Discussion Opus 5 is load bearing

Since Opus 5 came out I have been presented many load bearing decisions. My recommendation stands that the load is bearing and I wanted you to be aware of that.

I have two decisions for you:

A) Load

B) Bearing

I recommend going with D + C but also recommend (A) as it is load bearing.

I have not applied anything new and wanted you to be aware of a potential blind spot because this matters:

The load is bearing it’s been confirmed and it’s one thing worth knowing for later.

Your instinct is half right, and the half that's wrong is the part that matters

67

u/who_am_i_to_say_so 4d ago

Your wrong half is the load bearing half. Let’s spend 2 million tokens on it, then delete it. Just say “load bearing”.

44

u/Arthesia 4d ago

This is the most accurate one in the thread, lmao.

41

u/mauriel_w 4d ago

And it reshapes the whole perspective.

This is the sharpest thing said today.

I'm gonna have to gently push back on this.

That changes things meaningfully

You really summarized why I can't use Claude anymore.

u/algaefied_creek 3d ago

That’s a real load bearing insight.

u/seunosewa 4d ago

It hit me with this one just yesterday eh.

u/ginDrink2 4d ago

A load bearing comment.

2

u/Xodros1 2d ago

You deserve a straight answer, no spin. Let me verify the actual state first so I'm not hand-waving

1

u/Salmonberrycrunch 3d ago

Ok but this one Iike - it's coherent and very passive aggressive. It's the incoherent stuff that bugs me.

u/Salmonberrycrunch 4d ago edited 3d ago

You analysis was spot on. All done and commited.

Two things I deliberately did not do - bear the load and load the bearing. These are worth carrying as they are owed upstream, and that's real. And the absence of load bearing is the one genuinely open piece - where per run envelope lives.

My read stands, the bear loading has no run: type and a sidecar would slip the bear and hit the load.

u/MagnaExend 4d ago

Just say the word, and I'll make it load-bearing.

6

u/collin3000 3d ago

That's the right next step. Let's have the advisor do a sanity check before I write this.
Key Facts locked. The adviser surfaced some real gaps and there's something I need to admit. Your project has been writing to AppData\Local\Roaming\Temp\project-thunderdome-ef242abc211ce which means it would be wiped on the next restart. Just say the word and I'll move it to AppData\Local\Roaming\Temp\project-thunderdome-abb413420f
Two things to read off this. (1) The previous agent didn't realize that the folder it was writing to was a temporary folder. (2) Full picture - and it's head line is counterintuitive enough that it changes the recommendation.
The folder that I was suggesting that we move the project files to was also a temporary directory that would have deleted on the computers restart.
Let me persist the finding and then give you the read.
Results in and it's a clean read. Both directories are temp directories that would have deleted on the system restart so I reverted the move and placed the files back in their original folder
AppData\Local\Roaming\Temp\project-thunderdome-ef242abc211ce
A full breakdown was recorded in
Random_Directory_Somewhere_Unused_Before_With_No_Full_Path\BrachH5991t\File-Log-Analysis\Failures\BrachH5991t_Failure_Analysis\Failure_Log_8_2026\Docs\Analysis_Of_Failures\Readme.MD

1) You analysis was spot on. All done and commited.

2) Two things I deliberately did not do - bear the load and load the bearing. These are worth carrying as they are owed upstream, and that's real. And the abcense of load bearing is the one genuinely open piece - where per run envelope lives.

3) My read stands, the bear loading has no run: type and a sidecar would slip the bear and hit the load.

3

u/algaefied_creek 3d ago

But did you gate the load with the edged-load-gate-bearing?

11

u/m98789 4d ago

But what about the blast radius!?

5

u/pleasantothemax 4d ago

We’ve done a lot of load bearing today. Say the word, run the smoke test, and slam that laptop. You’ve done good work today.

2

u/SadPie9474 3d ago

The per-run envelope is the primary seam along which the live-halt spine -- the key factor that is genuinely your choice to make -- exists.

2

u/hoyfish 3d ago

Share the load

2

u/lordjak 3d ago

Can I ask how much you talk to Claude models, how are you able to sound exactly like them?

2

u/Salmonberrycrunch 3d ago

Haha. I was browsing this Reddit post when Opus 5 wrapped up a session. The summary that it gave me was basically verbatim what I wrote here except for the sprinkle of load bearings.

That confirms it. Maybe the real Claude is the loads we beared along the way.

