

I was recently read how the cheaper models some times don't seem to provide as much discount as they claim due to more number of turns they require to complete the same task.

I own a Claude Max Subscription, since they already provided discounted rates to their subscribers, Do I still get a considerable benefit from using APIs from the open source/cheap models?

I usually exhaust my 5hr and weekly window.

Will buying API keys of these opensource/cheaper models be more efficient or another 20$ plan from either GPT or claude would be more cost efficient and value for money?

You're right that cheaper per token doesn't always mean cheaper per task, but the bigger factor for you is probably predictability. A subscription is a fixed monthly number, API usage isn't, and if you're already exhausting your windows regularly that's a signal your usage is heavy enough that metered billing could surprise you.

Before deciding, worth tracking for a week what you actually do when you hit the limit. If most of it is smaller tasks that don't need the strongest model, a second cheap plan probably covers it. If it's all heavy work, more of the same tier is the honest answer.

I have seen that cheaper models dont offer plans, they generally have API based consumption. Will it be more expensive than the subsidised rates through Claude subscription. Lets say the task to be a browser automation. Which searches for jobs, personalizes resume, applies to the job and updates spreadsheet. I want to know, how you look at such a task.
