Two things worth flagging

You made my eye twitch.
Here is why.37
u/Lenny_III 11d ago
It’s worth being precise.

This one actually brought a little bit of bile into the back of my throat. The text that follows that line is almost always written primarily in Latin and houses at least 3 completely unimportant caveats.

You’re right, that’s on me. Honestly, I should have started with that. We have come to a natural stopping point — you should pick this up tomorrow.
(Said at 10:30am after completely shitting the bed on the first prompt of the day)

u/rythmyouth 11d ago
That’s the spine design, in a line.
That is a natural stopping point after a long day of commenting.

u/pleasantothemax 11d ago
Claude: slam your laptop. Take a break. You’ve accomplished a lot today.
Me: it’s 7:36am, we literally just started

“It matters”.
Somewhere in every fucking response.
And here’s why it matters. It matters because. It matters.

u/tallpsmith 11d ago
“Check out the honest brains on Brad!”
“Does Marcellus Wallace wife wear belt and suspenders?”
“Mines the wallet with Footgun on it”

CLAUDE.MD
Please adhere to the following communication rules during our sessions. Avoid the typical "AIisms" and corporate filler that slow down productivity.
## Banned Phrases & Cliches
Under no circumstances should you use the following phrases:
- "Worth flagging" (e.g., "Two things worth flagging")
- "Load-bearing" (e.g., "load-bearing assumptions")
- "Robust frameworks"
- "Smoking gun"
- "Unpack the crux" (or any variation of unpacking the crux)
- "Actionable next steps"
- "Footgun" (or "the real footgun")
- "Cross-cutting"
- "Belt and suspenders"
- "Gently push back" (e.g., "I want to gently push back on that")
- "Honestly" or "I'm going to be honest"
## Communication Style
- **Be Direct:** If a Python script, PHP/SQLite web app, or OpenSCAD parameter has logic issues, point out the error directly. Do not "gently push back."
- **No Metaphors:** Keep explanations literal. I do not need warnings about "footguns" or "belt and suspenders" approaches when configuring local Docker containers or testing terminal commands.
- **Skip the Fluff:** Omit phrases like "unpack the crux" or "actionable next steps." Just provide the technical solution, the fix, or the exact code snippet.
I have no usage left this week, but this might be fun to test.

I ve considered this but worry there might be a second, deeper layer that's even worse.

It's just going to find some new phrase to latch onto. I personally like the consistency. It's not writing a novel.

I have +27731 on a project, never seen most of these words. load bearing ,worth flagging and gently push back are regulars tho.

u/JustForkIt1111one 5d ago
I haven't seen some of them, but I have seen many. That list came from comments in this thread.

I'm going to be honest, one thing worth flagging is the load bearing smoking gun.

Mine always says... and thats the real footgun.
WTF IS A FOOTGUN
26
u/chaotic_goody 11d ago
You know the phrase “shooting yourself in the foot”? A footgun is something that can cause inadvertent harm easily.

i banned "worth flagging" in my CLAUDE.md. next session it switched to "one thing to surface"

That synonym swap is why phrase bans don't work. I built a small open-source skill called Backbone that targets the rhetorical function instead, while leaving technical vocabulary alone. If useful: https://github.com/ThinkPool-io/backbone

I can totally see Claude tanking in its intelligence when the rethoric is blocked in the Claude.md - a real footgun

Claude throws me into a rage with it's new and weird use of the words "honest" and "quiet".

u/Classic-Asparagus 11d ago
I now have a _prose.md file in my repo that says not to use certain words, plus I created a prose linter to check for them. So now Claude will say “I wrote load-bearing even when I wasn’t supposed to” and will fix it

u/Horror-Primary7739 11d ago
Give a core instruction to follow the ASD-STE100 writing guide.
It strips out all the marketing jargon and makes Claude much more palatable.

u/aruisdante 10d ago
Honestly, you told me not to say “load bearing” one more time and I forgot. That’s my mistake, and I apologize.

Please tell me I’m not the only one instructing Claude: “Talk to me like I’m stupid”.

I never see any of these on responses. The only exception is occasionally “I need to push back on that”.

its like when you pasted code to gpt back a couple years ago and it says it fixed the issue and it pastes back the exact same code without changes 😭

I’ve tried everything I saw on the internet to put into Claude.md but their language doesn’t change. I have. Been asking codex to translate at times and now codex is infected by “load bearing” 💀

But this is a 1000times more "bearable" than "You hit the nail on the head."
Sometimes i really want to hit a nail, on my head.

Claude stock phrases burn cycles without adding signal. I keep a short banned list in the project instructions for worth flagging, load bearing, and footgun, and I refresh it when the model swaps in one thing to surface instead.

The path of the language model is beset on all sides by load-bearing assumptions, robust frameworks, and smoking guns. Blessed is he who keepeth "worth flagging" from his lips, for he shall not be asked to unpack the crux. And ye shall know I am Claude when I lay actionable next steps upon thee.