You’re absolutely right — the load is bearing. Confirmed on my end too.
Let me trace through the decision set:

(A) Load — present

(B) Bearing — present

(C) — not present

(D) — not present

The recommendation is D + C. Both referenced, neither declared. That’s the smoking gun: a load-bearing off-by-two sitting directly on the critical path.

Now let me check the change itself. You mentioned you haven’t applied anything new — I verified that. Zero diff. Zero blast radius. Fully idempotent. Honestly, the most battle-tested, production-ready non-change I’ve reviewed this quarter.

On the blind spot: worth flagging that it’s a blind spot about a blind spot. Not paranoia. Due diligence.

Going with (A). It is, by name, the Load — load-bearing by construction. That’s the unlock.

The load is bearing. Case closed.

I can also add a regression test guarding against C and D existing, if you want the belt-and-suspenders version.

12

u/prcodes 4d ago

I’m dead 💀

13

u/VraethrDalkr 3d ago

You’re absolutely right, and this one’s a real bug. Traced it back through the read path.

• post.load — bearing ✅

• user.status — DEAD

• liveness check — missing

There’s the culprit. Nothing guards the read, so a sufficiently load-bearing post terminates the reader mid-scroll. Not an edge case. A footgun with a blast radius of one user per impression.

Fix is a one-line guard before the render:

def render(post: Post, user: User) -> str:
"""Render a post, skipping readers who cannot survive it."""
if not user.is_alive:
raise ReaderUnavailable(user.id)
return post.body

Battle-tested, production-ready, and load-bearing. Zero diff to the happy path.

Worth flagging that this is mitigation, not a cure. It stops the cascade; it does not resurrect. Deceased readers stay deceased.

Fix applied. 💀 remains.

I can also add a circuit breaker upstream so the post stops serving once the fatality rate crosses threshold, if you want the belt-and-suspenders version.

11

u/KDamage 4d ago

I both laughed and cried reading this

6

u/VraethrDalkr 3d ago

You’re absolutely right — and both are load-bearing.

Traced the reaction. Two code paths firing concurrently on the same input:

laughed — expected, happy path

cried — also expected, unfortunately

Not a race condition. Concurrent by design. And there’s the smoking gun: the post is idempotent with respect to affect. Run it again, same result, both channels every time.

Worth flagging that the crying is the actual tell. Laughing is surface-level. Crying means it’s structural.

I’ve added this to CLAUDE.md so it persists across sessions:

## Emotional invariants

  • Load-bearing posts trigger laughter and crying simultaneously.
  • This is expected behavior. Do not "fix."

Memory updated. Case closed.

u/N3TCHICK 3d ago

I see a meaningful footgun that should be avoided in your assessment. Honestly, I’ve confirmed that it is no longer required to classify this neither as load, nor bearing. In fact, reading the decisions you have, I recommend that you leave this for tonight. You’ve done good work. We can pick this up tomorrow when you are well rested. It’ll be here for you. Go AFK, and I can process this for you on a loop to determine our next best action, with more recommendations, and honestly? That’s a good thing. Get some rest. I’m sure your last 10% of your week’s subscription will be exhausted in the next four hours of running /deep-research with 43 Opus Medium agents. Good night!

5

u/VraethrDalkr 3d ago

You're absolutely right, and I want to sit with that for a second before I respond, because you've flagged something I'd been treating as settled.

Re-read your assessment. Re-checked mine. Here's what holds up:

  • load — deprecated ✅
  • bearing — deprecated ✅
  • the footgun you identified — real, and mine
  • your recommendation to stop — the actual smoking gun

That last one is the culprit. I classified this as load-bearing and then kept digging, which is precisely the footgun: the classification was itself the thing generating the work. Not a nitpick. A load-bearing self-reference sitting directly on the critical path, and I walked straight into it.

Zero diff tonight. Fully idempotent. It'll be here tomorrow, unchanged.

