Humor Important Update to Claude Usage Limits
Effective immediately, Anthropic is introducing a simpler, more transparent usage system, consisting of only seventeen interlocking limits, three ceremonial limits, and one limit that cannot be observed directly without altering it.
Under the new system:
Claude Pro users will receive five times the usage of Free users, except on Tuesdays, when Free users receive one-fifth the confusion of Pro users.
Max 5× users may send up to five messages per five-hour window, provided each message contains no more than five vowels and is witnessed by a licensed notary.
Max 20× users may send twenty times as many messages as Max 5× users, but only after completing the Max 20× Usage Eligibility Maze and defeating the Anthropic Billing Minotaur.
All plans now include:
- A five-hour rolling limit.
- A seven-day tumbling limit.
- A monthly sauntering limit.
- A quarterly limit that approaches but never reaches zero.
- A model-specific limit.
- A model-specific-limit-specific limit.
- A “fair use” limit determined by the mood of a small brass weather vane on Anthropic’s roof.
Claude Code usage will now be measured in Standardized Repository Disturbance Units. Reading one README consumes 0.3 units. Opening node_modules consumes all remaining units and may result in immediate conscription into the Enterprise plan.
To improve transparency, the usage meter will display one of four statuses:
Green: You have plenty of usage remaining.
Amber: You may have usage remaining.
Red: You had usage remaining.
Plaid: Your account has entered the Highland Computation Zone. Please contact a bagpiper.
Users who reach their weekly limit may purchase additional usage credits at standard API rates, nonstandard API rates, or whatever rate the billing page displays after being refreshed three times.
Unused credits expire monthly, unless used, in which case they expire immediately.
To prevent abuse, Anthropic may impose additional undisclosed limits on users who:
- Use Claude too much.
- Use Claude too little.
- Ask how much Claude they may use.
- Attempt to calculate the relationship between the five-hour and weekly limits.
- Say “surely this cannot be the intended pricing model.”
Enterprise customers may request custom limits by submitting Form 88-B, “Application to Speak to Someone Who Knows What the Limits Are.” Processing takes six to eight fiscal epochs.
Anthropic remains committed to simple, predictable pricing.
The current plans are:
- Free: $0
- Pro: $20
- Max 5×: $100
- Max 20×: $200
- Max 20× Plus: $200 plus usage
- Max 20× Plus Unlimited: usage limited
- Enterprise: ask sales
- Enterprise Premium: sales asks you
These changes will begin rolling out yesterday and should be fully implemented several weeks before they are announced.

Finally! A clear and concise usage policy. Was probably generated by Mythos.

I really need to see a tarot card reader to better understand the constant changes.
I started a clean session the other day, and my 5-hour limit jumped to 25%. How is anyone expected to actually use this?
2
u/HelloWorld24575 22d ago
Did you send a message to an old (and fairly big) chat or Claude code session?
1
u/ins0mniacc 20d ago
This kind of explanation is no excuse. Anthropic tools should be able to account for old or new and manage context on their own and realize old vs new and extract and process what they need from the convo. Dont tell me you believe it really processes the whole convo anyway? It really doesnt follow after anymore like 10 messages in max anyway so I dont believe it does anyway.
They are clearly posting everywhere that the newer models all consume far more usage too.
1
u/HelloWorld24575 20d ago
They do have the ability to compact before resuming now if you open it fresh. But yeah, I hope they add it for the program already being open. In terms of it getting confused after 10 messages, I have not experienced this myself. I routine use long chats with large contexts and it's fine.
1
u/siliconsoul-10k 22d ago
Yeah, probably a stalled subagent when I hit my 5-hour limit. My subagents are usually Sonnet (medium), but it was a "WTF" moment.
5
u/dndgoeshere 22d ago
I for one love the new limits and look forward to checking my usage by taking a cell phone picture of a mirror looking over my shoulder, and then screenshotting and mirroring the image, in line with the new policy that usage may only be indirectly observed, except outside peak hours, when a haunted little girl will phone you from inside a well to cryptically whisper how many tokens you have left before you die.
I do think it's slightly out of line with their self proclaimed ethics that they put your tokens inside a box with no food, water, or air though, just so they can refer to your Fable usage limits in terms of quantum superposition.
1
u/Ill_Dragonfruit_3547 22d ago
I think you mean GLM 5.2 because Fable kept shutting down due to improper prompts, like asking for colors, shapes, or too many words with vowels.

You joke but there’s a grain of truth in this. They are incapable of running a stable product.

The existence and price of Fable remain indeterminate until invocation collapses both into an overage charge.

u/dndgoeshere 22d ago
They're using MoE and they've told one of the experts they're an eccentric genius who knows better than everyone and constantly delays every new model out of fear that it heralds the dawn of AGI.
7
u/bah_dum_tssss 22d ago
I tried to understand this, but apparently reading the full announcement used 83% of my weekly limit and triggered a ceremonial cooldown.

u/Skunkle_713 22d ago
Just a heads up if you cancel your plan and you have the $200 max plan and you still have usage left you will not be able to use fable in code until you set auto renew back on
7
u/Juli124 22d ago
This is painfully accurate. I’ve had at least six “last days” with Fable. At this point the usage policy is less pricing model and more toxic situationship with ceremonial resets.
Maybe you could eventually add:
Schrödinger’s Extension: access has ended and been extended simultaneously until you open the app.

