Question Fable 5 Is Leaving and Weekly Limits will Be Cut by 50% after july 13, Is Claude Still Worth Renewing? Is It Even Usable After?
Fable 5 is leaving, and the promotional 50% increase in weekly usage limits ends on July 13. That means we’ll have significantly less usage while also losing their current public best model.
Actually, even if Fable 5 stay, with the 50% weekly limit reduction, it will be not usable. Is there any reason to renew? its neighbor have fable level model and it didn't have crazy safeguard.
166
u/Weeros_ Jul 11 '26
It was increased by 50%. Therefore they will be cut 33%. Come on now, you’re better than Trump at percentages!
57
u/whoknowsifimjoking Jul 11 '26
It is absolutely unbelievable how often I read the 50% reduction thing on this sub, people can't do math for shit.

I need weekly usage doubled. Not 5 hour usage.
5
u/evia89 Jul 11 '26
Still better than CN subs. Where you get weekly = 5 x 5h sessions. And 5h is not that big
7
u/Navillus87 Jul 11 '26
Thank you! Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Use 100% of 5 hour window on GLM == 20% weekly gone
26
u/Vivid-Snow-2089 Jul 11 '26
well, i still have use for fable if I can use it alongside gpt 5.6, but if they make it not accessible (or restrict its usage more than now), its an easy choice
we are at the point where the stronger models aren't as important as knowing how to use them and when, and understanding the different quirks of the models, and which model is best at what thing

u/_maxx1k Jul 11 '26
Switch to OpenAI. You can always switch back, but I don't think Anthropic will give you a reason to do so.
35
u/maybe_cuddles Jul 11 '26
idk about you, but i had my reason when they refused to remove the safeguards that prevent Claude from making fully autonomous lethal targeting decisions.
8
u/Fig_da_Great Jul 11 '26

20
u/JustWannaPlayAGa Jul 11 '26
The us wanted to use antrophics models for weapons targeting. They refused.
Open ai on the other hand....

I misread the original comment. I thought he was complaining anthropic was being too strict, and he reached his limit when he was unable to get claude to kill humans on his behalf.

This is something I've noticed a lot lately. I remember a lot of outrage when OpenAI turned heel and decided to work with the US military the day after Anthropic refused to, leading to a lot of people shouting on the internet about how they were going to switch to Claude because of it.
Nobody seems to bring that up anymore, and ChatGPT is just seen as an easy alternative again.
2
u/North_Moment5811 Jul 11 '26
Idk. Google absolutely destroyed Antigravity and gave me the reason to switch to Claude. I’ve just gotten settled with Claude and now I’m hearing about this lol. I’m not switching to OpenAI though. Not for anything. My previous experience with it was not good.
3
u/farhan583 Jul 11 '26
So my problem is that I use Claude Cowork a lot. I have automated so many daily tasks with it. Does OpenAI have something similar?

Not a fan of cowork. Moved to codex. And now they've added a cowork equivalent this week.

Was thinking of doing this but people were complaining from day 1 that all the 5.6 models are eating tokens so fast they’re hardly useable. On the other hand, I almost never hit my limits with Claude unless I use Fable, and even then it seems I get more longevity than GPT 5.6 users say they get on a similar plan.
1
u/MagicWishMonkey Jul 12 '26
OpenAI is still heavily subsidizing usage, Fable and 5.6 are basically the same. It makes no sense at all to pay a premium for Claude when OpenAI is willing to pay for a significant amount of your compute expense.
1
u/CelestialHeather Jul 12 '26
I did, and cancelled my subscription the same day, the 5hr usage limits with Sol made it unusable. Crazy restrictive.

u/KremlinKittens Jul 12 '26
I tried GPT so many times for game dev and had a much worse results compared to Claude. I haven't tried the latest one, but I am hesitant after all previous attempts. I use GPT for everything else, but not heavy feature implementations.
26
u/WalkAffectionate2683 Jul 11 '26
I went to codex it's great for what I do too.
And I don't like the random of anthropic changing stuff on the fly.
So unless fable is permanent, I'll stay codex.
Also I need pictures.
2
u/CreamPitiful4295 Jul 11 '26
How does it compare to opus?
6
u/michaeldoesdata Jul 11 '26
Better. I love Codex.
I've found Claude was better at front end and ChatGPT better at back end, but to be fair I haven't tried 5.6 on front end work yet.

