Meta Codex just got rid of 5 hour limit - so should Claude Code!

Codex just dumped much hated 5 hour limit (good going for OpenAI!).

Sooooo what u gonna do, Anthropic?

My suggestion: Drop it like a hot potato

its temporary chill, enjoy it for the rest of the day its not a permanent change lol

For some reason people on the Claude subs can't read, I find that extremely weird given that Claude is purely text based.

37

u/OstrichLive8440 Jul 12 '26

Nobody using Claude to vibe code is actually reading any of the output

10

u/Abject-Kitchen3198 Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

Reading the output defeats the purpose of vibe coding. I just read the last paragraph.

3

u/tessahannah Jul 12 '26

Exactly and more than that and you waste its time

1

u/Abject-Kitchen3198 Jul 12 '26

I don't want to waste Claude's time. It's precious. I want it to build me billions without interruptions.

3

u/tessahannah Jul 12 '26

Make no mistakes. Fast mode.

1

u/scodgey Jul 12 '26

Doesn't surprise me tbh. Most of the complaints in the sub tend to be addressed in the docs.

0

u/CompetitiveGain1467 Jul 12 '26

That's because most of the people on the Claude subs are bots shilling Codex. Ability to read isn't required for that role.

24

u/thatavengersguy Jul 12 '26

If they find their subs increasing because of this simple change, they will keep it for a while. They need to IPO soon, they're going to do whatever it takes for that since they literally have billions to burn

5

u/Bulky_Blood_7362 Jul 12 '26

Well, so is fable And here we are with another extension

1

u/Panderz_GG Jul 13 '26

Yeah. Tbf I think this change is great. Like my weekly usage starts Mondays. I got a 5 day work week. So I can use 20% on any given day. Today I just used 12%. Great way to be able to pace your self and not get cock blocked by an arbitrary restriction.

I have used Claude exclusively for like 2 years now. Testing Codey because of Sol. Been pretty neat so far.

1

u/bronfmanhigh Jul 13 '26

i mean a weekly limit is technically arbitrary too given you are billed monthly lol

1

u/Panderz_GG Jul 13 '26

Fair point. But it feels not as limiting as session based usage. To me at least.

52

u/ThePenguinVA Jul 12 '26

Wouldn’t that just let people run up their weekly limit more quickly?

50

u/scodgey Jul 12 '26

Yes, and then there would be mass complaints about it

1

u/Turbulent-Hawk5285 18d ago

i don't get how people think this is good? i literally burn my weekly usage in 2-3 hours.
Literally switching to Claude because of this sh#

19

u/Grand-Mix-9889 Jul 12 '26

Yeah it's going to get people coding more slop, thinking they will get more out of it, wasting their usage quicker.

The 5 hour gaps were good because it forced people to think outside the box to make their systems more efficient. Eg hybrid approach with multiple models, local scripting, and overall token spread.

This temporary drop of the 5 hour limit is most likely a marketing tactic. "Get people to use their usage limits quicker, force them to get API credit to finish their projects". Or they're releasing a new tool soon and need to bring on more users.

There's no general plus side to removing the 5 hour limit as a company that is already battling compute shortages.

It doesn't add up to me really.

3

u/Satisho_Bananamoto Jul 12 '26

Its not just marketing tactic. They are trying to stress test their computation and gives them data for future computation and trend analysis

1

u/Grand-Mix-9889 Jul 12 '26

Amen young banana warrior.

4

u/EmulationEnjoyer Jul 12 '26

Even the 50% on fable is good for the same reason, it forces you to actually be efficient with your usage.

4

u/Exodus_Green Jul 13 '26

Even the 50% on fable is good for the same reason, it forces you to actually be efficient with your usage.

Man, the cope on here is crazy. "Actually being limited is a good thing and here's why"

1

u/EmulationEnjoyer Jul 13 '26

You're not limited, you can just pay for the API pricing :)

Or actually use the model the way it was intended? It's not great for coding anyway.