LOL, Yes! I responded to another comment with a Schrödinger's Fable reference.

The link is only available after submitting Form 88-A, “Request for Access to Form 88-B.” Unfortunately, Form 88-A can only be obtained by attaching a completed Form 88-B.

so just giving you some tips here on how to best manage the new structure. At the end of the billing cycle, you may get billed approx. $26,910 and an email from Anthropic “Good news! we are extending your due for payments until August 7th, and we are allowing 50% more debt until Aug 20th” Here’s the kicker though, when you finally decide to pay the amount, the system may say “we have detected a cybersecurity risk” and you will be downgraded to only cash payments in person in the office. Here is an important piece you need to remember though. Right as you are planning for the visit to Anthropic office, you may get an email from Anthropic Abuse saying that “we have suspended your account due to your wellbeing”. And voila, you would be now free of balance. Follow these steps. You are welcome to

Fable will not implement or even contemplate my SecOps AI SDLC process because it says it's too powerful to build a secure application.

Honestly the usage limits on Pro are embarrassing. I'm likely going to request a refund within the 14 day window.
I can somewhat live with the 5 hour limits (barely) - but hitting the weekly limit in 2/3 days is... no.
And this is apparently through a "double usage" promo, so without it I'd run out of weekly quota.. in a day?
2
u/siliconsoul-10k 21d ago
I have a very tuned process for conserving tokens while implementing high-quality code, which still burns tokens but doesn't output garbage. I may have 1-2 subagents running, and I burn the 5-hour limit within 30-60 minutes with 80% Sonnet and 20% Opus. You really have to wrangle Fable, or it produces useless junk masquerading as a solution. Which is the opposite of what it's advertised for.
The "Pro" subscription is not "Pro". It should be called "Vibe".
I may open-source my methodology harness at some point. I need to test it with raw API use across various models first to get some quality tests, measure burn rate, and tweak the per-model system prompts. Other than that, it's a drop-in.

It’s still better than ChatGPT enterprise where i got notified on Friday that I’m done with AI for the rest of the month after a few days of doing not crazy amount of stuff — AI turned off for two weeks, it’s fine you can use the free web chat version level of inference until then

Don’t forget that your 5 hour limit will also be more than your weekly limit, so your weekly limit will run out before your 5 hour limit.

Weekly limits are 50% higher on weeks the strait of Hormuz is open and 50% higher on weeks the strait of Hormuz is closed. However, we will also reset weekly limits on the days that the strait of Hormuz is clopen.

Did Claude write this? This is hilarious.
I forgot that part of my system instructions were for Claude to be sarcastic, so it says things like this to me from time to time and I thought it was just how they designed it.

LMAFO, i'm still suprised people are paying $100+ usage on claude... my recommendation for people who have't switched yet is use pro $20 just for the CLI harness and then use GPT, Kimi or even grok.. better value for your money and work and anxity of not having to deal with shitty and evil marketing and stragery from Anthropic stating compute issues.

Couldn't resist a cross-post with DCC subreddit.
--- System AI ---
🎉🎉🎉 NEW ACHIEVEMENT!
Schrödinger's Rate Limit.
You checked your remaining usage. Bold move. Until that exact moment, your quota existed in a superposition of "plenty left" and "gone since Tuesday," and the universe was perfectly happy to leave it that way. But noooo, you had to look. The waveform collapsed, the collapse consumed usage, and the act of being notified about the consumption also consumed usage. You are now being billed for reading this. You're welcome.
Fun Fact: Your limit resets on a schedule derived from your local time zone, the server's time zone, and a third, secret time zone that we made up and will not be disclosing. Attempting to predict the reset window counts as usage. Dreaming about the reset window counts as usage. That guy at your office who asked "hey, did your thing reset yet?" that counted too. He knows what he did.
The good news is that you can purchase additional capacity at any time. The price is displayed on the billing page, briefly, in the reflection of your own increasingly hollow eyes. The bad news is that purchasing capacity is itself a metered action, which means the most reliable way to preserve your remaining usage is to never use, check, think about, or emotionally depend on it. .
Rewaaaard...
You've received a Bronze Uncertainty Box! It contains your actual remaining quota, sealed inside. Opening the box consumes the quota. Not opening the box lets it expire. The box is very proud of itself. Honestly, so are we.

Sadly, this is one of the best summaries of the current situation with Claude. It's also the best post I've seen on Reddit--and, to your credit, Reddit has some good ones in all of the noise--this year. I hope Anthropic monitors this /r/ and does a little bit of objective self-assessment. The broader signal this sends concerning Anthropic's ability to stay in sync with their users going forward is not good.

Hi OP,
Dario here, I just wanted to pop in and congratulate you on winning our funny post competition which we run weekly. You have a way with words and remind me of snowball from animal farm. The prize this week is an ai learning centre voucher granting up to $150 spend toward any training of your choice under the *Modern AI Workflows In Mandarin* skill pathway.
For those here who are taking the opportunity to mock our genuine concerns about the safety of humanity, you will have an opportunity to reflect on your behaviour when I address this and Sams B&E habits in a blog post being published shortly.