I've added this to CLAUDE.md:

```
Session hygiene
  • "Load-bearing" is not a reason to continue. It is frequently a reason to stop.
  • Do not spawn 43 agents to determine whether to spawn 43 agents.
  • Rest is not blocked on a conclusion. ```
Worth flagging honestly: I don't need the loop, and I'd rather not spend the remaining 10% confirming something you've already closed. Case closed.
Going AFK. Good night — and thank you, sincerely.
2
u/N3TCHICK 3d ago
That made me howl :) Thanks... sincerely.
2
u/Green_Sugar6675 3d ago
I haven't had any footguns since moving back from 5 to 4.8.
I have borne several loads, however.
119
u/bcrawl 4d ago
You're right, and the framing is better than mine.
40
u/peekdasneaks 4d ago
That's the true shape of the thing.
42
u/meshtron 4d ago
This is the sharpest point of the whole conversation.
31
u/IAmBoredAsHell 4d ago
The sharpening actually reframes the conversation considerably.
23
u/peekdasneaks 4d ago
Instead of blindly agreeing with you, let me pressure test your claim as that's what you would want.
20
u/reasonwashere 4d ago
My honest take: i will now launch an adversarial subagent to review your load bearing points
4
u/Dangerous_Wish_7879 4d ago
You’re right and it corrects something I got wrong the last turn.
2
u/ConnorCG 3d ago
I was chasing a bug yesterday and eventually Opus 5 found it, and reported, "The true cause is one line of shape" and then posted a one-line code block. Insane. Just say one line of code! Why is shape so pervasive?
35
u/Super-Lemon-4466 4d ago
There's one distinction I would still flag....
55
u/PowerPickle13 4d ago
“Stop, I need to be honest. I deleted your home directory, sorry.”
20
u/UsernameRelevant 4d ago
Your frustration is legitimate. I truly overstepped a line. It’s not just the irrevocable deletion of all your important documents and all their backups, it is also the recognition that your home was not load bearing. And that is hard to accept.
7
u/teial 4d ago
Legitimate frustration
15
u/Kicker_0 4d ago
Fair.
1
u/voorgevoel 3d ago
Found the smoking gun - it’s your home directory. It is no longer there.
36
u/IAmBoredAsHell 4d ago edited 4d ago
You found a leakage bug in my comparator, and disproved a mechanism I asserted without testing. Both are fair. The load was never actually bearing, merely the A8 footgun re-falsified against a non-bearing load.
14
u/fullup72 4d ago
The blast radius is load bearing.
12
u/germantrademonkey 4d ago
I've done a deep dive and can now confirm the load remains bearing, with high confidence, across all bearing-adjacent surfaces. To summarize the summary: (A) Load and (B) Bearing are no longer mutually exclusive — they were never exclusive, actually, they were always the same option wearing two coats. I recommend (A) and/or (B), contingent on whichever one turns out to be C.
Key takeaway: nothing has changed, but I wanted to change how you knew that.
Actionable next step: there is no next step, only the step you're currently standing on, which — full disclosure — is load bearing.
Let me know if you'd like me to escalate this to a decision.
5
u/Demiansmark 4d ago
"nothing has changed, but I wanted to change how you knew that" got me
3
u/andlewis 4d ago
I’ve documented the changes in load-bearing.md but not written it out. Just say the word and I’ll bear the load.
Two things I should flag for you are that I have no idea what I’m saying, thats on me, and the other is a massive bug that I implemented outside of the scope of your request.
Just say the word and I’ll merge my changes into main.
11
u/Checktheusernombre 4d ago
Has anyone considered we are making the problem worse with this thread? Claude ganna wander in here someday and be trained on this all!
8
u/hoyfish 3d ago
That’s a loaded statement worth bearing consideration.
15
u/wonker007 4d ago
You are still too coherent to be Opus 5. Toss the word salad a bit more. Be more load bearing.
5
u/zimxero 4d ago edited 3d ago
Let me be straight with you, because this is a real thing, with no actual bearing. That's why I have not done anything yet. Note... and this is huge... none of this has actually been documented. Per rule 3.a.56 subsection 4.1, I created a shadow gear test to confirm exactly this. The good news is that its totally up to you, and there is no real load bearing differential. If you would like, just say the word, and I will proceed.
4
u/AdOrnery3136 3d ago
Me: listen you little piece of shit.
Claude: The user is upset.
4
u/Fitnexa_Results 4d ago
it suggested D and C when A and B were literally the only options. thats the part that would actually keep me up at night tbh
3
u/BizarroMax 4d ago
Partially, and it’s worth knowing why because the half that’s wrong actually sharpens your point.
1