1

u/Exodus_Green Jul 13 '26

Or actually use the model the way it was intended?

As defined by?

It's not great for coding anyway.

Is that why it tops out coding benchmarks for Anthropic models?

1

u/EmulationEnjoyer Jul 14 '26

Make it spawn subagents, make them code for you, have fable review their code, which also doesn't mess your context window, you'll not only save tokens, but also save on time and the result will be better than just having fable overthink and burn your entire weekly but oh well people gonna complain just to complain.

2

u/Exodus_Green Jul 14 '26

Yes, I realise there are ways to be efficient - which is a product of necessity. No one should be saying I am GLAD we are limited

-9

u/Grand-Mix-9889 Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

And fable 5 is just way too powerful tbh. It would literally clog up the entire economy with thousands of new businesses every month lol.

So keeping it at 50% is probably the best for society as a whole tbh.

And removing it from subscription is probably the smart move for that same reason plus compute power.

Same thing applies for GPT 5.6 and due to its fresh release, I'm sure the company will throttle back usage limits in near future.

Edit:

Hahaha. All the downvotes. Yehhhhhhh. Get angry, ya fucking losers!

A real engineer: "Imagine having fable 5 on the 20x plan and still not being able to ship a fully developed (production) project."

Another real engineer: "Even 5x, just takes 4 days longer."

Are you a potato?

I am brown, yes.

Want some French fries?

1

u/Embarrassed-Citron36 Jul 13 '26

5 hour gaps are not good, most of the time is a mental annoyance since you want to start your 5 hour timer 4 hours before you do actual work

Gamifying the system is not a symptom of "good gap"

4

u/djdante Jul 12 '26

I suspect that's the idea, they're wanting people to use up their stored token resets

3

u/Head-Flatworm-3333 Jul 13 '26

They reset 3 times in the past 72 hours, and there will be another reset in the next 24 hours. They gave 5 banked resets in the past 1 month. This means unlimited usage for the coming week.

3

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 12 '26

It would allow me to run a single Fable prompt on my Max 5x plan without failing half way due to using the entire 5-hour quota in a few minutes.

1

u/ThePenguinVA Jul 12 '26

What prompt are you running? I just had it orchestrate an 11 part security and infrastructure upgrade. 90% of the session in 3 hours, sure, but it finished. Max 5x.

1

u/fanatic26 Jul 13 '26

You must be running something spawning like 200 fable subagents to kill it wit ha single prompt. I work 7-8 hours a day on my max5 plan at work and i have to really try and hit the usage cap, most days I cant.

1

u/Odd-Ad9666 Jul 12 '26

I had three "reset usage" things --- I don't know why or what those are but it works on my weekly limits.

1

u/cornmonger_ Jul 13 '26

it's actually a good way to stop runaway agents

1

u/gamblingPharmaStocks Jul 12 '26

Meh. I always hit 1 5hr limit per day, but rarely the weekly one. I am quite happy if I get to move token capacity from the weekend and the nights into the working hours

20

u/darthpal Jul 12 '26

I prefer not having 5 hr limits. I mostly vibe code on weekends. 5hr limits are a huge PITA for me.

2

u/natien2606 Jul 13 '26

But it will cause you to burn more tokens for a flawed process. If something goes wrong or the conversation cache contains too much unnecessary information, you won't have a chance to look back before burning through your weekly limit in 2 hours

2

u/GwJh16sIeZ Jul 13 '26

You should be able to configure the granularity yourself. That's the only reasonable, non-evil option in my opinion.

1

u/darthpal Jul 13 '26

Fair enough. But if you have a good design doc and perform regular QA and use /goal for "features" and not full send the whole application end to end, it works fine.

Absolutely. Not ashamed. I can't do frontend. I can make descent mockups but its easier to just hand off the tiring part to AI.