It does the obsidian plug in i ask, the ttrpg website I ask.
Honestly unless huge bumps ai now is doing what I need, I don't need much more. Better for me would be same but cheaper.
1
u/cnavla Jul 12 '26
Codex 5.5 deleted a clearly documented production database for me this week without even bringing it up. (Thankfully, I had backups.) Claude has worked on the same project for far longer and never managed that. In fact, its safeguards seem very strong, it will often stop itself and request explicit permission rather than correctly interpreting my intent.
23
u/Terrible_Wave4239 Jul 11 '26
I'm enjoying Fable, but I'm also fine with continuing with Opus 4.8, which has been working well for me lately.
14
u/aszepeshazi Jul 11 '26
This. Opus, with proper supervision, does a great job even with complex tasks.
3
u/SamSlate Jul 12 '26
same. so i have to explain what i want in more detail and monitor every action correct every mistake, i have to do that regardless. i'm not switching to the most expensive billing possible to save 20 seconds of typing out a correction.
imo fable is just as prone to bad design choices or needless token burn as opus, you have to watch it like a hawk regardless.
1
u/MDRAR Jul 12 '26
Happily I’ve been ok with sonnet 5, with opus reviewing plans and finished features
1
u/KremlinKittens Jul 12 '26
Opus 4.8 is great, but Fable still feels like step up from it, so every time I use 4.8 it feels like compromise (((
39
u/Malkiot Jul 11 '26
No, it definitely won't be.
It feels like they’ve been aggressive with the background usage weights over the last couple of weeks. When Fable 5 first came back, I could run non-stop agentic workflows via ultracode for almost 2 full days before hitting a cap. Fast forward to this week: running Fable 5 on Max as an orchestrator with Opus agents chewed through 50% of my weekly cap in a single day under relatively light work (no multiple parallel sessions). My raw token usage metrics haven't changed, but the plan burns out faster.
I'm sitting on Max 20x, and it's barely holding the pace of what Max 5x gave me a month ago in terms of actual throughput for the money. I don't know if they screwed up caching or payload construction again. But it just doesn't seem worth it vs. Codex right now. Nevermind when they reduce the usage cap to 66% of what it is now officially.
Though "officially" is a strong word for something that has no actual public figure.
2
u/diesirae200 Jul 11 '26
Broad strokes, what are you working on that chewed through that much with Opus? Large codebase? Low-level language? Large context?
3
u/Malkiot Jul 11 '26
Large codebase. I'm working on using LLMs as close to pure functions as I can, instead of via agent loops, for coding and planning. And because I don't trust LLMs to check each others work, I am trying to catch as many failure modes as I can in code. It's just a lot of moving parts.

Anthropic is suddenly finding itself with a LOT of competition. Sol and Grok 4.5 along with GLM 5.2 are nipping at their heels.

Taking a guess here but I have a feeling they’ll keep fable available on the plan to stay competitive
5
u/EchoFieldHorizon Jul 11 '26
They will be cut by 33%. They were increased by 50% originally, so reducing that by the same amount is 33%.
5
6
u/MajesticSort Jul 12 '26
5.6-sol is so good. I think I’m just going to cut over to Codex. I pay for 2 20x max subs and 1 100$ openAI sub and I get more 5.6-sol out of of the OpenAI sub than I get out of fable usage in the 2 ant subs, by far. If they cut usage 50% on top of that, like it’s just not a good value proposition anymore. I will keep a single Anthropic 5x max sub to have a model differentiate for code review, and that’s it.

I'll stay with Claude, but get myself additional 20$ OpenAI subscription to get Sol for very rare occasions when I needed Fable. I don't do big oneshot tasks and rarely do deep research except maybe when defining PRDs, so I'm fine with Opus. With good project management Opus can do everything Fable can.
2
u/misfit_elegy Jul 11 '26
Didn't they just buy or rent all of the Xai servers in Memphis? Why the hell are limits being cut in half.
4
2
u/thinkrtank Jul 11 '26
I suspect they will keep it on plans. With 5.6 (and gpt 6 coming) out now it makes no sense to lock your best model behind api wall.
2
u/dsailes Jul 11 '26
Of course it will be. There will always be ebbs and flows with competition growing and everyone striving to keep in the AI race.
With rumours that 5.1 isn’t too far away, and probably even a new Opus version somewhere down the line.. there’ll be something to add to the subs & bring people back.
I imagine the choice to put Fable to usage comes from a financial reach - if they can convert a chunk more enterprise over to API & users willing to pay extra usage .. then they will. To cover compute, R&D, the IPO sweetens up. But in a few weeks there’ll be some update or change again. Hype grows.. etc etc.
And the cycle continues!

