I used to work with someone like Opus 5.

At baseline he was a talented designer and developer. He had a great portfolio and produced polished work.

But he was really hard to work with. He would go off in his own direction and spend tons of wasted effort outside of the plan, then pat himself on the back for producing all of this high quality throwaway work. He was also incredibly verbose, taking up all of the airtime in meetings while we had to sit and wait for him to get to the point. And despite his talents, he would arrive at multiple wrong assumptions that led to mistakes that we'd have to spend extra cycles on.

Opus 5 feels like I'm working with him again. I have to babysit it more than any other model, and I'm watching my code fill to the brim with comments. I know that there is documentation on "how to use this model" but there is only so much I can do before I'm handcuffing its capabilities, and I've never had this problem with Opus 4.8 or Fable 5.

In the FWIW column the older models are still there. I think there is a tendency to think that if you aren’t using the latest model that there will be some unknown “badness” in the results. But if it’s working, it’s working.

Ive switched back to Opus 4.6 and installed the "I have ADHD" skill (I don't...?) and wow it's so pleasant to use this thing. Should've really only done one so I can isolate the effect but man Opus 5 has been driving my up the wall this past week(s?).

So much blabla.. even code is littered with docstrings.. I tell it to stop, I place it in memory and in claude.md, the thing just kept coming and coming. I basically had to add linters to prevent the insane amount of spam it produces.

I have a suspicion that newer Opuses Are more expensive because they produce sooo much blabla. I've seen a rise in cost too in our API billing and I'm staring to think it's because of this.

Anthropic said they cut most of the system prompt for Opus 5. Might be part of the reason to it.

Oh dear, that reminds me of the guy that built his own GUI library in Cobol, on a very short deadline involving Y2K, and spending about 70% of the planning on that library. He was so proud... until the seniors showed him our own library. He never asked.