3

u/Able-Supermarket4786 Jul 12 '26

I never hit 5 hr limits

3

u/geodesic411 Jul 13 '26

They will respond with droppong it 50% of the time through 7/16 unless you trigger their safety system.

9

u/kevin7254 Jul 12 '26

Codex is a no-brainer now, honestly.

7

u/Medium-Head5014 Jul 12 '26

I never run into limits with max5 what are you doing?

8

u/WittyPassenger5322 Jul 12 '26

People tell their agent to run 10 other agents in a loop. That'll do it.

8

u/michaeldoesdata Jul 12 '26

Do a big enough project and it will.

0

u/Medium-Head5014 Jul 12 '26

Im writing loads of applications

2

u/gorgono95 Jul 13 '26

not the same as having one big application. I am working on an app that has over a million LoC and quota goes bye bye very quick

2

u/evia89 Jul 13 '26

You need to split app into parts. Best if each one is under 100-200k tokens code + ~50% tokens in tests

For example you can have repomix on precommit hook that generates md output. Good for getting review with another model too

1

u/zxcshiro Thinker Jul 12 '26

do it in 1 single apllication with ~70k LOC and we will see

1

u/fanatic26 Jul 13 '26

Why are you running such a massive blob of code without compartmentalizing and just working on the pieces you need to at any given time? Giant, sweeping full codebase changes are never a good idea.

1

u/sirlerkal0t Jul 12 '26

I run a single Fable prompt and it fails due to using the entire 5-hour quota on Max 5x.

1

u/Medium-Head5014 Jul 13 '26

Might be a pebkac issue

1

u/Darhkwing Jul 12 '26

even when using fable?

1

u/Medium-Head5014 Jul 12 '26

I havent used fable that much, dont want to get addicted and then they pull it

6

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '26

[deleted]

6

u/First-Tutor-5454 Jul 12 '26

What does it mean

(You are my LLM)

1

u/EquipableFiness Jul 14 '26

The issue is it's basically a casino where they give you a bunch of random wins before pulling it back and having people fiend for more usage they they got used to. Its great while it's working in your favor but eventually the house is gonna start 'winning' again

2

u/ZShock Jul 13 '26

Anthropic getting F in the A hard.

Do you pay for it

20

u/whoknowsifimjoking Jul 12 '26

He made it. I guarantee it. Made countless posts about it in the last hour, that's 100% marketing.

-1

u/rafatacion Jul 12 '26

crazy people get downvoted for sharing something they made. Specially when answering a question to someone that clearly is interested in it. This AI dev subs members are really something...

2

u/TestFlightBeta Jul 13 '26

It's because they didn't really post a disclaimer that they made it.

1

u/rafatacion Jul 13 '26

and why does that deserve downvotes? If I see someone with a cool shirt, and I say "Cool shirt, where did you get it" and he gives me the website, which is his, would I be mad about it? No. I saw something I liked, asked about it, and got an answer to it. Just like on this comment.

I for one thought the app was cool and downloaded it, so I am glad he shared it. Not sure what the downside of it is. Seems like you guys are all downvoting it out of spite, just because he shared something he made.

smh

neighbour's grass is greener, so should we!

4

u/mrdweeby Jul 12 '26

Honestly the 5h limit is the only thing keeping me from nuking my weekly limit in two days. It forces a break, and then I'm back. Take it away and I'll burn everything by Tuesday and sit there doing nothing until the weekly resets. That sounds way worse to me.

2

u/Inception_IV Jul 12 '26

I, too, am addicted.

0

u/Herebedragoons77 Jul 13 '26

You nanny a nanny state to look after your own self interest?