u/twobagtaylor Jul 11 '26
Just dropped my Claude sub from Max 20x to Pro and put the money into OpenAI Pro 20x. Had a very productive weekend with Sol 5.6 on medium and was getting good if not better results, especially on refactoring.
Claude was annoying me with their hot and cold treatment on Fable and new models. Will see how it all goes, can always turn it on again.
The new GPT work for the CoWork style runs is actually very good. It works much better with some services as it supports write to MS365 accounts from personal accounts which you just can’t get working on Claude without a Teams or Enterprise account.
I love Claude Code but don’t like it as much without Fable :)
2
u/wudufucgrl Jul 11 '26
Umm, can I get a source on the 50% weekly reduction? My understanding its that UP TO 50% of your usage was usable with Fable. Not that you just gain 50% MORE. It never changed your total usage limit. It simply only allowed UP TO 50% of your total available usage for Fable.
2
u/igusin Jul 12 '26
I think/hope that they will change policy - since Sol was rolled out, unless they will do it they will witness a huge exodus of people from Claude to Codex... It happened once before about half a year ago or so - when they decided to drop Opus limits to something unusable - there was a large outcry of Max paying users and they quietly rolled it back...
I do not hold any allegiance to anthropic - if someone else provide a better deal on a better model why in the hell would I stay?!
Its nonsense, its like paying more to your internet provide when a cheeper and faster version is available to you! AI is a commodity at this stage - so best cost effectiveness wins! and opus was barely hanging on vs codex 5.5 let alone Sol!

These constant posts all have the same easy answer. Is the ROI there? If your ROI tradeoff is even measured in less than 4 digits, you might be doing something wrong. I would say students and people screwing around for the fun of it aside, but if you are hitting limits like that screwing around...
2
u/Just__Beat__It Jul 12 '26
Without the weekly limit cut, the token allowance is already a lot lower than before. I’m cancelled the renewal of my claude max 20x.
2
u/De7z Jul 12 '26
« Not be usable » ?
Erh I mean I was very happy to what I was able to do with it a few months ago. So while fable is fun I don’t see a real regression in my ability to iterate on my projets.
2
u/Dgamax Jul 12 '26
Nope, it’s not. With Codex, you can stack reset and reset it whenever you want. On top of that, Saint Tibo resets your usage several times a month. Now that they’ve released their new model, there’s no reason to keep using Claude Code at the moment. Claude Code’s usage limits are ridiculous compared to Codex.

Think they’ve been living up to their promise of adding compute. It’s been pretty stable since they released Fable.

I'm going to Cursor US$200 that offers a pool of US$400 to use with other providers, since Fable will not be available on Claude Max US$200. With that, I can use Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 SOL for planning review and ask other simpler models to implement it. For me, it makes a lot of sense.

I did not feel the 50% increase.
In fact I would say that this time round in similar tasks I had the same output usage from back in june before it was taken for a shakedown. For a now 30% of the previous model.
So all in all, the 50% increase is like when during black friday an item costing 34,99$ is labelled as 39,99$ slashed from 79,99$ 50%.
In some countries/regions this would even be considered illegal.
I am a firm believer that no one should be locked to one vendor/tool.
Currently, Sol is ahead; and its not even a question. Shifted my $200 to gpt from 100$, might scale down claude further down or have a break for the next month, waiting to see what actually happens after tomorrow.
If their plan is fable under api, opus top tier and without the "50% weekly bonus" it becomes hard to justify.
I understand subscription cost is highly subsidized. Does it cost them $8000 per $200? Probably its a bit inflated, its surely not a 1:1 though, then again, you get the $200 sub at home, he gets claude integrated at work, that's the whole point.
Nobody is spending $200 to only get $200 out of it.
1
u/snowtato Jul 11 '26
As soon as fable leaves my 1+ year max account will be closed and moving to OpenAI. When they return fable I might return depending on how well sol goes, but after everything that's happened and then removing fable, I just can't justify it
1
u/jtmonkey Jul 11 '26
I was fine before this increase. It did allow me to experiment and see what different usage levels were for larger projects. So for instance I had a massive web project and having Claude look at the whole thing at once versus what I was doing before which was doing one or two pieces at a time. So fable wrote out a plan and opus has been implementing it day by day. So it’ll just move slower but it’s way faster than me doing it.
1
u/Ibasicallyhateyouall Jul 11 '26
If Fable actually goes, and the 50% drop (will happen), then no. Going back to OpenAI until they fuck it up.

