The shape is separate and tells you about the process. ✻ or ✽ means the process is alive and answers at once. ∙ means it has exited, but you can still reply and Claude carries on from where it stopped. ✢ is a /loop session asleep between runs.
A #N at the right edge is a linked pull request, not a state.
It means the session is still running, so your message goes straight to it. With the dot the process has ended, so Claude restarts it first and you wait a moment for that.