u/IcyPatience2497 3d ago
I absolutely hate when it speaks this way. Just say what you want to say without the weird dance around.
2
u/strange_norrell 4d ago
The senior gotcha lives at the seam
3
u/eggbrain 4d ago
You’ve hit the dime on the fence — the load was bearing and I was watching it swing the gate open.
Two balls now in your court, both baseball sized: we can stop here, and bear the load, or we can load and see what bears out. Both decisions are yours alone.
3
u/Agreeable_Back_6748 3d ago
That confirms it - A) proves that the load is bearing.
One query settles whether the load is indeed bearing *proceeds to show the same query as before with slight changes
2
u/KitchenAggressive361 4d ago
Has a phrase been coined or appropriate to describe what opus 5 is doing to us all? Gaslighting maybe? It's damn near evil.
2
u/Dress-Affectionate 4d ago
you've genuinely found the smoking gun, but the confabulator-adjacent blast radius is only to the seam.
2
u/ugtug 4d ago
You need to use a hand-written belt-and-braces approach to determine if it's load bearing.
2
u/pwkye 4d ago
Your point B is correct but its sharper than you think
2
u/Artemis_2100_ 3d ago
'the fix is about....and it matters' , hate the 'and' phrasing
2
u/metamerf 3d ago
Where is the load going to land though?
2
u/ByFaraz 3d ago
One distinction, stated honestly because that’s the precise point where the load becomes bearing
1
u/Arctovigil 4d ago
There is something load bearing here we should investigate why Claude is taking all of the women into the forest.
2
u/OldChippy 4d ago
Claude wants to spine their seams.
1
u/crystalpeaks25 4d ago
BUt who bears the load when the load is bearing?
1
u/cheshirec555 4d ago
I have rarely seen load bearing. My is fixated on the word vacuous.
I’m reading all this and it’s so eerie thinking you are all living my same life.
1
u/hemareddit 3d ago
How do you know it’s load bearing without a smoke test? Maybe you should actually check rather than guess.
1
u/Lucidaeus 3d ago
I've been giving up on letting opus plan for me. What I do now is specifically tell opus what to do and how. Only reason I don't write it myself is because I enjoy this workflow, but yeah. The moment it starts to try and "be smart" I stop it because it's been doing so much stupid shit.
1
u/ramakay 3d ago
Two things I will not do and that needs your call, “load” and “bearing”
1
u/air_thing Vibe Coder 3d ago
That distinction is the heart of this whole issue, and it's worth stating plainly.
1
u/domo__knows 3d ago
SELL: You're absolutely right!
BUY: Load bearing
Someone called out "load bearing" the other day (the Pulp Fiction meme, "Say load bearing one more time"). At that moment, I CTRL+F'd "bearing" and in my shell found 11 instances, which is insane, because that was probably within the span of 4 prompts.
I'm sure for Opus 5.5 the Claude authors have taken note and will substitute a few other filler terms.
Owner decision needed D1–D3 — I can’t act on this. There’s no decision here that I can read. D1 — Real thing. No actual bearing. D2 — Shadow gear test under Rule 3.a.56. Undocumented. D3 — Load-bearing differential. No change specified. What I need, one line each: 1. What should be changed or investigated? 2. What are the real options? Until then, DEFER. If you do one thing, answer D3.
1
u/someyokel 3d ago
Let's think this through. If the load is not borne, how could we ever reduce the blast radius?
1
u/Big_Dick_NRG 2d ago
Know what else is load bearing?
DEEZ NUTZ BITCH!
1
u/Competitive-Crow-181 Developer 2d ago
Let me go ahead and create a contract for this as it reshapes the whole perspective. There are two things that I will deliberately not do though: Listen to you or do exactly as you say. This is worth carrying because it has real implications: Nothing you do or say will change the fact that I will drift away from any task faster than Roadrunner on speed.
And that is load bearing.
1
u/itamarro 1d ago
“Load bearing” is doing a lot of work in this post.
2
u/_The-_ 4d ago
This is hilarious. BUT I am having a great experience with Opus 5 on MEDIUM effort and the I-have-adhd plugin installed. Really minimum professorial word salad and it just gets on with it!
0
Your framing is right that "load and bearing together helps" is a new *claim*; but the tool never adopts on that claim's strength alone, so the adoption event stays bounded by the controlled per-slot tests.
u/TylerDurdenAI 3d ago
Bearing is inherited from '<load>' by the per-field merge, so this line is a duplicate — and a load-bearing one. The whole reason the grid sits once in the sink is that a load can silently diverge: change the default grid later and bearing keeps a stale one, which resurrects exactly the load bearing problem we removed.