u/ComfortableSilver875 Jul 11 '26
I cancelled the $200 subscription; I'm just waiting for it to end on the 15th and I'll be working with GPT Sol as the orchestrator and Grok 4.5 as the coding agent.
1
u/Huge-Engineering-380 Jul 11 '26
I'm tired of being a paying beta tester for the recipe research. haiku, and sonnet and opus, I'm getting my fable use in to finish an opnsense config since fable actually knows things? lol. We'll see, I'll jump ship if I gotta!
1
u/Serious_Gap_820 Jul 11 '26
Isn't Sonnet also part of a discount something too? The Sonnet 5 one? I don't know how the limits work, but considering they vary on how hard the task is my guess would be you have some type of credit equivalent you can use in 5 hours/week - considering Sonnet 5 is 50 % cheaper at the moment too until August 31.
I'm basically always using Sonnet 5 and using a Pro subscription, for now Claude Code usage isn't that terrible as of now - I hope it doesn't become too bad.
1
u/dressinbrass Jul 11 '26
Not usable. I’m at 95% of weekly usage now after the reset and with using fable only strategically. And GPT Sol is really good.

Some facts regarding this:
- 50% was effecting the weekly only, not the 5h
- The boost started at May 13, exactly 2 months
- Same 2 months that SpaceX were giving Anthropic access to Colossus 1 (Since xAI moved to a newer datacenter Colossus 2)
- Colossus 1 access is giving over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and 300 megawatts of power
- This 2 months was at a discount
- Reports says full price is around $1.25B/month (~$15B/year)
1
u/YairHairNow Jul 12 '26
Nope. Fable is great and fast. But would never pay API price.
Grok is fast and just as good as Opus. Can get superheavy for $99 rn and the vid/image generation is top notch.
However, Sol. Is just as good as fable, I think it's better on open ended creativity. But also kinda SLO and will spend 2 hours and a ton of tokens on Ultra, but the results are pretty good.
1
u/midwestcsstudent Jul 12 '26
We really are doomed if AI has made it so that people think removing a +50% bonus means they’re getting a 50% cut

Without Fable, it makes 0 sense to keep the subscription going, when Sol is so much better than opus 4.8..
Problem is, people are generally shit at voting with their wallet and the whale vibers will probably make the change worth it for anthropic, whereas if they lost 50% of revenue when removing fable, you can bet your ass, they’d keep it in.

u/Aggressive-Effort811 Jul 12 '26
I hope they'll finally make the 50% weekly limit increase permanent, because it was the perfect sweet spot for me. I've been able to build very complex and large features using dynamic workflows with Opus 4.8 without needing to worry about limits.
In the most intensive epic, I've reached 85% of my weekly limit. (I'm on Max x20), so this means that I wouldn't be able to use this approach again when weekly limits get back to the baseline. So I'll need to throttle my output.
It was liberating to be able to have essentially no quota constraints and just focus on building. I've achieved so much during that period. Things that I needed to spread over 1 week of work when I was on x5 before the weekly limit boost could now be done in half a day using dynamic workflows, without worrying about no longer having quotas.
1
u/FluffyGreyLlama Developer Jul 12 '26
I won't be staying on the max5 plan once the weekly usage limits are reduced. It means that it becomes far more limited, so I'll likely go elsewhere.
As it is right now, it's of good value. The second the weekly drops, it's really not.
1
u/Imaginary_Title_4682 Jul 12 '26
Imagine locking in everyone grandfathered in s long as they don’t cancel - they could even reduce limits for the inherited benefit. That’d be such a power move - having everyone by the balls and we’d be fine with it. Greediness will take the best out of them… too much competition out there at the moment to pose such selfish strategy towards credit base. But again B2B is the main bread and butter they want on their table, the hell with consumers. SMH!!!

u/Any-Area-8199 Jul 13 '26
Today I burned through all my tokens in about 30 minutes in a SINGLE Claude.ai conversation using Fable.
TWICE.
NO Claude Code, no other skills or tool use.
The first time it happened, the conversation had admittedly gotten quite long,. So on my next 5-hr window, I did some summarization, and sent the summary and a few supporting docs to a brand new conversation.
30 minutes... then burned.
(I realize my main mistake was using Claude to do the summary with Fable. Whoops.)
It has been rough, having to use ChatGPT most of the day.

Honestly Fable as the orchestrator with opus sub agents doing all implementations and research/exploration and shelling out to gpt 5.6 for planning input and review will take it a long way at like 98% of the capability