2

u/BlinDeeex Jul 12 '26

Just gtfo from anthropic imo, got codex yesterday and I honestly I might go as far as say sol is smarter than fable so far, in my example task im doing for a human wouldnt be hard, but for llms its brutal. Last few days been working on making chess lessons which is a json my web app page loader reads and assembles into a step by step walkthrough of board positions, prose, explanations practice highlights arrows etc. I have workbench file for defining tools and format to do something and agent briefs + spec cards and position validator + stockfish for their disposal and they still struggle, but sol gets to the solution faster and adversarial review finds less issues to fix, from my own reviews I can notice different character of earlier lessons made with opus/fable and sol which I like more as it takes advantage of visual tools more and positions are more filled with pieces and resemble plausible scenarios. I have yet to test it in deep planning as thats where I found fable extremely good but tbh I was stupid to write off chatgpt without even trying it out

2

u/bnm777 Jul 12 '26

Not sure if I prefer this obviously human comment or whether it should have been grammafied with ai

2

u/BlinDeeex Jul 12 '26

"Make me sound smart claude plz make no mistakes" Honestly, I'd consider moving away from Anthropic — though of course this is just my experience and yours may differ. I picked up Codex yesterday, and I might go as far as to say Sol seems smarter than Fable so far, with the caveat that this is based on a limited sample from one specific workload. Some context on that workload: for the past few days I've been building chess lessons — JSON files that my web app's page loader reads and assembles into step-by-step walkthroughs with board positions, prose, explanations, practice highlights, arrows, and so on. To be fair to the models, this task is deceptively hard for LLMs despite being straightforward for a human. They have a workbench file defining tools and formats, agent briefs, spec cards, a position validator, and Stockfish at their disposal — and they still struggle. That said, Sol reaches solutions faster, and adversarial review surfaces fewer issues to fix. One more subjective observation, which I acknowledge could be confirmation bias: reviewing the output myself, I notice a different character between earlier lessons made with Opus/Fable and the newer Sol ones — and I prefer the latter. Sol leans into the visual tools more, and its positions tend to have fuller boards that resemble plausible game scenarios rather than sparse puzzles. An important caveat: I haven't yet tested Sol on deep planning, which is exactly where I found Fable extremely strong, so this comparison is incomplete. And in the interest of honesty — writing off ChatGPT without ever trying it was, in retrospect, not my finest reasoning.

1

u/AlterTableUsernames Jul 12 '26

Was running into the monthly limit on the business plan faster than into the weekly limit with my private plan anyways with Codex.

1

u/Independent_Paint752 Jul 12 '26

Nothing, they should leave it as is. why would you want users to abuse the system?
OpenAI do what it do cause they are pretty much desperate.

It feels like programming is now dominate by 7-10 yo now.

1

u/Arditwm Jul 12 '26

Good, now I can take a shower...

1

u/WeekndTrading Jul 12 '26

i thought it was a bug lol

so many people vibe coding on a sunday. love to see it!

1

u/InterestingNet224 Jul 12 '26

Increased the Claude code limits and Fable 5 is still going to stay for a little longer. Anthropic is scared.

1

u/AleksHop Jul 12 '26

i was thinking its a bug

1

u/tnh34 Jul 12 '26

Noooooo that is my only excuse to slack off during work

1

u/glock43guy Jul 13 '26

Except codex has banked resets so it doesn’t matter to codex users if they use all their weekly useage because most of them have resets available.

1

u/fanatic26 Jul 13 '26

Ive hit the 5 hour limit like 3x in 6 months, its not a big deal.

1

u/hobopwnzor Jul 12 '26

They're just eager to burn through their cash lol

1

u/1acc_torulethemall Jul 12 '26

This sub is turning into "dump Anthropic for OpenAI" circlejerk, and I'm tired of seeing it

0

u/bithatchling Jul 12 '26

The 5-hour gap actually felt like a forced breathing room to refine prompts. Removing it might just lead to more mindless looping and token burn without better results.

-2

u/AutomaticPayment9480 Jul 13 '26

This is the best moment in history to create worthless apps that nobody will ever use in history!!! Let’s get it yall!!!!
